"Jack Wilshere hit as good a shot as you will ever see for his second goal, it was great technique. He looks very comfortable at this level.

"I was concerned about Phil Jones from the off but in the final third, we looked very good. I am very pleased to see Wayne Rooney score his 48th goal and get level with Gary Lineker.

"It draws to a close a long season for England and the players can now get some rest."

England haven't rubber-stamped their trip to France just yet. But with 18 points from 18 they are almost there. No other team in Europe can match 18 points yet.

It is also an unbeaten season for the first time since 1991.

"In the end, England get their win, there is relief for Roy Hodgson and his men. He will look at this defensively and how we conceded two sloppy goals.

"The guys gave everything tonight, they played at a good tempo too. It is a very good result for England and we can look forward to some difficult friendlies to come in the build-up to Euro 2016 in France."

Into three minutes of added time. Raheem Sterling is still out there, but the slo-mo replays of his left knee bending in a horrible angle don't do much for your stomach.

Can England hang on for the win?

Raheem Sterling is down holding his left knee after a challenge on the touchline. Not what he needs two minutes away from the end of his season. A lot of flex in that joint - ouch.

His agent will be a nervous man...

Andrew Smith: Rooney scores the easiest goal in history after missing a dozen of the same and suddenly he's "won the game" for us?

Mike Hall: Roy Hodgson is a lucky manager. Maybe that is enough?

Si's Insights: Now Slovenia switch off... and Rooney levels with @GaryLineker. Though it's taken him a long time to do it.

    England in exciting game shocker!

The Slovenia defence go missing, all at sea, and Wayne Rooney this time punishes them. He is level with Gary Lineker on 48 goals for his country, just one behind Sir Bobby Charlton's record.

A ball forward is met by Theo Walcott, the ball breaks into Rooney's path 15 yards out and he sweeps home side-footed.

"This goal has taken the lid off this stadium. Kevin Kampl delivers the ball full of power and it was a thunderous header. One of the centre halves should be there to deal with that, it was in the middle of the area.

"England needed to kill the game, they still had Fabian Delph flying forward. Put your foot on the ball and kill the game."
