"You feel Leicester just needed the win to keep them in touch with those around them in the table but it was a really good performance. There were chances for Romelu Lukaku as well so probably 2-2 is a fair result but they were so close to that elusive win that will be the springboard for them to stay up."

Shabbir, Harrow: Everton and Spurs both drop points after playing in Europe. As a Liverpool fan, I am very worried.

    Noel

Former Oasis guitarist and rock n'roll star Noel Gallagher is a guest on Match of the Day 2 this evening and as a little taster, he#s picked his band of footballers.

George Best on vocals: "In any band, you want a good-looking lad as the singer."

Zinedine Zidane on lead guitar: "The lead guitarist has got to be a wizard."

Patrick Vieira on bass: "The bass player has got to be solid and reliable - an immovable rock."

Mario Balotelli on drums: " You have got to have a headcase on the drums and Mario could also join in with a rap every now and again.

    "He's like a modern-day rock star anyway."

Brilliant. Read more from Noel and our own Chris Bevan here.

The rain continues to lash down in Southampton, which could suit both sides' passing game. I'd like to see a few early full-body slide tackles please. Stuart Pearce style.

It finished all square with another late goal, that's two 2-2 draws so far today. Another one at St Mary's?

  6. "Mad to boo Lallana"published at 15:55 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2015

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge
BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's Stadium

"I think Adam Lallana will get a good reception today. Only the crazy fans will give him stick. When you think about how well he did at this football club, I don't think you can give him anything other than the credit he deserves. He was at Southampton since he was 14. It was a natural progression for him to move on."

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana, speaking earlier this week about his move away from Southampton this summer. "To be honest I'm not on social media and I don't read much of the press. But I do realise the way I left, it left a sour taste in a few people's mouths. But I have read so much false stuff in the media since that it was sad the way it all happened.

"Rickie Lambert, who is one of my best mates, left to join the same club, and he had a completely different reaction. That made it a bit more difficult too. I hope Saints fans appreciate the time we had at the club together. If I do get the boos I will take that as they miss me. I miss them and I miss playing there, I knew I was going to when I left. I've got way too much respect to celebrate if I was to score."

Romelu Lukaku has missed some chances today but he converts one when it matters, a fine flying header at the Gwladys End!

Hang on - it's been chalked off and given as an OG from Matty Upson. The ball went in off the defender.

Shaun Warnock is a worried man. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League matches, winning six, but this could be a real test.

Shaun Warnock, Ayrshire: Massive gamble by Brendan Rodgers to rest Daniel Sturridge. Biggest game of the season, would he not have been better resting him on Thursday? Time will tell but he better hope he gets a result.

Ashwin, Cambridge: That starting XI from Brendan Rodgers really worries me, only two established defenders (one of whom has been shocking this season) and no established strikers. Today will decide whether he is a tactical genius or an oaf.

James Gallacher: Jose Mourinho deserves an Oscar for best editing (minutes 30, 33, 43 and 69).

Mark Lawson: Vinny Jones in...... No, no that wouldn't work.

Kieran Blake: Jonjo Shelvey staring as the new Voldemort in Harry Potter.

"The two substitutions Nigel Pearson made after Leicester went behind have played a massive part in this. Jamie Vardy has had a hand in both goals. It's a good job they kept the manager eh?"

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman: "I didn't expect to have more points than Liverpool at this stage of the season.

"They had to play on Thursday and they have had to travel, so maybe that gives us the advantage. We shall see."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "Mamadou Sakho has an injury and will need a scan so Dejan Lovren comes in. Daniel Sturridge, we are trying to protect him. He is still looking for fitness and this would have been a third game in a week.

"Lovren and Adam Lallana served this club with great distinction, Adam in particular. He loved it here and has a great respect for the club so they will both deal with it fine. The team is playing well, we wanted to finish in the top four and win a trophy and it's up to me to juggle that."

On-loan Benfica midfielder Filip Djuricic makes his first Southampton start, one of three changes to the side who draw with West Ham last time out. Left-back Matty Targett returns to action after recovering from the head injury suffered at QPR two weeks ago, and so Maya Yoshida moves back to central defence. James Ward-Prowse replaces Harrison Reed in midfield.

Raheem Sterling returns to Liverpool's starting line-up - having fully recovered from a recent foot injury - with Daniel Sturridge dropping to the bench. Former Southampton centre-back Dejan Lovren replaces Mamadou Sakho, who has a hip problem, while Lazar Markovic comes in at left-wing back for Alberto Moreno.

Southampton XI: Forster; Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Targett; Wanyama, Davis, Ward-Prowse; Djuricic, Pelle, Elia.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet; Can, Skrtel, Lovren; Ibe, Henderson, Allen, Markovic; Lallana, Coutinho, Sterling,

Absolutely genius from Nigel Pearson. He has only just come on, but David Nugent has made it level. He is there to pounce after Tim Howard can only palm the ball into the one-time England striker's path, and Nugent nets from eight yards out.

"A lot was made of Adam Lallana leaving Southampton, he had spent all of his football career here and it was slightly acrimonious the way his move panned out. He is back to his old stomping ground today and has the chance to show everybody that he is a good player and deserves to be in this Liverpool side."
