"We have a delay to kick-off and at the minute I am told the police are not giving Sheffield United an escort and therefore we cannot tell you exactly when the kick-off will be. The officials have to give the players 45 minutes to warm up before the game starts. It could be that we are looking at 20:00 GMT kick-off, and conceivably we could be looking at an 20:15 kick-off."

Tottenham have now confirmed that kick-off has been delayed and the game will get under way at 20:00 GMT.

So as mentioned, Emmanuel Adebayor returns to the side and is named as Tottenham's captain, while Michel Vorm comes in for Hugo Lloris, who is not in his side's 18-man squad. There are also starts for Ben Davies, Andros Townsend and Ryan Mason, but there is no place in the 18 for Kyle Naughton as he looks set to move to Swansea in a £5m transfer.

Tottenham XI: Vorm, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Davies; Townsend, Mason, Stambouli, Eriksen; Adebayor (c), Kane.

Wondering why there is no Sheffield United team news yet? Well the next entry might explain things...

  6. Naughton heading to Swanseapublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2015

Walker is not the only Blades fan in the Tottenham squad, with Kyle Naughton having also come through the youth ranks at the South Yorkshire side.

However, the full-back is unlikely to be cheering either side on tonight, as he closes in on a £5m move to Swansea, who are hopeful of completing the deal for the England Under-21 international within the next 24 hours.

For Tottenham's Kyle Walker, there is more at stake tonight than simply ensuring Tottenham are not on the end of a shock defeat.

The defender is from a family of huge Sheffield United supporters and is a Blades fan himself. He also came through the club's youth system before joining Tottenham in 2009.

Walker's three-year-old lad Roman will be watching from the stands tonight, but will it be in the home or the away end?

"I'm a Blade so he's a Blade," says Walker., external "He's got both a Tottenham and a Sheffield United kit but he might not be allowed to wear his Sheffield United one at White Hart Lane because he'll be in the home end so he might have to settle for wearing the Tottenham one."

    Half-and-half scarf as a compromise?

On the back of Sheffield United's impressive record against Premier League sides, what is the most memorable giant-killing your side has achieved?

Andrew, Richhill: Manchester United 0-3 York City in the 1995-96 League Cup at Old Trafford. The same Manchester United that went on to win the double that season, and that had Dennis Irwin, Phil Neville, Lee Sharpe, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs in the starting line-up.

Thoughts on the team, Tottenham fans?

Interesting to see Emmanuel Adebayor start. The 30-year-old was booed by a section of the Spurs fans when he made an appearance as a second-half substitute in Tottenham's 2-1 win against Sunderland on Saturday. That was his first appearance for nine weeks because of injury, illness and a period of compassionate leave.

"I don't want to understand it, but for me, I am not here to win any fans back. I just want to do my job as a professional," Adebayor said about the jeers. "With my age, to be honest with you, I don't want to look because, no matter what you do, there will always be some that hate you."

  10. BREAKING TEAM NEWSpublished at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2015

Emmanuel Adebayor starts his first game for Tottenham since 2 November and captains the side. Michel Vorm is in goal.

Tottenham XI: Vorm, Walker, Dier, Vertonghen, Davies; Townsend, Mason, Stambouli, Eriksen; Adebayor (c), Kane.

Whatever the score at White Hart Lane, the outcome of the tie will not be decided tonight. The League Cup semi-final is, of course, a two-legged affair with the second-leg taking place at Bramall Lane in exactly one week.

Blades to be out of sight by then...?

Sheffield United fans have a few to pick from, but what is the most memorable giant-killing your side has achieved?

I'll kick things off with mine: League Cup, October 1999 - Chelsea 0-1 Huddersfield. Kenny Irons with an absolute screamer. Great scenes.

  16. Easier said than donepublished at 18:35 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2015

Let's be honest, the cup romantics will be rooting for a Sheffield United win tonight, but that's easier said than done against a strong Tottenham side.

Spurs have won seven of their last 10 games in all competitions, losing just once.

And as good as Sheffield United's record against higher division opposition is, Tottenham's against lower division sides is even better. They have won 11 of their last 12 League Cup games against teams from leagues below them.

  17. Postpublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2015

Love a good old fashioned tale of David downing Goliath? Then you have come to the right place because if there is a team that has proven pedigree of pulling off an upset, it is Sheffield United.

Already this season they have seen off West Ham, Southampton and QPR in cup competitions, while Aston Villa and Fulham fell victim to them in last season's FA Cup. In total they have only lost twice in 19 cup games under Nigel Clough.

No doubt about it, they'll fancy themselves at White Hart Lane tonight.

  18. Blades to cut down another giant?published at 17:54 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2015

For Tottenham fans of a certain age, thinking back to 2 March 1993 might make them wince...

    Sheffield UnitedImage source, Getty Images

...it was on that day Spurs suffered one of their heaviest defeats - a 6-0 hammering by Sheffield United, Brian Deane among the scorers that day, Teddy Sheringham failing to impress for Spurs.

Two divisions and 45 places separate the two sides today as they meet in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup. It is a gap that suggests a Tottenham defeat, let alone one as heavy as they suffered in the Premier League 22 years ago, is unlikely.

But then, the League One Blades certainly know a thing or two about giant killing....
