Pet hate in football number 234535. Players getting excited and having a shot at goal from ridiculous range. Yoan Gouffran, buoyed by his shinned finish, skips past a challenge and scampers goalwards before leaning back and shooting high and wide from 35 yards out. Come on son.

Ejikeme IkeChi: That's a huge goal - Newcastle are in this. But I still think Southampton will nick this.

Aashish: Neither goalkeeper inspiring much confidence in their respective back fours. Forster's nervy and edgy, and Krul's hesitant and slow.

Oli Starr: Ward-Prowse is developing into a good player that brings creativity and, vitally, awareness. Has the attributes to succeed.

Southampton will struggle to concede a stranger goal all season but they have responded well to that set back as Dusan Tadic sends an inviting cross into the area, Tim Krul is quick to react however and claws the ball out of the air ahead of lurking Southampton players.

    BBC Radio 5 live

The Danny Mills v Stuart Pearce tit-for-tat row has been rumbling on all day.

Mills, who was part of the Manchester City squad under Pearce, started it by criticising the Forest manager on 5 live Sport on Friday night. Then Pearce's side won the East Midlands derby this lunchtime and Pearce responded to Mills after the game. Mills then reaffirmed his stance on Final Score.

Here's what Pearce has had to say: "I know Danny Mills very well. I worked with him at Manchester City, I put Micah Richards in the team in front of him, Nedum Onuoha too. Danny gets paid to make observations on football, and I'll accept anything he's got to say.

"My respect goes to people like Steve McClaren, Tony Pulis, Harry Redknapp, people who have spent hundreds and thousands of games in the technical area. That's where my real respect lies in football."

The next round of this should be when Mills appears on football phone-in 606, just starting now.

"It is just a total lack of communication between goalkeeper and centre-back. It was the goalkeeper's ball all day. He should be coming in and clearing everybody out, but instead the defender doesn't get a shout and clears it into Yoann Gouffran, who knows absolutely nothing about it."

Yoan Gouffran wins freak goal of the day award for this equaliser. Remy Cabella threads a delightful ball through but Florin Gardos looks to be all over it, sliding in to sweep away but his clearance whacks the shin of Gouffran and in it goes.

"Jose Fonte really has to do better with that. It was a free header, he was under no pressure at all. There was just no challenge from the Newcastle defence."

Jose Fonte pops down the other end of the pitch and powers a header just over from James Ward-Prowse's cross. If Saints get a second, I fear that will be game over for Newcastle, who are lacking a cutting edge.

  9. MANAGER REACTIONpublished at 17:53 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert: "The second half I thought we were excellent. I didn't think there was too much in it in the first half.

"We lost a poor goal but the second half was relentless pressure from us and their goalkeeper has probably kept them in it with the save from Christian Benteke.

"I don't think anyone could fault us for the way we played in the second half. We just have to keep doing what we did today and keep getting the chances and they will go in. The fans were brilliant right from the off. At the end that is just disappointment."

Chris Wright: Ronald Koeman has that magic touch! He signs a fellow Dutchman who scores his first goal!

Graeme Dawson: That is atrocious goalkeeping from Tim Krul.

Evan Pritchard: That's IT! The manager's GOT TO GO! PARDEW OUT! ... Eh? What's that? He's already left? Who do we blame now?

Daryl Janmaat launches a cross into the Southampton box but there is no chance Ayoze Perez is going to get to it ahead of Jose Fonte, who heads clear. The Saints backline is well organised and disciplined and it is going to be tough for Newcastle to break them down.

  12. Postpublished at 17:48 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

That's a tad harsh on Newcastle, who looked to be just building up to something promising but Southampton are not in the top four by luck and they show it with a clinical attack. It has given them confidence and they are in possession at the moment...

"What a touch from Graziano Pelle in the build-up - a great little chest-off. Tim Krul could have done better for me. It was very close to his body but he was a bit slow getting down to it."

Goal! And it is against the run of play as Southampton catch out a sleepy Newcastle defence, on-loan Werder Bremen winger Elijero Elia racing on to a ball and firing beyond Dutch compatriot Tim Krul.

  15. MANAGER REACTIONpublished at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

    Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers:

"It was always going to be a difficult game. Aston Villa are a hard team to try to break down but we were very complete in our performance.

"We passed the ball around really well at times and our counter-attack was very good, and we probably should have exploited that more than we did.

"Importantly, when we had to defend at important moments of the game we stood up to the challenge and it is another clean sheet."

Ayoze Perez claims the first shot on target, shooting low but it is a weak effort and easy pickings for Fraser Forster, who is presented with a tougher test soon after when Yoan Gouffran rattles off a dipping strike from outside the area at goal, warming the gloves of the Southampton keeper.

The game is short on quality but Newcastle have started better than Southampton and push forward again, this time Yoan Gouffran tries to bend a cross from the right into the area, but a deflection sends the ball into the hands of Fraser Forster.

John Carver is up out of his seat in the Newcastle dugout, barking out instructions to his players, who promptly embark on the first attack of the game, Remy Cabella trying to find a team-mate in the box but Southampton are back in numbers and eventually clear.

It has been a very uneventful first couple of minutes as both teams test each other out, searching for potential weaknesses. This is how the two sides line up by the way.

    Former Newcastle defender John Anderson
BBC Radio Newcastle at St James' Park

"Newcastle really need a win. They have fits and starts - they seem to go on a bit of a run and then have a bit of a lull. The fixtures coming up are not easy and they need three points today.

"Southampton have had an exceptional season, but I don't think there will be a better opportunity for Newcastle to turn them over than tonight. Also, a win puts John Carver in pole position for the manager job. Maybe not on a permanent basis, but at least until the end of the season."
