Another incident-packed game at St Mary's with yet more penalty shouts, who should feel hard done by?

Everton fans, do you still have faith in Romelu Lukaku? And West Ham fans, is Sam still the man? Was it a penalty or did Harry Kane go down too easily?

  3. 'It was 100% a penalty'

    Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

    Southampton boss Ronald Koeman:

"With the first penalty appeal, maybe Filip Djuricic fell too easy. But the second one is a 100% penalty and we know these moments are difficult. We did everything to win this game, we had the best chances and we were unlucky with some decisions. With the handball incident with the goalkeeper, maybe there were hands, maybe no hands. But the second one is a penalty - it can't be clearer.

"It's frustrating because we don't have the results we need and expect. But I think today we played very good football. Everything is about scoring goals and we have struggled there in recent weeks. I enjoyed watching Southampton today, but I was disappointed with the result.

"I have confidence that we can finish in the top four because we showed we are a very good team. But it's all about scoring goals. You can't do anything about Philippe Coutinho's goal. I can't say Liverpool were the better team. Maybe they were cleverer, because they scored two goals and we didn't."

  4. 'A giant step'

    Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

    Brendan Rodgers

    Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers:

"We knew if we drew the game today, there were enough games still to make a challenge for the top four. But to win the game was a giant step. We've beaten Southampton home and away that's a sign of how well we're playing.

"We came under a lot of pressure in the first 15 minutes. The only disappointment was we could have been better on the ball, but the conditions were very difficult. The overall performance was very good.

"Phil Coutinho's goal was a wonderful goal in terms of the system of how we play, working the ball to the sides and drawing players out. It's a wonderful strike and a wonderful goal.

"[Southampton's penalty appeal] Sometimes, decisions can go against you. I can see why Kevin Friend didn't give it. The ball's getting away from him and he pushes his body into Joe Allen. Then Joe swings at the ball and doesn't make contact. I thought Kevin was excellent, he was under pressure from the crowd but he had great control of the game.

"It's exciting. It's fantastic. All the teams are up there. My only regret is that we didn't really get going until November. We're three points off third place, which is great."

  7. Manager reaction

    Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

    Koeman

    Southampton manager Ronald Koeman:

"We know in football, it's all about scoring goals. We played much better than Liverpool, we had more possession, more chances.

"I call it unlucky in the decisions of the referee. The second situation is a clear penalty to Filip Djuricic.

"Two-nil down, I'm very disappointed about the result but not our performance. It was the same in the first game with Liverpool.

"With the quality up front maybe we are struggling a bit in last few games because in the last four games we score one goal.

"It is a great goal (from Philippe Coutinho), the keeper can't do anything about it. Great goal but we had a great start in the game and we didn't deserve to be one-nil down.

"We have more ball domination, we create four or five good positions to score and the referee didn't whistle for a clear penalty.

"Sometimes you need that luck on your side and in the last few games we don't have that."

Josh Lewin: Liverpool have now done the double over both Spurs and Southampton, arguably their closest rivals. Important results.

Adam Cornish: All of a sudden that Liverpool v Manchester United game next month has become more important than ever.

Pius Mordi: English commentators need to pronounce Jordon Ibe's name correctly. Its 'eebay' not 'aib'. His dad is Nigerian.

  9. Manager reaction

    Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

    Brendan Rodgers

    Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers:

"It was a game we wanted a positive result from. Through winning it we would go three points behind third place, it would be a huge result and it was.

"We controlled the game as it went on. Our passing could have been better but the conditions were bad. To come here after a European game and get a win, it's a great result from the players.

"[On the Southampton penalty appeals] The player has gone over far too easy, no way that was a penalty. I thought referee Kevin Friend was excellent and I think all his decisions were right.

"To come here and keep a clean sheet is a great effort."

  10. Post update

"Football's all about scoring goals" says Ronald Koeman. He's not wrong.

  13. "We could have had two penalties"

    Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

    Southampton forward Filip Djuricic:

"We lost today but I think the whole game we had the ball in our possession and we had a couple of chances. If we opened the game with an early goal it could be have been different.

"We could have had two penalties but the referee didn't whistle.

"The first one I feel the contact, it was light contact but I fell down. The second one was more a penalty than the first one for sure. I feel his hand on my shoulder and I fell down.

"The first one was little bit light and this is England so there are a different type of criteria for the penalty, but the second one definitely."

  14. Coming up on BBC TV

  15. Player reaction

    Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

    Jordan Henderson

    Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson:

"It's a big win. We knew coming here would be difficult as they are a good side and we had to be at our best. From the defence right through the team we were excellent. The perfect performance really.

"Philippe Coutinho's goal was outstanding but he does that a lot in training. He is outstanding, he got his goal and to give us big lift from the start.

"It's a good weekend for us, but most important is that we win and keep winning and concentrate on what we need to do."

Ray Muir, Edinburgh: Daniel Sturridge was the difference and if Liverpool had had him fit earlier there is no question they'd be sitting in the top three.

Tom, Durham: Strange and disappointing people were so quick to target Brendan Rodgers earlier in the season, this year seems reminiscent of his first; steadily improving performances over the course of the season. Understandable given the summer's upheaval.

Harry Le May: It's the third week in a row that Graziano Pelle has contributed nothing as the lone striker. The lack of any other options up front has allowed him to slip into a seriously complacent state, and now he's stuck there.

"As the game wore on Liverpool became more convincing, but Ronald Koeman and Southampton will hark back to the penalty decisions they weren't given. It would have been interesting to see how Liverpool would have played if they had gone behind, but Southampton were bereft of ideas by the end."

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

"Daniel Sturridge has made a massive difference since coming on for Liverpool. Just having somebody who can get hold of it up top, somebody who knows how to play that role, has made Liverpool far more dangerous."

  27. Post update

    Southampton 0-2 Liverpool

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

    Raheem Sterling

"The weather plays a bit of a part in Southampton's poor defending, but Raheem Sterling has put the game to bed. We said Southampton had the space to get back into the game, but they've lacked quality and ideas. The longer the game has gone on the less they have looked like scoring."

  37. GOAL

Southampton 0-2 Liverpool - Raheem Sterling

    Raheem Sterling

Two shots, two goals for Liverpool! But they are given two or three helping hands from Southampton on the way. Morgan Schneiderlin starts it by playing a careless square ball straight to Alberto Moreno. He drives on and crosses from the left, it's poor though and should be easily dealt with.

However Matty Targett slips as he goes to clear with his wrong foot and can only cough it up to Raheem Sterling 15 yards out. He side-foots in a shot which takes a nick on its way, and even then Fraser Forster might save it. He doesn't. Two nil.

  38. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

"Daniel Sturridge went round Jose Fonte as if the Southampton defender just didn't exist. But I have no idea why he did not shoot there, it was an unbelievable chance. Southampton look like they are running out of ideas now."

  39. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Brilliant stuff from Daniel Sturridge, he does Jose Fonte with a bodyswerve of Chris Waddle proportions, just ghosts past him. He goes to pull the trigger but Maya Yoshida makes a cracking follow-up tackle and clears.

Into the last 20 minutes of what has turned into a bit of a trial.

  40. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

It's all too central, Southampton trying to thread the eye of a needle with six or seven men inside a 20x20 yard box. Without Andres Iniesta or Lionel Messi it's hard to score playing like that.

  42. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Raheem Sterling

Southampton push on but here's the danger on the break. Raheem Sterling carries it, Philippe Coutinho is involved and finds Daniel Sturridge on the left. He waits for the overlap of Alberto Moreno, the left-back looks up and pops one into the run of Jordan Henderson - who can't control his effort on the stride.

  43. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool have still only had one shot on goal all game. It was an eye-watering beauty, true enough. But still.

Sadio Mane then breaks into the box and has two men over but he hesitates and the chance has gone.

  44. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

"This game has been crying out for Daniel Sturridge to come on and give Liverpool an outlet. It's been totally unconvincing from them. They've been lucky Southampton haven't had enough about their game so far either. If Southampton can get a good ball into Graziano Pelle, he will get a goal. He has dominated those three Liverpool centre-halves."

  45. SUBSTITUTION

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Adam Lallana

Former Southampton captain Adam Lallana gets a mixed reaction as he is replaced, Daniel Sturridge takes his place. That should see Rahem Sterling move out wider.

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Jordon Ibe, quite literally twice the man I saw playing for Wycombe as a waifish 15-year-old, skips away from two defenders with an ease which can only bode well for his future. He runs out of room and gives the ball away but he's clearly an exciting talent for Liverpool.

Can we get a shot on target though? Goalmouth scramble? Defensive/goalkeeping howler? That's what it needs as a spectacle.

  49. SUBSTITUTION

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Something's got to change if the Saints are to level and maybe this is the switch that will do it. Sadio Mane is on in place of James Ward-Prowse.

  50. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

    Raheem Sterling

"Raheem Sterling does not look like an out-and-out centre-forward. Yes he will turn at you but if defenders are brave and prepared to go tight on him, then you wonder if it really is his strongest position. Sterling is a wonderful player, but do you get the best out of him there?"

  51. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

It's the sort of sodden afternoon which makes every block, tackle and header sting like no other. You'd have to wring your socks out before you take them home. As a result the early sparkle and interplay has largely disappeared from the game. Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe aren't built for days like this, when the wind gusts and the rain pours.

  52. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Graziano Pelle

James Ward-Prowse with a corner for the Saints, whipped in but flicked away from danger by a Liverpool head. The hosts starting on the front foot but Liverpool are built to counter with Jordon Ibe and Raheem Sterling.

Saints switch it nicely and it ends up with Graziano Pelle dragging a shot wide.

  53. Post update

    Mourinho magic

    Jose Mourinho

A few highlights from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's extended interview this morning:

"I am not attacking the honesty, the dignity of anyone. I am not trying to - and in this country you love this sentence - 'bring the game into disrepute.' I am trying to be honest.

"If we are in a normal situation when decision sometimes go for us, sometimes go against us, we could be five points clear, we could be 12. It could be 12 points.

"If the referee cannot see a penalty three metres in front of him, some official in front of a screen cannot miss it.

"It could be the end of Nemanja Matic's career. A criminal tackle. Matic is a very lucky guy.

"Another club would have the power to appeal Matic's red card."

  60. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

"Southampton will consider themselves a little bit unlucky. Certainly they should have had at least one penalty, and they've conceded from an absolute 'worldy'. Every ball they've put into the Liverpool box has caused all sorts of panic.

"It hasn't always been fluent but it has been an intriguing game. It's very open, and you feel there is an awful lot more to come from both sides, if only we could dredge up a little bit more quality."

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge

BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

    Simon Mignolet

"At first glance I didn't think Simon Mignolet was out of the box, and if it does hit his hand, it's come off his body. I certainly don't think Eljero Elia does enough there. He never looked like he knew how he was going to finish. In the end he just played it straight at Mignolet."

  64. Post update

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Is that handball?! Simon Mignolet charges down an effort from Eljero Elia outside the box - and referee Kevin Friend says play on. Friend was yards and yards away to be honest, it was a quick ball over the top. The goalkeeper is a lucky boy.

And then another penalty appeal for the Saints as the ball hits Emre Can on the hand. Nothing given...

  65. YELLOW CARD

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Biggest cheer of the day as former Saint Dejan Lovren turns sinner with a slide in on James Ward-Prowse and is booked. The home fans don't like their former defender much.

  66. Player reaction

    Everton 2-2 Leicester

    Leicester striker David Nugent:

"To come from 1-0 down to take the lead and then concede a goal like that at the end is tough. Our away form has been decent and we wanted the three points but at a place like Goodison we will take the point.

"Nobody expected us to get three points, but to concede like that it's a killer.

"I have dreamed of scoring at Goodison Park and I'm made up for the team. We will take a point and go from here.

"I have been with Nigel Pearson for three-and-a-half years and he has been different class. All the players are right behind him."

    Jose Fonte tackles Raheem Sterling

Jose Fonte's tackle on Raheem Sterling was quite remarkable really. He got the ball with one leg and cleaned out the forward with his other one. A buy one, get one free offering.

The home fans - some of them - are starting to get on the case of striker Graziano Pelle. They want more from him. The Italian may look magnificent but he hasn't scored in the league since the end of December.

    Everton 2-2 Leicester

    Leicester City

    Nigel Pearson

    Leicester manager Nigel Pearson:

"It feels a bit like a defeat at the moment because their equaliser came so late but we forced the issue right to the end.

"We frustrated Everton and their fans to a certain extent as we played with a lot of discipline and we looked dangerous.

"What we need is more wins and we will get them if we perform to that standard. We have put in some good performances that have not yielded the points.

"The fashion of the result is the hardest thing. What we have to do is look forward we can't dwell on this. We have very capable players and we have to start turning the performances into results.

"I can't do too much about what is being speculated. i always do my job as conscientiously as I can and I will continue to do that until I am told otherwise. I'm committed to the job and that's all you need to know.

"All managers work in situations where things can change quickly. I have always been very supportive of our owners, and they have of me, and they will make decisions that are right for this football club."

  73. PENALTY APPEAL

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Is that a penalty now? Southampton had two good shouts in the opening stages and now Raheem Sterling has his legs swept away as he tries a neat turn inside the box.

On first glimpse it looks a nailed-on spot-kick, but the replays suggest that Jose Fonte got plenty of the ball first. Who'd be a referee? Not me. Nothing given.

  79. Manager reaction

    Everton 2-2 Leicester

    Everton

    Roberto Martinez

    Everton manager Roberto Martinez:

"The role we had to play was to be patient and not to be frustrated with our play as we had to break down a solid unit. Getting the first goal was important but once we got that we are disappointed as we could have defended a little bit better.

"It is a fantastic sign to have the character we have shown to get a point out of the game. The character was very pleasing on a very difficult day.

"The good aspect of the squad we have is that we have players with different abilities. Darron Gibson has a phenomenal forward pass and is someone we could help open them up.

"Christian Atsu is very agile and can run between the lines and that freshness allowed us to open Leicester City up and get the goals.

"Drawing games is frustrating but as a team we gave everything today. It's been a demanding week and we need to learn about coming back from Europe, but that is not going to happen overnight.

"We need to defend well in the box because at two moments in the match we conceded soft goals. Everyone is in the scrap until you get 40 points, that's the way the league works. Our focus is to get as high up the league as we can.

"When you come back from Europe - you have seen with other teams around - it can be very difficult."

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman believes the Saints lost players to Liverpool last summer for 'non-footballing' reasons.

Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert all swapped St Mary's for Anfield last year, but they have enjoyed differing levels of success since moving for a combined fee reportedly around the £49million mark.

"A reason to move is not always for the player to do about football," Koeman said. "Maybe it's about money.

"We can't pay salaries like the big teams in the Premier League pay. It's always less here.

"If you stay, you stay for different reasons. You stay for the fact you are more sure that you play every weekend and it's not too early - it's about the age of the player and about the experience of the player.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino: "When you analyse the full 90 minutes I think we deserved one point. We started very well, had three chances to score, including the one where Harry Kane hit the post.

"When they scored it was difficult for us to play, because they play very deep and the counter attack is very good for West Ham with Sakho and Valencia who are very fast.

"But in the second half I thought some decisions were against us - the second goal was offside. But we need to finish better and score more goals.

"I think we showed character - that's the most important thing. Going into the last 10 minutes at 2-0 down, to finish the game 2-2 is something to be proud of."

  135. Spurs leave it late

    Tottenham 2-2 West Ham

Tottenham have now picked up 16 points from losing positions this season, more than any other side.

Spurs have won 13 points alone from the final five minutes of matches, also a league-high.

Chris, Cheltenham: On balance a fair result. Danny Rose made up for giving away a goal by scoring and the penalty evened out the referee bottling the Mark Noble red card. Harry Kane had an off day and our reliance on him is troubling. Like watching Gareth Bale's last season all over again!

Freddie, London: I've lost count of the number of times West Ham have drawn or lost from a winning position this season. We just don't have the ability to see the game out! Five minutes of injury time though?

  137. Honest Hammers not getting rewards - Allardyce

    Tottenham 2-2 West Ham

    Harry Kane

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce: "I thought we were going to see the game through nicely but we made a huge mistake at the end. Whether it's a soft penalty or it isn't, it is something we shouldn't have done.

"It's a real disappointment but it was a magnificent performance. The reason we lost the game was a bit of luck for them. We should have done enough at 2-0 up to see it out. That's been our Achilles heel since the turn of the year. We were in front against West Brom and drew 1-1, we were in front against Manchester United and drew 1-1, and we were in front at Swansea and drew 1-1.

"I'm not blaming Harry Kane for going down in the box - we should do more of that. We're an honest team and we've only got one penalty this season. We're not getting rewards for our honesty."

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce: "You can't put your hands on anyone today otherwise they will go to ground and make the referee's mind up.

"You can argue whether Alex Song has made enough contact for Harry Kane to go down, but when you're desperate like Tottenham are, you get touched and the player is going to fall over.

"Maybe we should be more like Tottenham - we stay on our feet. They're so lucky today. One with the first goal - Danny Rose has mishit it - and the second goal Adrian saved the penalty and it has gone straight back to Harry Kane."

It was a nervous penalty to take but when your luck is in your luck is in. My heart was in my mouth when the keeper saved the first shot but it fell nicely for the rebound.

"I think we deserved the draw, we dug deep at 2-0 down and it shows our character. We were sloppy in the first half but at 2-0 down we started playing better and knew what we had to do. Not one head dropped.

"We knew we had half an hour to go, knew if we got one then the second could come. We're delighted to get the draw."

Tottenham 1-2 West Ham - Danny Rose

    Danny Rose celebrates his goal

They all count! A huge miscue from Danny Rose has given Spurs a way back into the game! Adrian punches out a corner, not very well, it runs to Rose on the edge of the box, he tops the shot, complete mishit with all sorts of spin and the ball somehow balloons over Adrian and into the net.

  170. GREAT SAVE!

    Tottenham 0-2 West Ham

Spurs coming to life now! Belter of a free-kick from Christian Eriksen, gets the ball up and over the wall but Adrian makes another fine save.

  171. DISALLOWED GOAL - Tottenham

    Tottenham 0-2 West Ham

Harry Kane does have the ball in the net! But the offside flag is up. Erik Lamela's shot is deflected up, Kane is inches offside so the right call is made to rule out Kane's strike as he converts the loose ball at the second attempt.

Very close, but he was offside.

  172. SUBSTITUTION

    Tottenham 0-2 West Ham

Not the best day from Harry Kane, he's hit the wall. A poor shot is followed by a poor pass as he tries to link up with Roberto Soldado. Spurs lacking any sort of verve or ideas at the moment. Stewart Downing and Diafra Sakho celebrate

"Possibly Enner Valencia is offside but Diafra Sakho came in on an acute angle, with an awful lot to do, and bumped the ball beyond Hugo Lloris. It's deserved, West Ham have been the better side. And that could well prove to be game over. What a result this would be for Sam Allardyce."

  180. GOAL

Tottenham 0-2 West Ham - Diafra Sakho

    Diafra Sakho scores

He missed a sitter a few minutes ago, but moments later Diafra Sakho doubles the lead! Sakho puts a low cross over, it's not dealt with by Kyle Walker, and when Mark Noble puts the cross back in Sakho is able to squeeze it in.

Enner Valencia was offside when Noble's cross came in, but Sakho wasn't. The goal stands.

Leighton Baines returns to Everton's starting line-up after three games out with a knee problem, replacing Bryan Oviedo at left-back, while Aaron Lennon is recalled on the wing, having missed Thursday's 4-1 Europa League over BSC Young Boys because he was cup-tied. Jose Mourinho interview

Jose Mourinho, speaking on Goals on Sunday on Sky Sports, explains why he returned to become Chelsea manager.

    Jose Mourinho

He says: "One of the good things of my career has given me the ability to choose where I wanted to go. I know where my family like to be and are happy. Chelsea was my first love outside of my country and a special place for me. This new Chelsea profile was important to bring me back.

"Mr Abramovich is very sure of what he wants, stability, to meet financial fair play, working completely to the financial fair play rules where to buy you have to sell. We have to work the academy and the project was a real challenge.

    Mauricio Pochettino

"I really think Mauricio Pochettino will be considering bringing on Christian Eriksen. Tottenham are lacking creativity, someone to have some influence on this game. The home side have had some chances but West Ham are doing an excellent job at the moment. How big a win would this be for Sam Allardyce? My prediction is that if they win, he is manager next season. This result would end that conversation."

TWO MINUTES added on as Spurs make more sloppy mistakes at the back, giving away the ball cheaply. Mauricio Pochettino needs to put a rocket under his side at the interval.

Jack Williams: Genuinely sloppy play. Spurs are missing the creativity of Christian Eriksen.

Steve at Longleat: Never understand this resting players thing. Get 3-0 up then rest players, Eriksen more likely to get injured if he comes off the bench. Not like they work 12-hour nights!

"There are real enforcers in the West Ham midfield and Spurs are getting more joy playing a long ball to Harry Kane at times. Mousa Demeble needs to be a bit sharper when playing the shorter give-and-go passes too. There's no point over-complicating in the middle. This game is opening up and I would fancy West Ham to see this through if they got a second."

Excellent feet from Harry Kane as he beats two men down the left but he can't find a team-mate, before he does find Erik Lamela only for the Argentine to lose it. Spurs just not putting it together in the final third.

  214. 'I don't understand why Arsenal aren't up with Chelsea'

    Jose Mourinho interview

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, speaking on Goals On Sunday on Sky Sports, has been giving his views on the current Arsenal squad as well as their boss Arsene Wenger.

    Wenger and Mourinho

"I don't understand why they are not up there with Chelsea and Manchester City," says Mourinho. "Arsenal are a team I like very much. They have very good players and Alexis (Sanchez) is a very important player to add to what they have got. They are a team for more."

On Arsene Wenger, Mourinho says: "He has a dream job, everyone would love to have the security he has of being manager year after year after year. He won so many titles in a certain period and that gave him that credibility he deserves. He is obviously a fantastic manager. He has a fantastic situation to be successful.

"When you look at the players in the squad, they are capable of playing very good football."

West Ham have scored their 15th header of the season, more than any side managed last season (Liverpool with 14).

And they go close to a second goal, again a cross is not dealt with by Spurs, it runs through to Enner Valencia and his shot is well saved by Hugo Lloris, square in the face.

Moments later Harry Kane tees up Ryan Mason to drag one wide from 18 yards. Great game now, it's opening up...

Jose Mourinho has been on fine form this morning (see 11:18 and above), complaining of unfair treatment after Sky Sports used the word 'crimes' to describe some of the controversial moments in Diego Costa's career. The striker got a three-game ban for stamping on Liverpool's Emre Can and only returned to Premier League action on Saturday.

    Here's some of your reaction.

Harry Partridge: Never heard Jose criticise refs when decisions have gone his way. Everyone can see through his mind games these days!

Charles Meyrick: Just awful refereeing this weekend in the Premier League. Referees have been of a poor standard all season really.

Alex, Fulham: I used to think Jose Mourinho was a breath of fresh air to the Premier League with his personality and charisma. Nowadays his constant whining is starting to get a bit dull...

    West Ham celebrate

"A tremendous move, and there have been warning signs. Lovely combination down the left-wing and a delightful cross clipped up by Aaron Cresswell. Hugo Lloris had no chance with Cheikhou Kouyate's powerful header. Pick that one out.

"After spending the first 15 minutes of today's game on the back foot West Ham were growing in to it and starting to have an influence on this game. It's a typical Sam Allardyce performance."

  225. GOAL

Tottenham 0-1 West Ham - Cheikhou Kouyate

Cheikhou Koyate heads the ball past Hugo Lloris

It's been a weekend of fine headers, and there's another one for the list! What a header from Cheikhou Kouyate!

Spurs are to blame though, Mousa Dembele turning into trouble on the edge of his own area, needlessly losing the ball and West Ham are in business. They work the overlap nicely to free Aaron Cresswell on the left, he stands up a cross and Kouyate mercilessly buries the header. Brilliant finish.

  227. 'Van Gaal will have time to win titles'

    Jose Mourinho interview

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, speaking on Sky Sports, talks about Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal. Mourinho worked under the Dutchman when the pair were at Barcelona.

    Mourinho and Van Gaal

Mourinho says: "He is a fantastic coach and it's easy for me to say as I know him so well and he is a fantastic person. But he has been in so many years of his career before he came to England. In the same way a player needs time to adapt to understand things to perform at the highest level it is the same for Louis.

"He will have time to make Manchester United win titles again. This season they still gave a chance to do that with the FA Cup and they also have the opportunity to finish in the top four and go back to the Champions League, which is the minimum for a team like them.

"When you see the titles he has won and his experience, I don't see any reason why they can't be pushing for titles."

The first mistake I think I've seen Harry Kane make for Spurs, a loose touch gives the ball away and starts a West Ham counter attack. This is why the home fans love him though, as Stewart Downing cuts in to shoot, Kane is the man getting back to make the block.

  232. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Harry Kane hits woodwork

West Ham have made 16 passes to Spurs' 71 so far. Stats aren't always a barometer of a game but that's a pretty accurate one. West Ham haven't had a sniff.

Harry Kane! Hits the post! His first strike on goal is a scruffy one, scuffed past Adrian and against the base of the post. Goodness me that was close...

That strike has invigorated Spurs, they are on top now. Nabil Bentaleb has another shot saved and Spurs now win a free-kick in a dangerous area. Christian Eriksen would fancy this. If he wasn't on the bench...

"It was worth a go and Nabil Bentaleb hit the ball as clean as a whistle. Adrian has had a tremendous season for West Ham, and he produced an acrobatic save there to tip the ball wide. Spurs' young players, like Bentaleb, are playing with a lot of confidence."

  235. GREAT SAVE!

    Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

What a strike! Nabil Bentaleb - who has never scored in the Premier League - tries one from 30 yards, a fizzing, swerving left-foot drive and Adrian has to be at full stretch to tip it away. Belting hit!

  236. 'You can't keep everyone happy'

    Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

    James Tomkins

West Ham defender James Tomkins believes that the club will never please all of the fans as manager Sam Allardyce comes back under scrutiny.

Allardyce was a target for some fans following the FA Cup thrashing by West Brom last week, but Tomkins expects Big Sam to stay put.

"It doesn't faze us. Obviously that is out of our hands," Tomkins said when asked about Allardyce's position.

"We have to do what we do on the pitch, whoever takes charge of us next year. It doesn't matter whether it is the (current) manager or not.

"We just have to concentrate on the pitch and that's all we try and do. We don't talk about it much in the dressing room at all. The manager has been brilliant this year. Obviously the fans have taken their frustrations out (on him).

"I know the fans quite well through all the years, they expect the most. It's a big club and rightly so, they pay their money and travel all the way.

"They are all entitled to their opinions. Obviously you are not going to keep everyone happy, there is always going to be a bunch of fans who are going to show their disappointment in a different way."

  237. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

    Tottenham academy coach Bradley Allen

BBC Radio London at White Hart Lane

"A cagey start. If this is a stop-start football match it will suit West Ham more than it will Tottenham. If Spurs can move the ball quickly and stretch their opponents, they will have more joy. With Harry Kane's movement, he tries to create space for the midfielders Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb. That is where we'll see an intriguing battle this afternoon."

Prior to today, Christian Eriksen had started Tottenham's last 34 Premier League games. He's on the bench this afternoon after a full 90 minutes in the Europa League on Thursday night. Will they miss his creativity?

Almost certainly yes. Not much happening so far, West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate has the first 'shot' of the day but it's wild, wild, wild.

  241. We're the new West Ham

    Tottenham 0-0 West Ham

    Harry Kane and Ryan Mason

West Ham produced a crop of youngsters in the 1990s, from Joe Cole to Rio Ferdinand via Michael Carrick and Frank Lampard.

And Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino believes Harry Kane, Ryan Mason and co could signal a similar new era for Spurs.

"We hear in the past that West Ham had a lot of players in the academy who played in the first team - why can't we be like that?" Pochettino said.

"Our philosophy is to give young talent a chance if they deserve it.

"Why is not possible for us to have a lot players in the team from the academy? Are there more I expect to come through? Yes, we detect some players who have the ability to play in the first team in the future.

"It's not because their passport is English, it's if they have the ability to play, they deserve the opportunity."

Tottenham v West Ham (12:00 GMT)

    MOTD2 Extra

Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas: "Qualifying for the Champions League was the goal Tottenham set out before the start of the season, they have now reached the League Cup final and they will desperately want to win that. It being against Chelsea adds further spice."

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson: "I have been impressed Tottenham, they have improved over the course of the season. In Mauricio Pochettino they have found a good manager, and Harry Kane's story has been exceptional, but to break into that Champions League is a massive ask."

  246. Post update

Tottenham v West Ham (12:00 GMT)

More from West Ham manager Sam Allardyce, who is out for the rest of the season.

"We have got a full squad, other than Andy Carroll, and that's what you want. Hopefully we can march on to the end of season picking more points.

"Derbies are only good when you get a result and even better when you win away. We have not forgot we lost in the last minute on the first day of the season."

  247. Post update

Tottenham v West Ham (12:00 GMT)

Here's West Ham manager Sam Allardyce:

"We have had some fantastic results this season and one disappointing game (the 4-0 FA Cup loss to West Brom last week).

"It's not the cup we are talking about now it's the Premier League and we have had an indifferent results spell at minute, but performances - especially against Manchester United, where we should have got three points - have been good.

"We have to challenge ourselves at Tottenham and be more clinical in front of goal. That is what we did here last season and we defended well."

  248. How they stand

  250. We continue

Wow. That was an absolutely incredible rant from Jose Mourinho. There may be more to come. If so, we will bring you the best quotes. But now, there is a game on very soon.

  251. 'Mourinho complains have lost impact'

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

    MOTD2 Extra

Oliver Kay, chief football correspondent for The Times: "I thought Nemanja Matic's reaction was a red card reaction, there is no debate about that and there wasn't anything the referee could do. I do think there were poor decisions yesterday, but when Jose Mourinho reels off all his injustices about referees, I feel like it has lost its impact because he is doing it every time Chelsea lose."

  252. 'The referees are not doing well'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "The referees are trying, of course they are trying, but they are not doing well. It is not fair. That is not my opinion, that is in the eyes of everyone.

"How would I improve it? If the referee cannot see a penalty three metres in front of him, some official in front of a screen cannot miss it. If we want to protect the integrity and the honesty of referees. If we believe that mistakes - and I believe - are because of the unpredictability of the game then technology can help. If I was a referee I would welcome it.

"I spoke to the referee after the game, Mr Atkinson told me he didn't have the chance to see on TV the incidents. I asked him if he had any contact with people from outside of the ground, he said he had no feedback at all. He said that he didn't see any of the four incidents. He saw no reason for a penalty or a card in any of the actions."

  253. "Matic's reaction was natural"

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson

Match od the Day 2 Extra

"It was a natural reaction from Nemanja Matic. Forget about breaking his leg, that challenge could have been the end of his career, and that is obviously what was going through his mind. Also, for the referee not to have seen a tackle like that, it's actually frightening for the game."

  254. 'This is a criminal tackle'

More from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports, who goes back to the incident where Nemanja Matic was sent off after being the victim of a "criminal tackle" from Burnley's Ashley Barnes on Saturday.

"Football is about emotions and clearly Nemanja Matic had a reason to lose his emotions," says Mourinho. "What are the consequences of his push, nothing. The consequence for Matic from the tackle? It could be the end of his career. A criminal tackle.

"If you call Diego Costa's actions against Liverpool a crime, the minimum you have to say is this is a criminal tackle. As an institution Sky did not apologise to Chelsea, to Costa, or to me.

"Diego Costa has a three-match ban. Matic will probably get three. You tell me how many games you think they deserve?"

  255. 'I'm not attacking the honesty of anyone'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "I am not attacking the honesty, the dignity of anyone. I am not trying to - and in this country you love this sentence - 'bring the game into disrepute.' I am trying to be honest.

"If we are in a normal situation when decision sometimes go for us, sometimes go against us, we could be five points clear, we could be 12. It could be 12 points."

  256. 'Matic reaction the right one'

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

    Former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas

Match of the Day 2 Extra

"Nemanja Matic's reaction was correct. Challenges like that are cowardly - Ashley Barnes could have broken his leg. Matic's foot is planted and Barnes catches him in the mid-section of his shin. I fully understand the reaction, it could have ended his career. When someone catches you that high up you get angry, you see the red mist."

  257. Costa crimes?

Jose Mourinho is unhappy at what he perceives as unfair treatment after Sky Sports used the word 'crimes' to describe some of the controversial moments in Diego Costa's career. The striker got a three-game ban for stamping on Liverpool's Emre Can and only returned to Premier League action on Saturday.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "When I finished the game against Liverpool I went to the dressing room and I was reading non-stop about Diego Costa's crimes. I would like to know how do you, Sky Sports, describe the actions of a Burnley player yesterday? My English is not good enough to find an adjective to qualify. I don't find a word to describe.

"The challenge from Ashley Barnes on Nemanja Matic can be the end of a career. I cannot find an adjective to describe it. It is end of career. Nemanja Matic is a very lucky guy. Another club would have the power to appeal Matic's red card."

  258. 'Week after week decisions go against us'

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "The best players in the world make mistakes. This gentleman [Martin Atkinson] is one of the top referees in European football, he can also make mistakes. He clearly made four important mistakes yesterday. He is like the lawyer who is consistent because he lost 15 of 15 cases. You don't want that lawyer.

    Martin Atkinson

"The Diego Costa penalty story started on day one of the season. He should have had a penalty against Burnley in the first game of the season and he got booked for a dive. We have this history since day one. I remember one decision all season that went our way and that was a doubtful one.

"I am risking my place in the dugout for the [League Cup] final by having this discussion. I cannot go too far. But the reality is that week after week we are having these decisions [against us]. Football is football, but I think it is too much. I think my players don't deserve that. Yesterday I was calm in the press conference but my players are not getting the respect they deserve."

  259. Mourinho on referee decisions

"I said clearly that at half-time Burnley should be playing with 10 men and Chelsea should have had two penalties, normally we would win 3-0. The reality is in the end we have 10 men and we lost two points.

On the handball incident: "The referee's opinion is wrong. The arms stopped the ball from hitting the target. There is no space for interpretation. He is far away, he is not one metre. He is quite far, the ball hits the target if it doesn't hit his hand.

"Players should be taught to keep their balance in different situations in the box, by putting their hands behind the body. This is a penalty. You can say what you want, for me this is a penalty everywhere."

  260. Mourinho on Burnley incidents

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "What can I say that everybody doesn't know? There are some incidents in matches where there is space for discussion and different opinions and explanations. You have a point of view, I have a point of view, but there are actions when there is clearly only one point of view. These four incidents are clear for everyone."

Should managers be fined by the FA? "It is what it is. If you say it in a way when you go over the line in your comments it is understandable but if you just watch it is obvious without attacking the integrity of people, it shouldn't be a problem."

    Jose Mourinho
  261. Coming up on BBC TV

MOTD2 Extra is online and on BBC One from the earlier time of 11:30 GMT this morning.

Host Mark Chapman is joined by former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson, former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas and Oliver Kay, chief football correspondent for The Times.

  262. Mourinho on Paris Metro incident

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is a guest on Goals On Sunday on Sky Sports. We will be also bringing you the best of his quotes, in what is likely to be a lively interview.

On the incident on the Paris Metro: "Our reaction couldn't be better. Chelsea's reaction as a club was fantastic, we could not do more than we did. Should I be ashamed of what two or three persons did? Are these persons representing my club? Is Chelsea this? But I am very sorry to be connected to this.

"I don't know if the gentleman has accepted our invitation to come and see a game."

  263. Today's newspapers

    The Independent On Sunday

    Independent On Sunday

The Independent on Sunday reports there has been another racism incident involving Chelsea supporters.

The club have already banned a number of supporters after they were filmed blocking a black man from getting on a train in Paris before their Champions League game against Paris St-Germain.

  264. 'Arsenal set for top four'

    Crystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal

    Match of the Day

Arsenal won for the eighth time in nine matches as they held on to beat Crystal Palace 2-1, despite a late scare at Selhurst Park. Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud scored for Arsenal, before Eagles striker Glenn Murray scored in the fourth minute of injury-time and then hit the post a minute later.

    Arsenal players

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer: "It was a great game. Palace pushed Arsenal all the way, right to the end. But Arsenal are on a good run. I think they'll finish in the top four."

  265. 'Barton has let his team down'

    Hull City 2-1 QPR

    Match of the Day

QPR midfielder Joey Barton was again in the news, as he was sent off in his side's 2-1 defeat at Hull. Steve Bruce's side scored a last-minute winner through Dame N'Doye.

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer: "Joey Barton's red card was a very costly moment - I totally understand that he has gone in to protect his young team-mate but pushing Alex Bruce away is stupid and what he did [making contact with Tom Huddlestone] has cost his team-mates - and not just today but he has cost them for the next three games as well.

"But it was a massive, massive win for Hull."

BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage: "Barton has come into the game on the back of seven straight yellow cards so he has been playing on the edge - and what he has done against Hull is stupid."

    Sergio Aguero

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero: "A great game to get closer to the top and prepare for the Champions League game with the highest spirits. C'mon, City!"

City midfielder Samir Nasri: "Great day, great win. Perfect way to prepare Barcelona."

  269. 'Newcastle were pathetic'

    Man City 5-0 Newcastle

    Match of the Day

    Newcastle players

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer: "I can just imagine the Newcastle team talk before the game: 'Right lads, this team have got Barcelona on Tuesday. Let's just keep it tight for the first 10 or 15 minutes. Let's get in among them, put one or two tackles in and see if they fancy it.

"But after 20 or 30 seconds, that was out of the window. Newcastle just didn't get near them. They didn't fancy it. And to be honest, they were pathetic. It was embarrassing, it really was, from the first minute to the last.

"It was just far, far too easy for City. These are top players. You cannot give them time on the ball like this. City show so much hunger to get the ball back, even when they're 3-0 up. I never saw that once from Newcastle. It was pathetic."

  270. 'Toure is City's key player'

    Man City 5-0 Newcastle

    Match of the Day

Manchester City crushed Newcastle 5-0 at Etihad Stadium. Sergio Aguero scored a penalty inside the first minute, before goals from Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko and two from David Silva completed the rout.

    Yaya Toure and Wilfried Bony

BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage: "City only won one game out of five without Yaya Toure. Edin Dzeko said after the game that David Silva is possibly the best player in the Premier League. But I think Toure is City's most important.

"With him, they're a far, far better team. He was magnificent, showing great strength under pressure to hold people off. He glues the team together. He can receive the ball in tight areas, he can play perfectly weighted passes. He gets the ball and wants it all the time. Yaya Toure is brilliant - it's great to have him back."

    Swansea 2-1 Manchester United

    Ander Herrera

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera: "Disappointed with the loss that we didn't deserve. All we can do is get ourselves up and focus on next game."

    Swansea 2-1 Manchester United

    Swansea players

Swansea manager Garry Monk, on Twitter: "Great to make new chapters in our club's history. The whole squad deserve big credit for their hard work this week."

  274. 'Not good enough from United'

    Swansea 2-1 Manchester United

    Match of the Day

Manchester United fell to a 2-1 defeat at Swansea City. United, who lost to the Swans at Old Trafford by the same score in Louis van Gaal's first game in charge in August, went ahead through Ander Herrera's goal, before efforts from Ki Sung-yueng and Bafetimbi Gomis gave Swansea the victory.

    Garry Monk

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer: "Swansea play some good football and I think manager Garry Monk is doing a wonderful job. The team have good spirit and they have been inside the top 10 all season. They are very well organised."

BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage: "Defensively again, whether playing four or five at the back, Manchester United have a decent record but to watch them they seem all over the place at times. And again they were extremely poor against a good Swansea team. They have been poor from set pieces all season and have not been good enough away from home in the Premier League.

"Angel Di Maria for me has not been good enough. He played on the left-hand side of a three at Swansea - arguably his best position - but he was getting knocked off the ball too easily for a player who cost £59m.

"Yes United are fourth in the league but long ball from United? Unacceptable and not good enough."

  275. 'Burnley thoroughly deserved the draw'

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

    Match of the Day

Let's not forget about Burnley, who claimed an excellent point at Chelsea in their battle to stay in the Premier League.

    Burnley players

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer: "Burnley did incredibly well. Yes, Chelsea had a lot of possession and they could have won it with the chances they had, but you've got to give credit to Burnley for the way they kept going. Thibaut Courtois was fantastic for Chelsea in the last few minutes.

"Jose Mourinho wanted to bring on Gary Cahill just before Burnley equalised, but he didn't do it because they were defending a corner, and they've been punished. It was a brilliant header by Ben Mee. Chelsea don't often concede from corners.

"Burnley gave as good as they got and they thoroughly deserved the draw."

  277. 'It's a leg breaker'

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

    Match of the Day

    Nemanja Matic

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer on Nemanja Matic's 69th-minute sending off for retaliating over an Ashley Barnes tackle: "This is an horrific tackle by Ashley Barnes, it really is. It's dangerous, it's naughty, it's a terrible tackle. I understand that reaction from Nemanja Matic. It's not right, but I understand it, because Ashley Barnes could easily have broken his leg there. It's a terrible tackle, and Matic, for that, is going to miss the League Cup final next week. Barnes doesn't even get a yellow card."

BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage: "Ashley Barnes should have been booked in the first half, and the challenge on Matic should have been a straight red. Matic is lucky that he's not out for six, seven, eight months. Mourinho's right today. Chelsea have been hard done by."

  278. Chelsea denied a penalty - part 2

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

    Match of the Day

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer on Chelsea's 44th-minute penalty appeal, when Jason Shackell seemed to foul Diego Costa: "Jason Shackell loses the ball and tries to make up for his error, but he catches Diego Costa and shoves him. He gets his legs caught up with Costa's. You can tell by Costa's reaction, by the way he slams the turf with his fists, what he thinks about it. It should be a penalty."

    Diego Costa

BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage: "Martin Atkinson was in a great position once again, and he wasn't having it. Mourinho's right. He can laugh, because his team have been hard done by."

  279. Chelsea denied a penalty - part 1

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

    Match of the Day

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer on Chelsea's 33rd-minute appeal for a penalty after Michael Kightly appeared to handle: "This is a blatant handball by Michael Kightly. Martin Atkinson is about 10 yards away and Ivanovic is seven or eight yards away. Kightly turns his back and sticks his arm out. That has to be a penalty. It's not as if he's gone to block it with his arms down. His arm's right out there. It has to be handball."

"He's made himself bigger. His arm is in an unnatural position, to make himself bigger, to save a shot that's on target, so that is a penalty."

  280. Barnes escaped early yellow

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

    Match of the Day

    Ashley Barnes

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer on Ashley Barnes' 30th-minute foul on Branislav Ivanovic: "I think referee Martin Atkinson had a terrible game. Ashley Barnes goes up for the header with Ivanovic, he leads with his foot, and he's very fortunate there. He kicks out, with studs into the back of Ivanovic's hamstring, and that should be a yellow card."

BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage: "That's a definite yellow card there. Ivanovic's reaction is quite poor, with the way he rolls over and then gets up, but I agree - that's a yellow card."

  281. Post update

Well Mourinho couldn't, or didn't want to, comment, but luckily our Match of the Day pundits did.

  282. Post update

    Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

Chelsea had Nemanja Matic sent off as the Premier League leaders were held to a 1-1 home draw by Burnley.

Branislav Ivanovic put Jose Mourinho's side ahead and it looked like being a routine win. But then, after they had two penalty shouts rejected, the hosts went down to 10 men as Nemanja Matic charged at Burnley's Ashley Barnes after his dangerous challenge.

Needless to say, Burnley equalised through Ben Mee late on, leaving Mourinho, not for the first time this season, absolutely livid.

Referring to notes in his post-match BBC interview, Mourinho said: "There are four moments of the game where you can write the story. Minutes 30, 33, 43 and 69. Don't ask me more questions. I can't go through the incidents. I am punished when I refer to them."

  283. So, what happened
