USA came into the tournament stating they are going to win it. I love that confidence. They are deserved champions, they were the most consistent team and they just blew Japan away. They made Japan look like a very poor side today.

You could see what this meant to the US players as soon as the final whistle went. The way they started this game was absolutely phenomenal. The US were quicker and fitter and the way they moved the ball was superb - they thoroughly deserved this win.

USA become the first side to win the Women's World Cup three times.

Carli Lloyd scored the quickest goal in a final, before she netted twice more to complete her hat-trick in 16 minutes. Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath were also on the scoresheet as USA followed up their successes in 1991 and 1999.

The players have been playing on the best artificial surface and there was some debate before the tournament about the pitches but all the players have just got on with it. We've seen some great goals so I don’t think it’s had too much of an effect.

It’s amazing, what a great achievement. Playing in a World Cup final at 40 years old.

We are getting all sentimental here. As 40-year-old Christie Rampone gets to end her career in a World Cup final. She has won 307 caps. 307.

She comes off the bench to a great reception from the noisy USA fans. Alex Morgan is the player to come off.

Abby Wambach's arrival is what was needed at this stage in the game. Hopefully she can get on the scoresheet. It’s great to see her on the pitch. Not starting can have an effect on you and her penalty miss earlier in the tournament may have resulted from not starting games.

Jacqui Oatley guessed at 80 minutes for the introduction of legendary USA striker Abby Wambach, a former Women's World Player of the Year.

But Jacqui is a minute out as Wambach comes on, to an ear-splitting shriek from the USA fans, in the 79th minute.

She is set to retire from international football after this tournament. Will we see the Hollywood ending of a World Cup final goal? She has 11 minutes to do so.

Yuki Ogimi should do better but heads straight at Hope Solo from only six yards out. That may have just been a way back for the 2011 winners, who will be losing their grip on the trophy in 15 minutes time, unless we see something sensational.

Hazy atmosphere here and not just because hat-trick hero Carli Lloyd is smoking out there. I'm told there have been forest fires across Vancouver after recent hot weather, lending this huge arena the feel of a late-night party. The United States fans, who were looking pretty merry before kick-off, will certainly be celebrating if the score stays as it is.

Lindsay is calling for a Japan goal, and USA goalkeeper Hope Solo can only punch the ball to Mizuho Sakaguchi. But there is little finesse from the Japan midfielder as her volley drifts harmlessly wide.

If Japan want to do anything in this game they’ve got to score now. Last time we said that they did do so hopefully it works again.
