Chelsea have shaken off their Harry Kane-induced shock and regained some sort of direction. Typically it's Branislav Ivanovic who gives it them as he charges into the box but Danny Rose manages to stop the marauding defender in his tracks.

Jay:, external Tottenham would be title contenders if only they hade 3-4 more of those Harry Kanes.

Sophie Gayter:, external Kane is turning into a real player. Gotta be in the next England squad for sure. What a strike.

Gavin Scott:, external Fair to say I don't recognise this Harry Kane from the one who looked completely out of his depth at Norwich. Great goal lad.

Neal Collins:, external Harry Kane ground-level cracker. He'll be off to Real Madrid soon this lad.

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"The improvement in Harry Kane over the last 12 months has been remarkable. You can see the confidence he's got. That's come through playing football, being given the opportunity and grasping it. He's brimming at the moment. Any shot he puts in is on target, and that's giving him a chance. Spurs have been lifted."

  4. Postpublished at 18:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2015

Is Harry Kane the most exciting young English striker since Wayne Rooney 10 years ago? Alan Shearer would have been proud of that finish. Pure quality.

"Harry Kane's just drifted past five players easily. That's why Jose Mourinho's got a stony faced look - his players didn't put the challenges in. It's a great positive run by Kane, but it's really poor defending. If I'm managing Chelsea and I see someone drift past five defenders so easily, I'm not going to be happy. That's put Tottenham back in a game that was threatening to get away from them."

This boy can play. Tottenham have unearthed a gem of rare quality in Harry Kane - the young Englishman hauling his side back into this match by picking up the ball 35 yards out from goal, driving into a central area and away from the attentions of Oscar before burying a low shot beyond Thibaut Courtois. Very good. Very, very good.

Franklioni:, external When will Spurs actually fix the gaps in their team? A left-back and a striker.

Daniel Stack:, external I said "Danny Rose to be at fault for a goal" when I saw the line up. Week in week out for him.

Omar:, external Well done Phil Dowd - that offside was a tricky no-call and he got it exactly right.

"Tottenham could do with a decent shot on target here, just to remind Chelsea that they're in the game."

Diego Costa is everywhere this evening. How can a centre-half pick him up? Just check out his touch map.

All of a sudden, Tottenham just can't seem to cope with Chelsea's midfield runners. Diego Costa is throwing his weight around and his buddies are right behind him - Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian all looking dangerous.

    Bradley Allen
Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"This is very similar to the game at Stamford Bridge at the start of December. Tottenham started very well, then Chelsea got a couple of goals and that was that. Tottenham must keep it at 1-0. If they do that, they're in with a chance."

  12. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 17:55 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2015

Chelsea want a penalty. The ball appears to strike a felled Jan Vertonghen on the hand with Oscar about to pounce. Jose likes it. The ref doesn't. I'm with the ref, I think. Moments later, Chelsea sweep forward again and Oscar's shot is saved by Hugo Lloris.

If memory serves me right, the same happened in the reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge. Tottenham enjoyed the better of the early proceedings, didn't score and then Chelsea went in front. Textbook from Jose's men.

    Steve Claridge
BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"It's tough for Tottenham to take, because they started so well. Unfortunately for Tottenham, Danny Rose doesn't do his job, and Eden Hazard darts past him. Oscar puts it back into the danger area, and when you do that, who is there? Inevitably, it's Diego Costa."

How often do Chelsea do this? They've been second-best in the first 15 minutes or so but they storm up the other end and take the lead through Diego Costa.

Eden Hazard makes it, though, by racing past Danny Rose and driving into the box before angling a shot across the keeper but against the base of the post. Oscar picks up the rebound and directs it towards goal where it is poked in by Diego Costa.

    Steve Claridge
BBC Radio 5 live at White Hart Lane

"Mousa Dembele has just looked across to the Tottenham bench as if to say: 'Do you want me to play in this deep lying role, sitting in front of this back four?' Mauricio Pochettino has just given him the thumbs up to say: 'Yes, I want you there as a straight swap.'"

  17. Postpublished at 17:47 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2015

Tottenham continue to look the better side - taking the game to their visitors and watching Thibaut Courtois make a decent save from Nacer Chadli's right-footed shot. There's plenty of pace and movement about the fluid Spurs forward line.

There's a touch of the Wayne Rooneys about Harry Kane, who is dropping into midfield to win the ball and then set Tottenham on the attack. Does he need to be more positionally disciplined as Tottenham's focal point up front?

Jared Maobe:, external With all he has given so far, and due respect, I think Diego Costa has been disappointing of late.

Shohidur Rahman:, external Spurs can win today if their star player performs for them. What was his name again?.......Luck.

Ian Marks:, external I have a baaad feeling about this game #COYS

  20. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 17:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2015

Finally, Tottenham make a change. Ryan Mason succumbed to his injury three minutes ago and Mousa Dembele is his eventual like-for-like replacement.
