So that's it for the League Two play-off final. It took some time to get going, but what a conclusion we ended up with.

Huge commiserations to Wycombe Wanderers, and congratulations to Southend United.

We're back at 17:00 BST tomorrow with BBC Radio 5 live and text commentary of Preston v Swindon in the League One final at Wembley. And there's the small matter of the final day of the Premier League, too.

Thanks for your company this evening.

Well, they left it late, but better late than never for Southend.

After a goalless first 90 minutes, Dan Bentley's own goal put Wycombe within touching distance of the third tier.

But Joe Pigott's 122nd-minute equaliser took the game to penalties and, after 16 spot-kicks, it was Southend who prevailed 7-6 to win promotion.

The Shrimpers initially trailed in the shootout but Bentley ended up being the hero, keeping out efforts from Matt Bloomfield and, decisively, Sam Wood in sudden death.

More from Southend boss Phil Brown: "The young lads and the old lads showed a lot of character to win the game. To get the equaliser in the 122nd minute shows what we're about.

"We've got to dust ourselves down in the summer and come back in League One. That's what we set out to achieve at the start of the season and that's what we've done today."

More from Southend manager Phil Brown: "Myself and Gareth (Ainsworth) made a pact when the penalties started because a lot of bad things go on in football. We both said that we wouldn't go overboard, whoever wins it. It's in the lap of the gods, and it was."

"The Southend players are, as you'd expect, in pretty high spirits. They are greeted by cheers as they walk back down the Wembley steps from the Southend fans, who have largely stayed behind to soak up this moment in the club's history."

I wonder if those Southend fans that were dashing back down Wembley Way at the end of extra time managed to get back inside the stadium for the penalties?

There are a few more steps than there used to be at the old Wembley to get up to the balcony where they will collect the trophy. There are 107 steps these days, and the Southend squad will float up each one. Promotion is theirs.
