  1. Goodnight

What a start to 2015 that was. The perfect appetiser for Saturday's big weekend of FA Cup action on the BBC. I, for one, can't wait. We're closing the live text machine down for the night now, but let me leave you with a reminder about tonight's Match of the Day. BBC One 22:35 GMT. Enjoy.

    MOTD
  2. Text us on 81111

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Kai: Though I am upset about the loss and the amount of goals we conceded, I am more worried about the blow to the team's confidence, starting 2015, the second half of the season conceding 5 goals does not bode well. But up the Chels!

Steve Huish, Surbiton: Mourinho such a bad loser and always blaming officials. At least none of his players went swimming today.

  3. Player reaction

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

    Nacer Chadli

Tottenham winger Nacer Chadli, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "It was nice to score a lot of goals tonight against the Premier League leaders. We hadn't won against any of the top four before today, but we deserved to win this game.

"It's one of our best performances this season. We showed a great attitude and that's what everyone wants to see. We've shown signs of improvement and we have to keep that going.

"The players know each other better and that's showing in our performances. Now we have to keep our balance. It's one of the sweetest evenings of my career."

  4. Text us on 81111

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Tony, Spurs fan in Coventry: So pleased for the fans, had SO much stick from Chelsea fans in recent years. Really thought we would lose today, amazing result and up to 5th with Arsenal losing earlier!

Kevin in Hornchurch: Mourinho lets himself down again. Why not admit ,as everyone who saw that game, that it was a great spectacle and on the day Spurs played out of their skins and deserved to win. Spurs scored 5! That's not luck that's just amazing.

Carl, Wiltshire: Is anyone still questioning Harry Kane's ability to make it at the top?

  5. Everton on the slide?

    Former Everton midfielder Kevin Kilbane

606 on BBC Radio 5 live

"I've seen Everton a lot this season and they're not hurting opponents enough. They did mix it up last season when they needed to. They're playing sides who are comfortable sitting deep against them. They're struggling defensively too.

"It's strange, because they have a squad who should be able to compete at home and in Europe."

  6. Post update

In the next round of Premier League fixtures on 10 January, Chelsea host Newcastle and Tottenham are at Crystal Palace. Manchester City face a trip to struggling Everton.

  7. Post update

The Premier League takes a break now, with Chelsea hosting Championship side Watford in the FA Cup third round on Sunday. The following day, Spurs make the trip up north to face Burnley.

Otis W: Mourinho has no excuse, we were badly beaten by what appears to be a good Spurs team. As a Chelsea fan, I'm worried.

JavelBleach: Honestly thought Mourinho was man enough to for once give credit to the better team. Struggling to find someone to blame. Poor.

Ameer Chughtai: Cahill and Terry's main weakness is pace, both are sluggish on the turn, runs from Chadli opened space for some Kane wizardry.

  9. Manager reaction

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

    Mauricio Pochettino

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a great performance by the team. I think they are all very happy with the first day of the new year, to start this way was very important.

"The most important thing today was our performance, to believe in our way. The team showed a big mentality. Chelsea are the best team so far, it was a difficult game. It was an important three points for the players and supporters for the belief, to show all is possible."

Is Harry Kane showing he can be a regular 20-goal-a-season striker for Tottenham? "Yes, why not? He shows to work hard everyday. We need to recognise the team because the team performance was great and we need to keep this feeling for the next step."

Tom Miszkowski: No point moaning about officials & contentious penalty decisions Jose, I'd have Cesc in tomorrow, teach him how to beat 1st man.

Jared Maobe: Mourinho even lies to us that Costa was good? Jose, wake up man, he could not keep the ball or give a pass.

Peter Malath: I calculated all the points Utd threw away and just looking at where we could be on the table right now. I just kicked myself.

  11. Manager reaction

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

    Jose Mourinho

Here's more from Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think at 2-0 [to Chelsea, if they had been awarded and scored a penalty] it would have killed the game. We had the biggest opportunity in the game to score the second goal which is a shot from the penalty spot.

"At 2-0 I don't think they have a chance to change the game against a side like Chelsea. We trust a lot in our game. Maybe it is not enough. We had some individual problems against a fast and powerful Chadli and the movement of Kane.

"Fatigue plays a part for everybody. That is the Premier League, it is not easy for any club, we are no exception."

  12. Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane

606 on BBC Radio 5 live

"To pick up seven points over Christmas shows a really good turnaround for Tottenham. They pushed back Chelsea, who were made to look inept at times by a really good Spurs performance."

  13. Goals, goals, goals

Surely you don't need any more reasons to watch Match of the Day tonight? If you are debating an early night, here's a stat to keep you interested in the highlights: The day ended with 33 Premier League goals, the most ever seen on New Year's Day in the PL era and the most since 34 were scored on NYD 1987.

    BBC One. 22:35 GMT.

  14. Player reaction

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Tottenham striker Harry Kane, speaking to BBC Sport: "I hope 2015 is even better for myself, I always want to progress and do better and hopefully I can do that this year. We have taken to the way the manager wants us to play and it is working.

"It was a London derby for the fans, it means we go into the new year buzzing and it is good for us as players as well, it shows we can perform against them."

  15. Text us on 81111

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Chris, Spurs till I die: Sometimes life gives you moments like this, will enjoy Match of the Day but it counts for nothing if we don't kick on from here.

Adam: People saying Chelsea have played a lot of games recently... As has every other team over festive period. No excuse!

Jack: Devastated by that result. I don't think I've ever felt lower by a loss as it's Spurs. As a Chelsea fan it hurts more than when Arsenal did it to us a few seasons ago.

  16. Post update

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane

606 on BBC Radio 5 live

    Harry Kane

"It's taken Tottenham a long time to find the right system. But they were still getting results this season even when they weren't playing well. Tottenham still don't look as organised as they should do, particularly in defence. But the energy they have is showing through, and they're starting to look a very good side."

  17. Manager reaction

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on BT Sport: "I don't want to be punished. I want to be around for the next match so I prefer to say that we just lost. Tomorrow is another day.

"Every game is unpredictable but there are things in the game that are becoming predictable.

"Of course I hate to lose but I prefer to lose like I did against Newcastle with a clean performance from referee Martin Atkinson and an unlucky performance by us. But in a game when you lose because of football is a different feeling.

"You pay well to your pundits so hopefully they will say it is true."

  18. Manager reaction

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

    Jose Mourinho

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to BT Sport: "I think we made some defensive mistakes, some individual defensive mistakes. It was not easy for my defenders to cope with Nacer Chadli and Harry Kane. It was also very difficult for Tottenham defenders to deal with an amazing Eden Hazard and good Diego Costa.

"You can speak about crucial moments of the game but I prefer to focus on the result. The players tried a lot but the fifth goal killed a bit our fantastic reaction.

"We had important Christmas gifts in the last two matches, Christmas gifts that people who love football do not like."

  19. Post update

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane

606 on BBC Radio 5 live

"I never saw that result coming for Chelsea, certainly from a defensive point of view. That's a major negative, given how well organised they normally are."

  20. Post update

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

    David Unsworth

Not that John Terry will care tonight, but he is now one behind David Unsworth as the all time top-scoring Premier League defender. Terry has 37 goals.

Rory Bradford: Amazing game! Spurs to make top four and win Capital One Cup! Spurs have a better team than Arsenal now!

Helles Mammut: How long before there's a rumour that Real Madrid are interested in Harry Kane?

Steven Jerjian: How tasty is that Chelsea-City game at the end of January looking now?

  22. Harry Kane - from Norwich nightmare to Spurs star

Here's an interesting thought on Harry Kane from Norwich winger Elliott Bennett, currently on loan at Brighton:

"Harry Kane is great example of patience and self belief. Came to Norwich and didn't play, got his head down at Spurs is and now getting rewards."

Kane spent the first half of the 2012-13 season on loan at Carrow Road, but played just six times before he was recalled.

  23. Player reaction

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Tottenham defender Danny Rose: "We went 4-1 up and the second goal we conceded was very sloppy from ourselves. We are getting there slowly. We are understanding the manager's ways and hopefully we can push on now. We have had a good Christmas period. The top four is the target is every season and we just take each game as it comes."

  24. Player reaction

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

    Tottenham

Tottenham striker Harry Kane: "It shows how good we are. To score five against one of the best defences in the world shows how we're coming together as a team. It was a great win. We are probably unhappy we conceded the two extra goals but we are delighted with the win.

"I am just enjoying playing. Hopefully I can keep it up but the most important thing is the team winning."

  25. Match of the Day running order

No surprises here then. BBC One 22:35 GMT. Enjoy.

    MOTD
  26. Post update

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Perhaps the most eye-catching thing about this game - other than the result - is how much Harry Kane dominated Gary Cahill. It's been a long time since England's now senior centre-back spent 90 minutes chasing shadows. He just couldn't get near the 21-year-old.

  27. Post update

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"Tottenham showed everybody tonight how to play against Chelsea. I think Chelsea can justifiably say they've played a lot of games in recent weeks, and it caught up with them. This was a free hit for Tottenham tonight.

"The game turned when Harry Kane equalised. Spurs thought: 'If we can keep going at this Chelsea defence, it could be our night.' I never thought I'd see this result in a million years. But Chelsea will get this out of their system against Watford in the FA Cup on Sunday. I fear for Watford, actually."

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Chris Baldwin: Best Spurs performance of the season? This is the best performance since Harry Redknapp left. They've bullied Chelsea today.

Tim Arstall: No doubt Kane has been outstanding today, but is he really world class? Remains to be seen for me...

Deano: I hope people aren't reading too much into this result for Spurs. Before today, they've been consistently lucky for a while.

  29. Post update

    Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

So, how does the league table look after that? Well, Manchester City and Chelsea are joint top. They cannot be separated by anything other than alphabetical order and, were the season to finish now, they would have to go to a play-off at a neutral venue. Imagine that. Tottenham are up to fifth, above Arsenal.

  40. Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

Sam Robson: No doubt in my mind, that Eden Hazard is the best player in the Premier League, even in defeat he has been mesmerising!

Tom Wilkinson: Chelsea have started the same back five in almost every game this season. Burnout? I hope so.

Miles Kynigos: Eden Hazard has been at times the best on the pitch(Harry Kane excluded) yet no one else for Chelsea has pulled their weight

  42. GOAL

Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea - John Terry

Eden Hazard's response to adversity has been sensational. He's really done everything to drag Chelsea back into this contest and he helps make it 5-3 when his low cross is helped on by Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry is on hand at the back stick to roll the ball into an empty net.

  43. Tottenham 5-2 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"In the past, there's almost been a psychological blip when Tottenham have taken on the big teams, and that's perhaps made a difference when it's come to getting into that top four and staying there. But they've played with an intensity and a physical effort tonight. Since they went in front, there's been a tenacious approach to make sure they don't let Chelsea back into this game. They can use this performance as a template now."

  49. Tottenham 5-2 Chelsea

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

    Nacer Chadli celebrates

"Nacer Chadli's done brilliantly. He's combined so well with Harry Kane down that left-hand side. It's another super finish. Yes, there's a slight deflection, but I don't think the ball deviates too much. It's no more than Nacer Chadli deserves. He's been excellent."

  50. Post update

    Tottenham 5-2 Chelsea

"We want six," chant the Tottenham fans who, moments before the goal, were up in arms as Gary Cahill rather naughtily kicked Harry Kane in the base of the back when the ball was nowhere near him. The big Spurs striker has had the last laugh though...

  51. GOAL

Tottenham 5-2 Chelsea - Nacer Chadli

    Nacer Chadli scores

It gets better for Spurs. They snuff out any thoughts of a Chelsea comeback when Harry Kane, yet again, plays in Nacer Chadli who buries a low shot beyond Thibaut Courtois.

  52. Join the debate at #bbcfootball

Marcus Goodwillie: Fazio scares me every time he has the ball, spends too much time on it.

Declan Cairns: Chelsea have turned from a team that can't score to one that can't defend. Look like a Ferrari up front and a Micra at the back.

James Wall: Fabregas is a waste of space. Stick a striker on instead.

  53. Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"Chelsea will keep going and keep chasing. If they think they can salvage a point, it could prove crucial for them in the title run-in."

  54. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

A Tottenham switch at full-back - Ben Davies is on for Danny Rose.

  55. GREAT SAVE!

    Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"Nacer Chadli may not want to play on the left side for Tottenham, he may not want to play wide, but he does a wonderful job out there. He gives them natural width, which they've lacked at home. He wants to play centrally, but he seems a natural wide player, which Christian Eriksen doesn't."

  60. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

Chelsea make another attacking change - sending on Mo Salah for Willian.

    Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

Miles Kynigos: Hazard is really sparkling out there, if the other Chelsea players can start to contribute too Chelsea have a chance.

Jon Herbert: Simply one of those days. Spurs and Kane inspired; Cahill found wanting; Fabregas rare poor game; Matic likewise; Ivanovic the same.

Daniel Taktak: I'm worried that this (potential) result will incentivise Mourinho to dip into his pocket and spend big this transfer window.

Paul Fawcett: Coming up to 6am in Australia and getting up for the game was the best decision ever as a Spurs fan. Haven't won it yet though.

  62. PENALTY APPEAL

    Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

Jose Mourinho is, once again, furious about a refereeing decision. After Christian Eriksen's shot inside the Chelsea penalty area is charged down by John Terry, the visitors sweep forward and a promising move ends with Eden Hazard going tumbling under Federico Fazio's challenge. No penalty, says referee Phil Dowd. Jose disagrees. The lack of any real protests from Hazard suggests the official got his decision right.

  63. Post update

    Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

Harry Kane's on fire here - this time controlling the ball like it's on a piece of string and knocking it across the box but there's nobody on hand to add a finishing touch in front of an open goal.

  64. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

Andros Townsend, who scored Tottenham's third from the penalty spot, is replaced by Paulinho.

  65. Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"What Spurs cannot continue to do is get caught up in the emotion of the game. They need to stay calm, put their foot on the ball, make good decisions and give themselves time to control the game. If Chelsea get the momentum, they'll believe they can score a third and a fourth goal here."

  66. Post update

    Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

    Mauricio Pochettino looks on

Chelsea are seeing plenty of the ball now. Nemanja Matic is trying to get forward more while Eden Hazard looks like a man on a mission. Tottenham need to settle things down.

Youcef Mehellou: Chelsea could do with Frank Lampard coming off the bench now.‏

  68. Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"We talk about Chelsea not playing well, but if you give them a sniff, this is what they can do. What Federico Fazio is doing, I've no idea, but Hazard has punished the error. I think it's probably still asking too much of Chelsea."

  69. GOAL

Tottenham 4-2 Chelsea - Eden Hazard

    Eden Hazard

Hang on. Let's not write off Chelsea just yet. It's an absolute howler from Federico Fazio who gives the ball away in midfield and Eden Hazard plays a neat one-two with Cesc Fabregas before lashing the ball home from just inside the area.

  70. Tottenham 4-1 Chelsea

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"That was the big question for Tottenham when they were 3-1 up at half-time: Do you sit back and soak up pressure, or do you keep going? That's exactly what Tottenham have done. They've got their reward because they've kept going after Chelsea. Harry Kane has given John Terry and particularly Gary Cahill a torrid time tonight."

  71. Post update

    Tottenham 4-1 Chelsea

The Chelsea supporters in White Hart Lane look like they've seen a ghost. Gary Cahill must feel something similar - all he's seen and felt of Harry Kane this evening is a flash of white shirt and an eerie feeling. He's been torn apart by the new darling of the Lane.

  72. Tottenham 4-1 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"If you're a Tottenham supporter, you'll know about their terrible record against Chelsea. This could be a game Spurs win 5-1, 6-1 or 7-1. Why not go for it? This is something that could happen once in your lifetime. If I was Harry Kane, I'd want the match ball."

Bitter Blue: Costa is fouled in the build up to the Spurs penalty but somehow Phil Dowd sees it as a free-kick to Spurs.

  75. Tottenham 4-1 Chelsea

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"It's a marvellous turn away from Nemanja Matic. He passes into into the far corner. Wonderful play and a super finish from Harry Kane. It's another goal for a player who brings so much enthusiasm and willingness to this Tottenham side, along with his quality."

  76. GOAL

Tottenham 4-1 Chelsea - Harry Kane

    Harry Kane celebrates

"Hi Mauricio, it's Carlo. About Harry..."

We jest, but Real Madrid and other giants of European football will be sitting up and noticing Harry Kane now he's tearing Chelsea apart. The young Englishman puts Spurs 4-1 (four-one!) up against Chelsea by spinning Nemanja Matic on the edge of the box and placing a shot across the keeper and into the bottom corner. Sheer brilliance.

Chelsea have been at the top of the Premier League since 18 August. Yet they are 45 minutes away from ending the first day of a new year second, behind Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho could do worse than ring up Sean Dyche and ask the Burnley manager to talk to the Chelsea players at half-time. They need a Clarets-like comeback now.

Imagine that booming, gravelly voice over speakerphone in the dressing room.

Phil Hakim: Five academy players in the Spurs starting line-up, four of them eligible for England, three of them have scored. Just saying.

Kaushik Gorai: Harry Kane absolutely destroying Chelsea here. He can be world class. But, he needs to be kept grounded. Stick with the basics.

Ed Dymott: Only a Tottenham fan can be on the one hand delirious but on the other convinced we are going to mess this up!

    Tottenham 3-1 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"Harry Kane's equaliser gave Tottenham confidence. They've pressed and harried. Chelsea have been poor in possession. That's given Tottenham the ball and they've broken at speed. But are three goals enough for Spurs? Will they need a fourth or a fifth? Chelsea will have a spell. Jose Mourinho will make changes.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Mourinho puts Didier Drogba and Loic Remy on. He would rather lose this 8-7 if he is seen to be going for it. We're going to see a basketball match. It's totally against his beliefs, I know, but Manchester City have won today and this is a London derby. It kills him to play expansive football, but he won't want to lose this game."

Andros Townsend steps up and shows real composure to put the ball into the bottom corner, beyond the reach of Thibaut Courtois. That goal has rocked Chelsea who, as it stands, are now second in the Premier League. Manchester City go top.

  93. PENALTY FOR TOTTENHAM

Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea - Danny Rose

    Danny Rose

Danny Rose has been getting some stick on Twitter, but he's the toast of the Lane (and the blue half of Manchester) now. The flying full-back is johnny on the spot to sidefoot the ball into an empty net after Nacer Chadli had hit the post. It all came from Christian Eriksen's driving run from midfield. Jose's looking a little perplexed now.

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"Cesc Fabregas hasn't really got into the game yet. In terms of a Chelsea threat, it's Diego Costa and Eden Hazard who have caused all the problems so far.

"I've been to White Hart Lane a number of times this season, and seen Tottenham make it very hard work for themselves at home, but this has been a different kettle of fish altogether."

Are Tottenham on for another here? Nacer Chadli is through on goal and puts the ball through the keeper's legs but it hits the base of the post as the flag goes up for offside.

"Chelsea are finishing the half strongly. This has been a good response from them since Tottenham's equaliser."

  99. Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"Apart from that 10 minutes or so when they lost the plot, Tottenham have been brave in possession. They're playing the ball out from the back when under pressure from Chelsea. You have to be brave; you have to do that. You can't keep giving the ball back to Chelsea by just clearing it under pressure."

    Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

Chelsea have shaken off their Harry Kane-induced shock and regained some sort of direction. Typically it's Branislav Ivanovic who gives it them as he charges into the box but Danny Rose manages to stop the marauding defender in his tracks.

Jay: Tottenham would be title contenders if only they hade 3-4 more of those Harry Kanes.

Sophie Gayter: Kane is turning into a real player. Gotta be in the next England squad for sure. What a strike.

Gavin Scott: Fair to say I don't recognise this Harry Kane from the one who looked completely out of his depth at Norwich. Great goal lad.

Neal Collins: Harry Kane ground-level cracker. He'll be off to Real Madrid soon this lad.

  102. Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"The improvement in Harry Kane over the last 12 months has been remarkable. You can see the confidence he's got. That's come through playing football, being given the opportunity and grasping it. He's brimming at the moment. Any shot he puts in is on target, and that's giving him a chance. Spurs have been lifted."

Is Harry Kane the most exciting young English striker since Wayne Rooney 10 years ago? Alan Shearer would have been proud of that finish. Pure quality.

  104. Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea

    Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"Harry Kane's just drifted past five players easily. That's why Jose Mourinho's got a stony faced look - his players didn't put the challenges in. It's a great positive run by Kane, but it's really poor defending. If I'm managing Chelsea and I see someone drift past five defenders so easily, I'm not going to be happy. That's put Tottenham back in a game that was threatening to get away from them."

This boy can play. Tottenham have unearthed a gem of rare quality in Harry Kane - the young Englishman hauling his side back into this match by picking up the ball 35 yards out from goal, driving into a central area and away from the attentions of Oscar before burying a low shot beyond Thibaut Courtois. Very good. Very, very good.

All of a sudden, Tottenham just can't seem to cope with Chelsea's midfield runners. Diego Costa is throwing his weight around and his buddies are right behind him - Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian all looking dangerous.

  110. Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

    Bradley Allen

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"This is very similar to the game at Stamford Bridge at the start of December. Tottenham started very well, then Chelsea got a couple of goals and that was that. Tottenham must keep it at 1-0. If they do that, they're in with a chance."

  111. PENALTY APPEAL

    Jan Vertonghen

Chelsea want a penalty. The ball appears to strike a felled Jan Vertonghen on the hand with Oscar about to pounce. Jose likes it. The ref doesn't. I'm with the ref, I think. Moments later, Chelsea sweep forward again and Oscar's shot is saved by Hugo Lloris.

How often do Chelsea do this? They've been second-best in the first 15 minutes or so but they storm up the other end and take the lead through Diego Costa.

Eden Hazard makes it, though, by racing past Danny Rose and driving into the box before angling a shot across the keeper but against the base of the post. Oscar picks up the rebound and directs it towards goal where it is poked in by Diego Costa.

Tottenham continue to look the better side - taking the game to their visitors and watching Thibaut Courtois make a decent save from Nacer Chadli's right-footed shot. There's plenty of pace and movement about the fluid Spurs forward line.

    Harry Kane

There's a touch of the Wayne Rooneys about Harry Kane, who is dropping into midfield to win the ball and then set Tottenham on the attack. Does he need to be more positionally disciplined as Tottenham's focal point up front?

Pellegrini tells BBC Radio 5 live: "We are not thinking about Chelsea. We will take care of them in the last week of January when we play them. We have to keep winning our games. We have taken 29 points from our last 33 and we have to keep going in this way."

So, after today's results, Chelsea's one-time eight-point lead over Manchester City have been cut down to zero by the defending champions. The west London side, of course, have this game in hand and manager Jose Mourinho is not concerned about letting such a big advantage slip at the halfway point in the season.

"We are top of the league at the end of the first round because we deserve it and because it is a consequence of what we did," Mourinho said. "Chelsea is playing very well since the beginning of the season. That's the only thing we work at, the only thing we concentrate on."

"They're also unbeaten in nine league meetings with Tottenham, who've won just four home top-flight matches this season, scoring a mere seven goals in their last nine.

"So you can understand why some bookies rate Spurs as the worst team to back for a New Year's Day home Premier League victory."

  142. Team news

Tottenham make three changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Manchester United last time out, with Danny Rose in for Ben Davies, Nabil Bentaleb replacing Benjamin Stambouli and Kyle Walker in for Vlad Chiriches.

Chelsea, who could lose their place at the top of the Premier League, also change three. In come Cesar Azpilicueta, Oscar and Willian, with Filipe Luis, John Obi Mikel and Andre Schurrle sitting out.

    Jose Mourinho

How do football managers spend their New Year's Eve?

Do they drive into the city centre and take in the festivities with their families while their players are safely tucked up in bed? Or do they have a nice bottle of claret at home, watch Jools Holland then walk the dog while the fireworks are exploding above their head?

I'd wager it was the latter for Jose Mourinho last night.
