England have really come to life now and Fara Williams, who scored against Mexico in the 2011 World Cup, fancies a crack from all of 35 yards. It is not far off, you know, whizzing just over the bar.

England need to make the most of this momentum.

"I don't think it was penalty - it would have been harsh. But I'd have appealed if I was playing!"

Much better from England as the Mexico defence survives a big scare. First, Fran Kirby scuffs a low effort that deflects off the knee of a Mexican defender, Toni Duggan tries an overhead kick and her shot strikes the hand of a defender. The England fans want a penalty, nothing given, but England keep the attack a live as, moments later, Kirby shoots straight at the keeper. A comfortable save in the end, but Kirby is growing into this game.

Ian: Still playing dangerous and silly passes in defence. Can see Mexico scoring first.

Charlyn Corral has some tricky feet and the Mexico forward tries her best to befuddle her marker Steph Houghton with some fancy footwork. It all looks very good, but she ruins it by launching a shot well wide.

"Better from England. Getting Lucy Bronze in advanced positions will definitely help their cause. Mexico starting to lose control of midfield."

"Excellent move from England. That's what they need to do - move the ball quicker. Fran Kirby just tried to curl the ball and in the end that was a good save. It was a promising move. If England can get forward quickly in numbers they can get at Mexico on the counter attack."

Finally Eni Aluko does have support in attack as England fashion their best chance of the game so far!

Lucy Bronze scampers forward from her right back position and gets into the box before pulling the ball back to Fran Kirby, who is unmarked in the middle of the area, but she gets the ball stuck under her feet and can only scuff a shot straight at Cecilia Santiago in the Mexico goal. Better, though.

"Mark Sampson is bellowing instructions to his team and giving them plenty of encouragement. England just need to concentrate on stringing a few passes together. Where have I heard that before?"

So England are playing three up top, right?

Make what you will of this graphic showing their players' average position on the pitch so far and, in particular, Eni Aluko (number nine):

And Fran Kirby (number 22) seems very deep for a forward...

Pete Cooper: I said it during England's last game, but I really don't think the artificial pitch is helping either team.

Andrew Thompson: England v Mexico is so slow, so many bad passes, if this is the artificial pitches.... they have no place in the beautiful game

Mexico are quick to get numbers back when England attack, with nine outfield players in or around their box. Eniola Aluko is doing a valiant job of trying to stretch their defence, though, this time switching over to the left flank where she manages to get a cross in, but it is too close to the Mexico keeper.

Charlyn Corral hooks a shot over from the edge of the area as Mexico come forward for a second time in this game. England keeper Karen Bardsley has yet to be worked, though, with both sides a bit cautious in possession at the moment.

    Sue Smith
Former England forward on BBC Three

"I've never seen England play three up top under Mark Sampson - so it is a new system for him. But most of the girls will be used to it. I'd like to see England higher. Toni Duggan right on their right-back and Fran Kirby right on their left-back. Put them under more pressure."

Eniola Aluko is playing a more advanced role than her two support strikers as Mark Sampson's side perhaps look to catch out their opponents with her pace. The tactic almost works as she bursts towards the edge of the area but is thwarted in her attempt to dance beyond her marker and the chance is gone.

First corner of the game and it goes the way of Mexico as Claire Rafferty deflects a cross behind. Mexico defender Alina Garciamendez jogs into the box and the corner is sent to the far post, Lucy Bronze heads out but only as far as Veronica Perez, who plants a shot on the roof of the net.

"Jade Moore is already adding thrust to the England midfield after replacing Katie Chapman. There are plenty of Mexico fans to my right and they're poised to give their drum a good thrashing, but it's all been a bit tentative from both teams so far."
