I think if the USA do win it, it’ll be hard to see Abby Wambach not lifting the trophy but I can see today's captain Carli Lloyd, putting up a bit of a fight.

Nearly. Japan have been awful at defending set pieces all day. And this is no different.

A corner from the right wing is deliberately headed back by a USA player to find Kelley O'Hara 18 yards out but the substitute is wasteful by shooting over the top.

Any ideas what this score is going to end up as? Nope, me neither. Chances for both sides. Firstly Rumi Utsugi volleys just wide for Japan before Alex Morgan shoots off target at the other end.

USA have got their confidence back and are not letting Japan have a moment on the ball, only at the back, it's certainly got the crowd going you can hear chants of ‘USA’.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 58 mins

    USA 5-2 Japan

Sue wants Iwabuchi to come on. And that is exactly what happens. Shinobu Ohno comes off. That is all three of the Japanese substitutions made and we are not even at the hour mark.

USA then make their first change with Megan Rapinoe coming off for Kelley O'Hara.

Japan just cannot defend from set-pieces. I have never seen a Japan side play like this. I think they have to bring Mana Iwabuchi on.

You’ve got to shut up shop when you’ve just scored a goal and USA have come straight back at them and scored again.

Well the fightback did not last long. And it comes from another set piece. An inswinging corner causes all sorts of problems for Japan goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori. Morgan Brian at the back post keeps her composure to square the ball and an unmarked Tobin Heath 10 yards out does the rest.

That ball definitely went over the line, the deflection completely wrong-footed Hope Solo. Julie Johnston has been excellent throughout this tournament, but it was just one of those things that happen when you are trying to clear the ball.

Now this is getting silly. What we needed was a comedy own goal. And that's what we have got. But Julie Johnston will not be laughing though.

A cross to the back post is inadvertently flicked into her own net off the USA defender's head.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo made a desperate attempt to keep the ball out, but the ball has gone over the line.

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 50 mins

    USA 4-1 Japan

USA are pushing for another goal. Morgan Brian is the next to look to get on the scoresheet, but is denied by a save from Ayumi Kaihori.

    USA 4-1 Japan

Japan's coach Norio Sasaki's half-time talk probably went along the lines of 'STOP CARLI LLOYD'.

If so, the players haven't really listened as Lloyd is allowed to sprint down the left wing and her cross eventually finds defender Ali Krieger, whose shot on goal is blocked by a desperate Japan defender.

After such a frantic start to the game, the interval was almost welcome. Still a sense of disbelief here after such an incredible half. Not sure I've heard so much screaming at a game, just from the shock of what is happening.

Back in those days, long, long ago when Japanese fans were hopeful, and American fans were nervous, we were asking you which England player had been their best performer of the tournament.

You have voted and the results are in.

37.9% Lucy Bronze, 18.4% Laura Bassett, 17.3% Steph Houghton, 11.1% Fara Williams, 4.8% Karen Carney, 4.3% Jill Scott, 1.0% Jade Moore. And 5.1% suggested another England player should have won.

    Thanks to everyone who voted.
