Ghana, in all white, start strongly and force a nervy moment out of Felipe Ovono in the Equatorial Guinea goal as he races out to punch away Mubarak Wakaso's free-kick. The clearance lacks conviction and could have gone anywhere, but luckily for the hosts they are able to get to the loose ball before Ghana.

"I was concerned for the match because this place was less than half full earlier, but the only empty seats are the ones at the back."

The referee checks everyone is where they should be, wise given Ivory Coast's Serge Aurier wandered out almost two minutes after the start of the second half in yesterday's semi-final, and we are under way.

"What a reception for the Equatorial Guinea national anthem."

Meanwhile, the Equatorial Guinea national anthem is greeted by huge cheers from the home fans, who are enthusiastically clapping massive inflatable hands. Lot's of noise in the Estadio de Malabo, making for a cracking atmosphere.

Out the two teams stroll on to the pitch before lining up for the national anthems. Plenty of bright colours in the Ghana end of the stadium, as well comedy oversized sunglasses. Not long until kick-off.

The two teams are lined up in the tunnel waiting to head out, Ghana goalkeeper Brimah Razak is clutching a spiderman figure, possibly for luck.

"The man to come into the Ghana team is striker Jordan Ayew. Coach Avram Grant said 'the fans must respect him' because he's not been all that popular so far."

Ghana assistant manager Maxwell Konadu: "At this stage we're not thinking about cups. This is very, very important. At this stage we're at right now we just have to think about Equatorial Guinea.

"I have had many people calling me, talking about the title, saying that it was already won and that Ghana were champions. I told them that we can't think about that before the final is played. My boss [Avram Grant] has told me we don't think about cups now."

"It will be difficult to win the Cup of Nations, but I pray to still win it," says Argentine coach Esteban Becker, who led Equatorial Guinea to the 2012 African women's title.

"We like the challenge, we are hungry to win. We are a young team, a team for the future. We have at least 10 top young players, but we want to take it one step at a time."

The Estadio de Malabo is filling up nicely as the players complete their pre-match warm-ups. Equatorial Guinea are not particularly chuffed to be playing there, though, having performed so well in Bata, where they have not lost an international game.

In contrast, they have bad memories of playing in Malabo, having been thumped 3-0 by the Ivory Coast there three years ago in the quarter-finals.

Will they make amends against Ghana tonight?

If the host nation's passage to the semi-final was controversial, the Black Stars' qualification was most convincing as they dumped out Guinea 3-0 in the quarter-final.

Four-time winners Ghana lost their opening-match 2-1 to Senegal but have improved since then, beating Algeria, South Africa and Guinea.

They are, perhaps unsurprisingly, heavy favourites to win tonight.

One man who will be hoping to keep a relatively low profile tonight is Eric Otogo. The Gabon official is the referee for this game and will be in the spotlight after controversial scenes marred Equatorial Guinea's last-eight tie with Tunisia.

A controversial penalty decision in the dying minutes by Mauritian referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn turned the tide in favour of Equatorial Guinea against Tunisia. Javier Balboa converted the penalty and scored again in extra-time to give the host nation a shock 2-1 victory.

Seechurn had to be protected by riot police at full-time as he was chased down the tunnel by some fuming Tunisia players.

Let's hope for no such shenanigans this time, eh?

How big is this game in Ghana? Big. Like, buy electricity from a neighbouring country big.

To ensure no-one's televisions cut out during the game, Ghana has reportedly bought 80 megawatts of power, external from Ivory Coast to ensure constant power throughout the evening.

Wouldn't it be just their luck if the floodlights went out in the stadium instead...

Ghana very kindly named their starting XI hours before kick-off, and the big news for them is that captain Asamoah Gyan is out after suffering an abdominal injury late in the quarter-final. As a result Jordan Ayew partners Kwesi Appiah, who plays for Cambridge United, in attack.

Striker Javier Balboa, who scored twice to see off Tunisia in their quarter-final, starts for Equatorial Guinea.

Ghana starting XI: Brimah, Afful, Rahman, Mensah, Boye, Wakaso, Acquah, Ayew, Atsu, Ayew, Appiah.

Equatorial Guinea starting XI: Ovono, Vazquez Evuy, Mbele, Da Gracia Gomes, Belima, Senobua, Ellong, Zarandona Esono, Balboa, Nsue Lopez, Edu.
