Simon, Berkshire: 1997 and David Hopkin's strike in the last minute of extra time for Palace was sensational. Made up for losing in the last minute in 1996 when Claridge's shin sent Leicester up instead.

Wycombe striker Paul Hayes is denied, correctly, by the offside flag, but at least Wanderers are offering a bit more offensively now.

"It took the Southend fans a very long time to realise that goal was disallowed. They were still celebrating to my right for a good 20 seconds. Wycombe's fans gleefully notified them they were wrong, of course."

Wycombe captain Paul Hayes goes into the book for a trip on Stephen McLaughlin.

Southend striker Barry Corr powerfully heads the resulting free-kick into the net, but it's disallowed by the referee for a push by Cian Bolger. Good decision.

Speculative from Cian Bolger. And not very good, either. The Southend defender sees his name in lights as he shapes to volley from the angle of the penalty area. Unfortunately, fate decides the ball should fly miles over the bar.

Wycombe are having a bit of possession but the front three of Hogan Ephraim, Paul Hayes and Aaron Holloway aren't seeing much of the ball in decent attacking areas.

In contrast, Southend have looked fairly dangerous when they've got forward and they haven't been shy to get the ball into the box from set-pieces.

"Every time young Wycombe goalkeeper Alex Lynch touches the ball, Wanderers fans show him their support. They know how important his third senior start in professional football is."

Another Southend corner and another yellow shirt wins the first header, but centre-back Cian Bolger heads wide from 10 yards. Southend just edging the early stages.

Both sides are in good form heading into this play-off final and only missed out on automatic promotion on the final day of the regular League Two season.

Here's one for you, stat fans - this is the third season that the two highest-placed teams in each division have made the play-off final. The others were 1997-98 & 1999-2000.

Three corners in quick succession for Southend, who have sent the big boys up from the back. Wycombe goalkeeper Alex Lynch deals with the first two by punching away from danger, and Lynch makes a smart save to deny striker Barry Corr's header from the third.

Another excellent Wycombe cross, this time from experienced striker Paul Hayes, forces Southend defender Cian Bolger into a clearing header. At the other end, Chairboys centre-back Alfie Mawson puts in a good challenge to deny Southend front man Barry Corr an effort at goal.

No real saves for either goalkeeper to make thus far, with a real lack of end product from either attack, those two crosses from Wycombe's Hogan Ephraim apart.

Although he's one of the few managers who could probably still perform to a decent level in the Football League, it's purely a watching brief for Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth at Wembley today.

And he's already been in the action, making an early substitution because of the unfortunate injury to Sam Saunders.

How will Wycombe respond to that early change? Very well, it seems. A couple of teasing crosses from winger Hogan Ephraim on the left cause the Southend defence all sorts of problems. Somehow, they scramble both clear.

"Saunders tried to get up and he can't even put a leg down. He can't put any weight on it at all. That's a real sickener for the boy."

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 17:36 British Summer Time 23 May 2015

Well, that's quite incredible. Sam Saunders' play-off final is over after about five seconds because of injury and he looks absolutely distraught. Long-serving midfielder Matt Bloomfield is on to replace Saunders.

Straight from the kick-off, Wycombe's Sam Saunders takes a whack on the calf from Will Atkinson and requires treatment.

We don't need any more injuries - we've already got Southend midfielder Michael Timlin sporting a skull cap after his nasty head clash in the semi-final against Stevenage.

We're under way at Wembley! Southend United and Wycombe Wanderers just one win away from a place in League One next season.

"For a League Two play-off final, the noise in Wembley as the teams walked out was mightily impressive.

"Southend fans raised their yellow scarves, while Wycombe fans waved light and dark blue cards representing their team's colours. Also, the Wembley flamethrowers are quite something."

The two sides are lined up and the two captains are introducing their teams to the presentation party. Then the national anthem. The formalities are almost over with.
