  3. 'It was 100% a penalty'published at 18:57 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

    Southampton boss Ronald Koeman:

"With the first penalty appeal, maybe Filip Djuricic fell too easy. But the second one is a 100% penalty and we know these moments are difficult. We did everything to win this game, we had the best chances and we were unlucky with some decisions. With the handball incident with the goalkeeper, maybe there were hands, maybe no hands. But the second one is a penalty - it can't be clearer.

"It's frustrating because we don't have the results we need and expect. But I think today we played very good football. Everything is about scoring goals and we have struggled there in recent weeks. I enjoyed watching Southampton today, but I was disappointed with the result.

"I have confidence that we can finish in the top four because we showed we are a very good team. But it's all about scoring goals. You can't do anything about Philippe Coutinho's goal. I can't say Liverpool were the better team. Maybe they were cleverer, because they scored two goals and we didn't."

  4. 'A giant step'published at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

    Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers:

"We knew if we drew the game today, there were enough games still to make a challenge for the top four. But to win the game was a giant step. We've beaten Southampton home and away that's a sign of how well we're playing.

"We came under a lot of pressure in the first 15 minutes. The only disappointment was we could have been better on the ball, but the conditions were very difficult. The overall performance was very good.

"Phil Coutinho's goal was a wonderful goal in terms of the system of how we play, working the ball to the sides and drawing players out. It's a wonderful strike and a wonderful goal.

"[Southampton's penalty appeal] Sometimes, decisions can go against you. I can see why Kevin Friend didn't give it. The ball's getting away from him and he pushes his body into Joe Allen. Then Joe swings at the ball and doesn't make contact. I thought Kevin was excellent, he was under pressure from the crowd but he had great control of the game.

"It's exciting. It's fantastic. All the teams are up there. My only regret is that we didn't really get going until November. We're three points off third place, which is great."

    Southampton manager Ronald Koeman:

"We know in football, it's all about scoring goals. We played much better than Liverpool, we had more possession, more chances.

"I call it unlucky in the decisions of the referee. The second situation is a clear penalty to Filip Djuricic.

"Two-nil down, I'm very disappointed about the result but not our performance. It was the same in the first game with Liverpool.

"With the quality up front maybe we are struggling a bit in last few games because in the last four games we score one goal.

"It is a great goal (from Philippe Coutinho), the keeper can't do anything about it. Great goal but we had a great start in the game and we didn't deserve to be one-nil down.

"We have more ball domination, we create four or five good positions to score and the referee didn't whistle for a clear penalty.

"Sometimes you need that luck on your side and in the last few games we don't have that."

Josh Lewin: Liverpool have now done the double over both Spurs and Southampton, arguably their closest rivals. Important results.

Adam Cornish: All of a sudden that Liverpool v Manchester United game next month has become more important than ever.

Pius Mordi: English commentators need to pronounce Jordon Ibe's name correctly. Its 'eebay' not 'aib'. His dad is Nigerian.

    Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers:

"It was a game we wanted a positive result from. Through winning it we would go three points behind third place, it would be a huge result and it was.

"We controlled the game as it went on. Our passing could have been better but the conditions were bad. To come here after a European game and get a win, it's a great result from the players.

"[On the Southampton penalty appeals] The player has gone over far too easy, no way that was a penalty. I thought referee Kevin Friend was excellent and I think all his decisions were right.

"To come here and keep a clean sheet is a great effort."

The top two look pretty sewn up but the next two places in the Champions League are very much up for grabs. Liverpool have hit form at the right time but it's a brave man like Alex Pryke to make a call at this stage...

Theworldwidewebs: Same top four as last year I think but the Manchester City game next week will be huge both for Liverpool and Manchester United. Going to be interesting.

  13. "We could have had two penalties"published at 18:24 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

    Southampton forward Filip Djuricic:

"We lost today but I think the whole game we had the ball in our possession and we had a couple of chances. If we opened the game with an early goal it could be have been different.

"We could have had two penalties but the referee didn't whistle.

"The first one I feel the contact, it was light contact but I fell down. The second one was more a penalty than the first one for sure. I feel his hand on my shoulder and I fell down.

"The first one was little bit light and this is England so there are a different type of criteria for the penalty, but the second one definitely."

    Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson:

"It's a big win. We knew coming here would be difficult as they are a good side and we had to be at our best. From the defence right through the team we were excellent. The perfect performance really.

"Philippe Coutinho's goal was outstanding but he does that a lot in training. He is outstanding, he got his goal and to give us big lift from the start.

"It's a good weekend for us, but most important is that we win and keep winning and concentrate on what we need to do."

Shohidur Rahman: Fair play to Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool are a completely different team to the one of the early season. This coming from a Manchester United fan.

Madhavan Raman: Five teams separated by four points. Hotting up nicely for the Champions League spots.

Pete Stanger: Southampton need to get shots off more. The build-up play is great, but every time they're in the box they look lost.

Ray Muir, Edinburgh: Daniel Sturridge was the difference and if Liverpool had had him fit earlier there is no question they'd be sitting in the top three.

Tom, Durham: Strange and disappointing people were so quick to target Brendan Rodgers earlier in the season, this year seems reminiscent of his first; steadily improving performances over the course of the season. Understandable given the summer's upheaval.

Harry Le May: It's the third week in a row that Graziano Pelle has contributed nothing as the lone striker. The lack of any other options up front has allowed him to slip into a seriously complacent state, and now he's stuck there.

"As the game wore on Liverpool became more convincing, but Ronald Koeman and Southampton will hark back to the penalty decisions they weren't given. It would have been interesting to see how Liverpool would have played if they had gone behind, but Southampton were bereft of ideas by the end."
