So are Equatorial Guinea Denmark 1992 in disguise? Coach Esteban Becker thinks so.

Denmark received the call to compete in that year's European Championship after Yugoslavia were barred because of the developing Balkan crisis.

"I have shown my players a video - when there was the war in the Balkans in the early 1990s, and they played the European Championship," says Becker. "Denmark weren't originally in the competition - they were on holiday - but after replacing Yugoslavia, they finished champions of Europe.

"A month ago, we were on holiday and now we're here - that's why I say we're like Denmark in 1992."

Hello and welcome to our coverage of the second Africa Cup of Nations semi-final.

We are right at the business end of the tournament, with Ivory Coast awaiting one of hosts Equatorial Guinea or Ghana in Sunday's final.

Ghana are in familiar territory, having made it to this stage for the fifth time in a row, but they have only reached the final once in this run. Equatorial Guinea, meanwhile, are in new territory with this being their first semi-final in only their second-ever Nations appearance.

Can the new kids on the block upset the odds and beat the semi-final stalwarts?

  5. Doing a Denmark?published at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2015

"I should have put in a new kitchen but then we were called away to play in Sweden."

Eleven days before the start of Euro 1992, Denmark coach Richard Moller Nielsen was cracking on with his summer chores after the Danish national team had failed to qualify for the tournament.

But kitchen decorating was put on hold as Denmark were given a last-minute invitation to replace Yugoslavia and join Europe's elite, paving the way for them to become unlikely champions of Europe.

The similarities between Denmark's situation and Equatorial Guinea's - who were called up as last-minute hosts for this year's Africa Cup of Nations - are striking.

Could they be about to 'do' a Denmark?
