The look of wonder on Carli Lloyd's face as she missed the target with that header just said 'What is going on here?' Absolute dream land for the American.

If this was a game on Football Manager then this is when you would turn the computer off and start again, moaning that it was unrealistic. No such luck for Japan.

  5. Banishing the ghosts of World Cup pastpublished at 20 mins

    USA 4-0 Japan

Carli Lloyd was one of the players who missed a penalty in the 2011 final, which Japan won 3-1 on spot-kicks.

She scored both goals in the 2012 Olympics final win against the same opponents, but it is fair to say she has put the ghosts of four years ago behind her now. She is the first woman to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final.

The third goal shows defensive errors again from Japan and that is just so calm and cool, an excellent finish from Lauren Holiday. The fourth, it is absolutely unbelievable, I thought the USA would win this game, I didn’t think this would be so easy. There’s no doubt who is going to be the player of the tournament - Carli Lloyd. What a finish and what confidence. Japan are playing for pride now.

As soon as Japan give the ball away America are counter attacking and doing it as such pace that Japan cannot handle it. I believe that fourth goal is a mistake by the keeper bu nobody was expecting this. I'm a little speechless to be honest. Japan are in disarray.

It is nearly five. Carli Llloyd has already scored three. She should have a fourth but her header, when unmarked again, goes wide.

Take a bow Carli Lloyd. This is sensational. She picks up the ball just inside her half and launches a shot from 50 yards over the head of Japan goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori, who was well off her line. A 13-minute hat-trick. In a World Cup final

The nightmare continues for Japan. It is absolutely awful defending. Have I said that already tonight. Lauren Holiday scores with a smart volley after a poor defensive header from Azusa Iwashimizu falls invitingly to her.

How will Japan recover from that shocking start? They still have a long time to get back into this, but they have gifted their opponents a two-goal lead with two cases of shocking marking.

What can I say. Japan did not learn from the first set-piece. This is just an amazing start by the USA. They have only conceded one goal in the tournament so that Japanese have a game on their hands now.

Hard to sum up the pitch of cheers here as that second goal went in. Everyone is screaming in surprise at taking a two-goal lead within five minutes, and Carli Lloyd getting both. What a start.

That first goal was definitely a training ground move, driven on the floor and Carli Lloyd ran from deep, outside the box and just flicks it round outside of the boot, an excellent finish. For the second, it’s simple defending, why is no-one picking Lloyd up? It was easy, it’s a tap-in.

Is the final all over already? Another set-piece, and another horror show from the Japanese defence. They haven't learned their lesson from two minutes previously as a free-kick is sent to the near post, it is flicked on and tapped in by the unmarked Carli Lloyd. That is two goals in three minutes for her.

The noise is even louder now. A disastrous start for Japan as USA go ahead with a well-worked goal straight off the training ground. Megan Rapinoe's low corner from the right wing finds the on-rushing Carli Lloyd who flicks the ball with the outside of her foot past Japan goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori.

These are two real powerhouses in women’s football, two different styles of play: Japan like to keep the ball, USA are very direct and like to go forward.
