Megan Lee: They've worked and worked, kept their patience and now it's paid off! 2-0, come on England.

Mr W: I hope the male England football team are watching this - England Women playing brilliantly at the World Cup now.

  2. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 22:41 British Summer Time 13 June 2015

England's final change of the game as Lucy Bronze is replaced by Alex Scott for the final five minutes.

Unless something spectacular happens, England are on course for the three points and a move up to second in the group.

"We were crediting Mark Sampson for his tactical changes. That is a monumental moment for Karen Carney who has struggled with injuries. England can finally breathe a sigh of relief."

I saw a few tweets questioning Mark Sampson's tactics at the World Cup so far, but hats off to his substitutions in this game. Inspired.

England's second goal is substitute to substitute as the excellent Alex Greenwood whips in a cross for Karen Carney, who rises to nod in from close range.

Fran Kirby is tormenting the Mexico defence. First, she is a whisker away from connecting with a cross, before she cuts inside of Kenti Robles and smacks a powerful effort at an increasingly under siege Cecilia Santiago in the Mexico goal.

Ten minutes to go and, at the moment, England are in control.

One-way traffic in the last five minutes. Keep the ball in the Mexico half and England could be celebrating in just over 10 minutes.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 22:34 British Summer Time 13 June 2015

With England looking dangerous now, Mexico boss Leonardo Cuellar makes his second change of the game as forward Maria Sanchez comes on for tiring striker Renae Cuellar.

"Massive relief for England as Fran Kirby marks her first World Cup start with a goal. It's a great story after the Reading striker quit football four years ago after depression following the death of her mother. She plays in the second tier of English football but she has been one of England's best players."

Pete Cooper: Cracking goal from Kirby. Great shot of her poking the ball home with 3 Mexican players and keeper diving in.

Jack Everitt: Karen Carney is absolute class, England look like a completely different team with her on the pitch.

England are bubbling with confidence now. They quickly go close to a second as Toni Duggan tries to bring a ball into the box under control, she runs into Eni Aluko, who takes control of the situation, swinging a boot at the bouncing ball and sending a rasping effort just over.

"What a relief. Absolutely fantastic, England deserve to go ahead. The fox in the box Fran Kirby toe pokes it home, a lovely finish. So many times at domestic level we have seen Kirby doing that."

The breakthrough! The introduction of Karen Carney does indeed have a positive impact. She plays the ball to Toni Duggan on the edge of the area, Duggan loses possession but the loose ball bounces through to Fran Kirby who, composed, picks off a couple of defenders before calmly poking the ball in off the far post.

Mark Sampson sits back in his seat, puffing out his cheeks. What a relief.

Huge cheer for the introduction of Karen Carney. Can she add that bit of bite England have, by and large, been lacking in the final third?

  15. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 22:23 British Summer Time 13 June 2015

Oh my word, this is heart in mouth stuff! Mexico have a corner, which Monica Ocampo takes. Her curled effort beats Karen Bardsley and smacks against the crossbar, with the follow up sent just over.

Mark Sampson responds by sending on winger Karen Carney for Jill Scott.

  16. YELLOW CARDpublished at 22:19 British Summer Time 13 June 2015

One hour in and we have our first booking of the game, Alina Garciamendez slides in on Lucy Bronze, missing the ball completely and catching the feet of the England full-back. Yellow card.

End-to-end now as Mexico get forward for their first attack in this half, Kenti Robles curling a shot between two defenders and towards the far corner but Karen Bardsley is wise to the effort and holds the ball.

This is tense stuff for England. Score and they are in a very strong position to progress to the last-16. If Mexico score, though, and England lose, then it will look very bleak indeed.

"England are taking time to find their rhythm again but Alex Greenwood has added a bit more fire to their left side and takes a wicked set-piece. Mark Sampson is looking a lot more positive after those two Eniola Aluko chances."

This is better by Alex Greenwood though!

England win a free-kick on the right side of the Mexico area, Greenwood curls it towards the far post but Steph Houghton can't get enough on her header to direct it goalwards.

Moments later, Greenwood drills a low ball from the left to the feet of Eni Aluko who, in the middle of the area, swivels and fizzes a drive at goal that Cecilia Santiago manages to bat away. Just.

"England just need to up the tempo a little bit and retain possession. When they get the ball, they need to play simple and keep it as much as they can."
