  1. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2015

That won't make Tim Sherwood smile, though, as Aston Villa let their guard down when defending a Matty James corner, Marcin Wasilewski jumps to flick it on and the ball glances the outside of the post. Close.

First sight of Christian Benteke as he tries to peel away from the defence to chase a through ball, but is offside.

Television cameras then slowly zoom in on Tim Sherwood in the directors' box, a ripple of applause from the home fans and a sheepish smile from the former Tottenham boss.

"That statistic of 12 goals for Aston Villa is totally unacceptable with the quality of the players they have. Benteke has come back in but they haven't really got the best out of him. Tim Sherwood has to work out how to do that. He needs service and men committed forward."

Andreas Weimann has a pop for Aston Villa but highlights the home side's lack of confidence in front of goal as he lashes it comfortably wide.

Now it is Leicester's turn with a corner, Riyad Mahrez - who was hugely impressive against Arsenal in midweek - takes it, but can't find a team-mate and Villa clear. Poor.

"I bumped into Tim Sherwood in the car park this morning and we had a chat. Basically I think he wants to play front foot football and get the best out of Christian Benteke. I don't think Villa have used him to the best of his ability this season. They have played too much possession football and lost their identity. I think they will go back to how they were playing before - fast, counter-attacking football, using Benteke's ability in the air and on the ground."

Aston Villa, perhaps keen to impress their new manager, are immediately on the attack, winning an early corner. It is swung in from the left and goes over a crowded box and through to Ron Vlaar on the far side, who tries to to hook the ball back in but Leicester clear.

    Former England captain Alan Shearer

"When I look at Leicester I see basic errors week-in, week out that lead to goals. That has to stop if they are to progress in this competition and if they are to have any chance of staying in the Premier League."

Joel West-Ward: Kamikaze football. However, that is probably what Villa need right now. Last season I was a huge critic of his because of his insistence on playing an unbalanced midfield, but as we all know, Villa need to take a more attacking approach, and at least Sherwood has the 'passion' that is so adored in this country.

Nick Lovell: As fans, we have a responsibility to welcome our new coach and help him fire up the team, come on Villa, get behind our man!

Jon Quigley: He seems to be the man off the moment. Did he actually do that well at Spurs? I'm not so sure, this is a massive call for Randy Lerner. I think they need a more established manager but with no one really available at moment this seems like a panic appointment to me.

"It's been difficult times for both clubs off the pitch, but this is a good distraction. It will be a cagey affair at first but a crowd like this, they are hoping for an open game. I think Tim Sherwood is a great appointment for Aston Villa. With the players they have got and his know-how, I think he can bring Villa forward. Hopefully he can do the same with Christian Benteke as he did with Emmanuel Adebayor."

"Leicester just need to hold it for the first 15 - 20 minutes. They need to keep it nice and tight. Leicester have got some good flair players who can hurt the opposition, but first they must keep things tight."

  12. KICK-OFFpublished at 12:31 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2015

Leicester City supporters are the most vocal as the game gets under way, chants of "only one Nigel Pearson" ringing out. No chants as yet for Tim Sherwood's name from the home fans. All they want is to see their side win for now.

On Tim Sherwood's appointment as Aston Villa manager: "The players need boundaries, they need to know what's correct and what the manager wants them to do. Villa could quite easily go down. The players have got to go out and earn their corn."

Out come the two teams and the players line up for the customary handshakes. The photographers are looking in the opposite direction, though, cameras pointing up to the directors' box to get a shot of Tim Sherwood.

Brian and Joseph Connolly are both optimistic of seeing Aston Villa into the quarter-finals. Joseph is particularly confident: "Villa will score 10!"

While dad's going for a comparatively conservative 3-0 to the Villains.

"I know Tim Sherwood and he would have had some sort of input into the team selection and how they are going to approach this game. Are Villa going to be a counter-attacking team or will they go on the front foot? These are the questions the fans will be asking.

"Sherwood is a fantastic forward thinking manager and had a winning ratio at Spurs, but he knew the club inside out, he won't have that here. He has not been in this position before - he has to get them out of this relegation dog fight."

  18. Postpublished at 12:20 Greenwich Mean Time 15 February 2015

    Former England captain Alan Shearer

"If this was a league game you'd be nailed on for a 0-0 draw! But what you can expect today is that they will take the reins off and enjoy it. I always felt different playing in the FA Cup. The pressure of playing in the Premier League is off the players, they can go and play with freedom.

"The Villa players will also be keen to impress their new manager Tim Sherwood."
