QPR boss Harry Redknapp on speculation over his future: "It was one reporter saying it and all of a sudden it became gospel. "I've never been at a club quite like it in my life but someone has made a bit of money out of it.

"All the speculation that I was going to lose my job if we lost this game, I spoke to (owner) Tony Fernandes this week and he certainly never said anything like that to me.

"If we can get another striker in on loan then we'll stay up no problem."

"A change must be in the back of Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner's mind. Would a managerial change make a difference there?"

  5. Player reaction on Twitterpublished at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Injured Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge:, external "Three points again! Team's getting stronger each game, soon I'll be amongst it all."

  6. MANAGER REACTIONpublished at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: "I am happy for the players and for our supporters. We played much better than Sunderland, and in the second half, I thought we were better. Christian Eriksen is a very good player, and this is a very good victory. Hugo Lloris is one of the best keepers in the world, and he showed that late on.

"I thought the officials got confused about the late disallowed goal for Jan Vertonghen, because it was a goal.

"I don't want to speak about finishing in the top four. I want to speak about the next game. We need to keep going."

  7. Manager reactionpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Foxes boss Nigel Pearson is disappointed his team didn't create more in front of goal, but is full of praise for Stoke: "They have Premier League know-how, there is no doubt about that. They are a big, powerful side, and on the day we didn't find our own levels either.

"Once they got in front they made it very difficult for us to make any inroads into their defensive third and that is frustrating because you hope for a chance or two.

"I am disappointed because of how other results have gone. It is a missed opportunity for us.

"There wasn't a great deal in the game. We didn't find the level of performance on the day as we have done of late. But there is no point dwelling too much on it. We have to move on."

  8. Postpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

    Jermaine Jenas
    Former England midfielder

"I played under John Carver as a coach for years and he has served his time.

"He has the qualities to become a good manager at Newcastle. The players are really backing him which is a good thing. But there does need to a distance between a manager and the players and that might be difficult for him to make the step up."

  9. Manager reactionpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "I'm disappointed with the performance. It wasn't up to our standards. Even at 2-0 I didn't think we were operating in the right manner.

"It's a big learning curve for the players because you can't come away from your performance levels.

"There are many lessons. The simple one is if you're not on top of your game for every minute, you get hurt. There were some good signs but generally we didn't operate in the way we're used to."

Leaders Wycombe and second-placed Burton both fought back from a goal down to avoid high-profile upsets in League Two. Fred Onyedinma's second-half strike secured a 1-1 draw for Wanderers against Bury and extended their unbeaten run to nine games.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is still searching for his first win on the road as Burton manager and had to thank Darragh Lenihan's 82nd minute strike for securing a point at Portsmouth to keep them within touching distance of the leaders.

In-form Newport County suffered a shock 4-0 loss at Cambridge and Shrewsbury Town, who were top of the table at the turn of the year, capitalised on their slip to steal into third place with a 3-0 home win over a Hartlepool side with the worst away record in the league.

  11. Manager reactionpublished at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Stoke boss Mark Hughes felt victory was deserved and praised matchwinner Bojan: "We were always a threat going forward, scored with a great goal, and didn't allow them to get any momentum against us going forward.

"I wouldn't say we created chance after chance but there were passages of play in and around the box where we did well and the goal was a great goal.

"When Bojan gets the ball in those areas of the pitch, you always sense something will happen."

  12. Postpublished at 17:21 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Former Tottenham and Stoke striker Garth Crooks
    Final Score

"At 4-0 up Chelsea started to take the foot off the gas, but in bringing Shurrle on they got another spark and scored a fifth. And goal difference could make a difference come the championship crunch. Those five goals could be crucial."

  13. MANAGER REACTIONpublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet: "It's painful. I thought we were good enough to take something from the game. I think we need to learn. We lost the game today because of a couple of incidents, but I think we can take positives. We created a great chance in the first half for Steven Fletcher, Danny Graham has forced a great save at the end and I think we should have had a penalty for a foul on Jermain Defoe.

"I thought Jermain was unlucky to be caught offside. I'm sure he's going to give me plenty of positives. I don't expect to do any more business in January."

MOTD's Jonathan Pearce at St James' Park

"John Carver has been taking baby steps as caretaker manager at Newcastle, the club of his boyhood dreams. But he has no control over the future and the club will remain in a state of flux until the new boss is named.

"The Saints are on some journey of their own. Their points tally of 39 from 21 matches is a club record in the top flight.

"They showed gritty resilience in victory at Manchester United but that journey has taken them on a seven-day, 1400-mile trek via Old Trafford and Ipswich to Tyneside. That must have drained the players. Can they fully control the next step of their journey?"

Chris Wright: Sensational comeback by Palace! Burnley getting a taste of their own medicine. The Pardew effect is gathering momentum.

Tomst: The linesman at White Hart Lane owes Tottenham a goal. He's given Vertonghen offside in his own half!

Joe Jones: That was the worst offside decision I've ever seen. Vertonghen was five yards inside the Spurs half!

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho offers some words of comfort to counterpart Garry Monk after the leaders' 5-0 win at Swansea: "There are matches that go away from our control and as managers we can't do much. I can understand that he was frustrated but the only thing I can say is that it's better to lose one match 5-0 than to lose five games 5-0. I'm sure he will get a reaction from his team."

With six defeats from their last eight games, fair play to Newcastle for trying to do something to rectify their poor form [see 17:09 entry] but whether it will have the desired effect remains to be seen.

When Newcastle ventured off to Tenerife a couple of years ago they crashed out of the FA Cup upon their return but went on to win nine of their last 16 league games to secure a top-five finish.

However, it didn't quite work out as well after their last mid-season break. They went out to Dubai last year and went on to lose 11 of their final 15 games of the season.

Second-placed Bristol City won 2-0 at Scunthorpe United, with the hosts having to play the majority of the game with defender Andrew Boyce between the posts. First choice goalkeeper Sam Slocombe was injured after 10 minutes and his replacement James Severn went off 32 minutes later. A penalty from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and late strike from Luke Freeman secured the points.

Swindon remain top of the table on goal difference after their fourth win on the bounce. Jack Stephens, John Swift and Andrew Williams got the goals in a 3-1 victory over Chesterfield.

At the foot of the table, bottom-placed Yeovil moved to within three points of safety as Gozie Ugwu scored to make it 1-0 against Bradford City and secure only their sixth triumph of the season.
