Kai: Though I am upset about the loss and the amount of goals we conceded, I am more worried about the blow to the team's confidence, starting 2015, the second half of the season conceding 5 goals does not bode well. But up the Chels!

Steve Huish, Surbiton: Mourinho such a bad loser and always blaming officials. At least none of his players went swimming today.

Tottenham winger Nacer Chadli, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "It was nice to score a lot of goals tonight against the Premier League leaders. We hadn't won against any of the top four before today, but we deserved to win this game.

"It's one of our best performances this season. We showed a great attitude and that's what everyone wants to see. We've shown signs of improvement and we have to keep that going.

"The players know each other better and that's showing in our performances. Now we have to keep our balance. It's one of the sweetest evenings of my career."

Tony, Spurs fan in Coventry: So pleased for the fans, had SO much stick from Chelsea fans in recent years. Really thought we would lose today, amazing result and up to 5th with Arsenal losing earlier!

Kevin in Hornchurch: Mourinho lets himself down again. Why not admit ,as everyone who saw that game, that it was a great spectacle and on the day Spurs played out of their skins and deserved to win. Spurs scored 5! That's not luck that's just amazing.

Carl, Wiltshire: Is anyone still questioning Harry Kane's ability to make it at the top?

"I've seen Everton a lot this season and they're not hurting opponents enough. They did mix it up last season when they needed to. They're playing sides who are comfortable sitting deep against them. They're struggling defensively too.

"It's strange, because they have a squad who should be able to compete at home and in Europe."

Otis W:, external Mourinho has no excuse, we were badly beaten by what appears to be a good Spurs team. As a Chelsea fan, I'm worried.

JavelBleach:, external Honestly thought Mourinho was man enough to for once give credit to the better team. Struggling to find someone to blame. Poor.

Ameer Chughtai:, external Cahill and Terry's main weakness is pace, both are sluggish on the turn, runs from Chadli opened space for some Kane wizardry.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a great performance by the team. I think they are all very happy with the first day of the new year, to start this way was very important.

"The most important thing today was our performance, to believe in our way. The team showed a big mentality. Chelsea are the best team so far, it was a difficult game. It was an important three points for the players and supporters for the belief, to show all is possible."

Is Harry Kane showing he can be a regular 20-goal-a-season striker for Tottenham? "Yes, why not? He shows to work hard everyday. We need to recognise the team because the team performance was great and we need to keep this feeling for the next step."

Tom Miszkowski:, external No point moaning about officials & contentious penalty decisions Jose, I'd have Cesc in tomorrow, teach him how to beat 1st man.

Jared Maobe:, external Mourinho even lies to us that Costa was good? Jose, wake up man, he could not keep the ball or give a pass.

Peter Malath:, external I calculated all the points Utd threw away and just looking at where we could be on the table right now. I just kicked myself.

Here's more from Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think at 2-0 [to Chelsea, if they had been awarded and scored a penalty] it would have killed the game. We had the biggest opportunity in the game to score the second goal which is a shot from the penalty spot.

"At 2-0 I don't think they have a chance to change the game against a side like Chelsea. We trust a lot in our game. Maybe it is not enough. We had some individual problems against a fast and powerful Chadli and the movement of Kane.

"Fatigue plays a part for everybody. That is the Premier League, it is not easy for any club, we are no exception."

"To pick up seven points over Christmas shows a really good turnaround for Tottenham. They pushed back Chelsea, who were made to look inept at times by a really good Spurs performance."

If you are debating an early night, here's a stat to keep you interested in the highlights: The day ended with 33 Premier League goals, the most ever seen on New Year's Day in the PL era and the most since 34 were scored on NYD 1987.

  14. Player reactionpublished at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2015

Tottenham striker Harry Kane, speaking to BBC Sport: "I hope 2015 is even better for myself, I always want to progress and do better and hopefully I can do that this year. We have taken to the way the manager wants us to play and it is working.

"It was a London derby for the fans, it means we go into the new year buzzing and it is good for us as players as well, it shows we can perform against them."

Chris, Spurs till I die: Sometimes life gives you moments like this, will enjoy Match of the Day but it counts for nothing if we don't kick on from here.

Adam: People saying Chelsea have played a lot of games recently... As has every other team over festive period. No excuse!

Jack: Devastated by that result. I don't think I've ever felt lower by a loss as it's Spurs. As a Chelsea fan it hurts more than when Arsenal did it to us a few seasons ago.

"It's taken Tottenham a long time to find the right system. But they were still getting results this season even when they weren't playing well. Tottenham still don't look as organised as they should do, particularly in defence. But the energy they have is showing through, and they're starting to look a very good side."

  17. Manager reactionpublished at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2015

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on BT Sport: "I don't want to be punished. I want to be around for the next match so I prefer to say that we just lost. Tomorrow is another day.

"Every game is unpredictable but there are things in the game that are becoming predictable.

"Of course I hate to lose but I prefer to lose like I did against Newcastle with a clean performance from referee Martin Atkinson and an unlucky performance by us. But in a game when you lose because of football is a different feeling.

"You pay well to your pundits so hopefully they will say it is true."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BT Sport: "I think we made some defensive mistakes, some individual defensive mistakes. It was not easy for my defenders to cope with Nacer Chadli and Harry Kane. It was also very difficult for Tottenham defenders to deal with an amazing Eden Hazard and good Diego Costa.

"You can speak about crucial moments of the game but I prefer to focus on the result. The players tried a lot but the fifth goal killed a bit our fantastic reaction.

"We had important Christmas gifts in the last two matches, Christmas gifts that people who love football do not like."

"I never saw that result coming for Chelsea, certainly from a defensive point of view. That's a major negative, given how well organised they normally are."
