Richard Cohen: Nice to see Sampson go mildly more attacking. Most creative players still on bench. No Carney is bizarre unless still injured.

In total Leonardo Cuellar made 41 appearances for the Mexico national team and is one of the most experienced managers at the Women's World Cup, with the 61-year-old having been in charge of Mexico since 1998.

Quite the contrast to Mark Sampson who, at the height of his playing days played at full-back for Cardiff Corinthians and is one of the youngest, and most inexperienced, managers at this year's World Cup.

Still, it is not about the past, it is all about the here and now and what happens in today's game.

Recognise the name Leonardo Cuellar? If you do, it might be because you were around for the 1978 World Cup.

Cuellar is a former Mexico international, who played at that tournament 37 years ago, which is where the below picture is from.

Mexico drew 1-1 with Colombia in their Group F opener

Mexico may be without a win at a World Cup, but they came mighty close in their last game.

As Al says below, they drew 1-1 with Colombia but had a stoppage-time goal ruled out, which left coach Leonardo Cuellar fuming with referee Therese Neguel.

"It's not just the disappointment of a team but the anger and the disappointment of the people of Mexico when they saw time after time the replay of the goal," he said. "I got the impression we had a group of referees who were not familiar with the level of competition, with the scenario, with the type of game that they were going to face."

"Mexico make two changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Colombia in their opener last Tuesday. Jennifer Ruiz and Bianca Sierra come in to replace Christina Murillo and Valeria Miranda. Mexico played in a fluid 4-4-2 in the opener but the player to watch out for is Veronica Perez, who bossed the midfield in that first game and scored too."

Mexico XI: Santiago, Robles, Ruiz, Garcia Mendez, Sierra, V Perez, Mayor, Ocampo, Rangel, Cuellar, Corrall

So Fran Kirby makes her first start at a World Cup for England.

It caps an impressive tale of triumph over adversity for the 21-year-old, who quit football four years ago after battling depression following the death of her mother.

She returned to football two years ago with Reading, scoring 33 goals in her first season and then scored on her England debut.

Could she prove the difference today?

England's biggest problem against France was their lack of attacking threat and, judging by Mark Sampson's team selection, that is something they are determined to rectify against Mexico.

Changes in personnel and formation for England, but will it do the business, or prove disruptive?

"That was an incredible result for Colombia, who at 28th in the world have just caused the shock of the tournament by beating third-ranked France 2-0. Colombia coach Fabian Taborda was asked at the press conference yesterday whether he feared France, and he replied: 'The only thing I fear is the devil'."

As I mentioned in entry number two, Colombia have shaken things up a bit in Group F by beating world number three France 2-0.

That moves them top of the group on four points, three ahead of England. Good news or bad news for Mark Sampson's side then?

The top two in each group go through to the last-16, with the four best third-place teams from the six groups also progressing.

It won't all be decided tonight, but England have one game left after Mexico, and that is against the group leaders Colombia. They'll surely want three points on the board before that.

  15. BREAKING TEAM NEWSpublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 13 June 2015

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport in Moncton

"Three changes for England as boss Mark Sampson keeps his promise to go on the attack. Forwards Fran Kirby and Toni Duggan are in to support Eniola Aluko in a 4-3-3 system. Jade Moore replaces Katie Chapman in midfield as Alex Scott drops to the bench and Lucy Bronze moves back to her more established position of right-back."

England XI: Bardsley, Bronze, Houghton, Bassett, Rafferty, Williams, J Scott, Moore, Duggan, Aluko, Kirby.

One game down and it is crunch time for England at the Women's World Cup.

Defeat by France last time out means Mark Sampson's side prop up the group and, after Colombia produced a shock win against France a little earlier, they'll be desperate for three points against Mexico.

Has Sampson made big changes? Time to find out...

Mexico is good at producing a number of things. Tequila, for one. Tacos, definitely tacos, and sombreros.

What they are not good at - and this is good news for England - is winning games at a Women's World Cup.

Two previous appearances, six games played, no wins recorded.

Victory in the bag for England, then?
