"Louis van Gaal must have told Falcao to up his game or he wouldn't keep him on come the end of the season, and wouldn't keep paying him a fortune."

"Falcao worked really hard, looked hungry and sharp and held up the ball well to bring others into play. On another day he could have had a hat-trick. Very impressive."

Son Lyme: So much for the mass-movement of protest at Villa Park. I'm proud of our support, and our club. Gil looks a player too. Up the Villa.

Atif Asif: How does Louis van Gaal not see that United work better with 4-4-2 diamond? Wilson and Falcao's partnership was very impressive, with pace and movement.

Donald Oluoch: Another clean sheet for Petr Cech. Goal difference might be vital come the end of the season. In a nutshell, Chelsea's form is back.

  6. Manager reactionpublished at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Newcastle caretaker manager John Carver on the penalty decision after Jose Fonte handled the ball in the penalty area: "It was an absolutely stonewall penalty. If he had his arms by his side you could argue it was ball to hand but his arms are an L-shape

"Big decisions can cost people livelihoods and jobs but more importantly points."

  7. Manager reactionpublished at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Newcastle caretaker manager John Carver on his future at the club: "It's exactly the same as it was before the game. There's been no talks and whether there will be in the next 48 hours I'll decide with the club.

"We haven't won a game and you need to win games. The crowd are waiting on a decision and the club has to make that soon.

"They have to do something. We don't deserve to drift away. The fans won't put up with that and something has to be done."

Neil Williams: Southampton continue to amaze this season. They've been brilliant so far. What I'd give for Aston Villa to be doing the same.

Alexandre Tynemouth: Sick of supporting a club going nowhere. Southampton are everything Newcastle could and should be.

Rian Hoskins: Eljero Elia has had some criticism over his attitude but with Ronald Koeman's faith in him, he could thrive at Southampton as shown today.

Here's one for you to put out there and impress your mates at the pub tonight - only one date in Premier League history has seen more away wins than today's six - New Year's Day in 1994, when eight away teams won.

  10. Manager reactionpublished at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

More from Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "When I got the question pre-season, if they said to me after 22 games you would be third maybe I would be laughing. But we don't steal points, we play good football. Of course you need some luck but the spirit is unbelievable, and the confidence, like you saw today, they are confident in themselves. They know exactly what they have to do, and even when we do not play well we keep the organisation and that is the key to being successful."

On Newcastle's claims for a penalty in injury time. "Maybe it was a penalty I don't see it exactly, but I think we deserved the win. There was fantastic spirit in the team, the key to winning is the confidence we are showing on the pitch."

On young midfielder Harrison Reed "He is doing fantastic, a few months ago he was running too much but he is now more calm and is being aggressive in midfield, winning the second ball. It is not always about playing football, sometimes you need a player in that position to keep the balance in the team and he did that fantastic."

  11. Manager reactionpublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman, speaking to BBC Sport: "It's fantastic. Maybe for everybody it was lovely to win at Old Trafford but maybe this win today is more important and I am still more proud of the players because it was the third game this week. They showed incredible ambition and spirit, even after a difficult start, and after 1-0 we were more comfortable on the pitch. The win was well deserved."

On loan signing Eljero Elia, who scored twice today. "I knew the player and I asked myself a lot of times what has happened, because he played in the World Cup final. First the system of the team is important, how he played today is the best. Also every player needs confidence of the coach. Maybe he was lacking the rhythm of the game but his answer today was fantastic."

  12. "Rock solid at the back"published at 19:45 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

    Former England defender Danny Mills
    Football Focus

"Southampton's defence is rock solid. Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand are great at attacking but are great defenders too. Jose Fonte and Florin Gardos, I love their decision making. There is a time to play and bring it down and a time to just get your foot through it. They do both so well and are well organised and very difficult to break down. Undoubtedly Ronald Koeman has played a big part in that."

Southampton forward Eljero Elia, speaking to Sky Sports: On running over to celebrate with manager Ronald Koeman after scoring the opening goal. "I wanted to thank Ronald Koeman to have given me the chance to play for Southampton. He was the only one who believed in me, and all the players here have helped me since the first moment I arrived."

  16. Player reactionpublished at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Southampton captain Jose Fonte, speaking to Sky Sports: On Newcastle's penalty claim in injury time: "It was so quick and so close I had no reaction. I have to see it but there was no intention of making handball of course.

"We arrived here so tired, we had three tough games away. We spent the week in hotels and travelling, so for us to come here and put in this massive effort it means the world. Thank you to the fans who have followed us.

"We don't think about where we are going to be at the end, we move on to the next game. There are 16 games to go, and we will take each one, one by one."

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson
BBC Radio Newcastle at St James' Park

"It could have gone either way. For me there wasn't a great deal in it but Newcastle did not create enough. They don't seem to have somebody who wants to be in there to put the ball in the back of the net, somebody who wants to score goals. We've been saying all season that when the transfer window opens the club needs to sign somebody, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen."
