"You expect a lot more quality from Di Maria, three or four crosses he has over hit and he just hasn't settled in the game."

United move it nicely out to Angel Di Maria, three men in the middle - and he shanks it out for a goal kick. That is rubbish.

Nothing too intricate about Preston's line of questioning, a huge thump down the middle, Joe Garner and Kevin Davies go for the header and United have to hack it out for a throw. Long balls have never been so in vogue.

"Manchester United need to move the ball quicker. The top teams play with intensity and pace which United aren't doing here yet."

There's been a clamour from some United fans to get Ander Herrera into this team and he shows a glimpse of why with a fine slide-rule pass down the outside to send Antonio Valencia away. His cross sees Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney attack the ball at the far post - but they can't get an effort away.

The ball eventually comes through to Angel Di Maria but his pass isn't gathered in by Radamel Falcao.

We mentioned earlier that Preston must make the most of their set-pieces and they do this time, Paul Gallagher landing a free-kick on the money from wide on the left, Joe Garner gets there first but heads over the top. Good chance for the League One side.

Aessof:, external What does anyone see in Fellaini as a footballer? He offers very limited options I feel. And playing him up front too?

Chris Hall:, external Fellaini's ball control is lamentable.

Phil Johnson:, external United need midfielders who can create chances for the forwards. Rooney and Falcao can't pass to themselves.

Clumsy from Kevin Davies as he clatters into Antonio Valencia - but Preston's work rate has been exemplary so far. Davies and Joe Garner are harrying the United backline, the midfield are tracking their men and up front Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao have been kept quiet.

"Man United are edging it on possession but it is a good tempo and the two teams are cancelling each other out."

Angel Di Maria has had a mixed start to the game but twice in quick succession he floats away from challenges in midfield and threatens to find a striker in the area. Like Falcao, he should be doing more though.

"Chris Smalling just needs to deal with situations earlier. Sometimes he creates problems that are all of his own making."

Great block! Luke Shaw does well down the left for Manchester United and puts in a low cross, Wayne Rooney arrives on it to crack in a hot but top work from John Welsh, who has tracked his man and stopped the shot with a thigh.

Chris Hall:, external Impressed with the pressing, energy and team spirit on show tonight. Sadly it's coming from Preston.

Andy Donley:, external I'd dread to think how low Angel Di Maria's pass completion rate is. Think he's fundamentally opposed to playing it simple.

Ben Eardley:, external Joe Garner has started diving already! He's an embarrassment to the game.

Lazy from Radamel Falcao, he doesn't hold the ball up well and he loses it cheaply.

Is it fair to call Falcao a flop yet? Not offered much for me. He kept me up typing till 2am on deadline day last August as well. I bear a grudge.

Angel Di Maria to take it - curls over the wall and wide! But not by too much. Thorsten Stuckmann didn't move in the Preston net.

Better from Preston, they've had a lot more of the ball in the last few minutes. But now they give away a free-kick in a dangerous area. The crowd goes noticeably quiet. Anticipation? Dread?

"Preston have to get their wing-backs higher up the pitch. They've been pinned into their own half here so far."

Backpass of the season! Admittedly that's a niche award, but a Preston midfielder turns and rifles a 50-yard ball back to Thorsten Stuckmann in the Preston net. It's neck high, not an easy one to deal with, but the German chests it down and volleys away upfield.

    Lovely stuff.
