Not the Jedi-nak you're looking for?

Alistair Magowan reports: "I'm told Stoke City are in talks with representatives for Crystal Palace midfielder Mile Jedinak but with an hour to go, it has gone quiet from the Palace end. Jonathan Walters leaving the Britannia Stadium is unlikely, and would be dependent on the Jedinak deal. Stoke want the forward to stay. And as for the rumours surrounding a surprise swoop for Swansea striker Michu, not true."

  10. De Gea's head will be 'scrambled'published at 17:04

Imagine having to go back to work and facing your colleagues after your dream move has collapsed? That’s what Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea will have to do – and it is going to be very tough for the 24-year-old, believes ex-Newcastle stopper Steve Harper.

“I feel sorry for both of the goalkeepers involved – both De Gea and Keylor Navas. De Gea has not been playing and probably thinking that the move was going to happen. And then at the very last minute it hasn’t. His head will be scrambled,” Harper, 40, tells BBC Sport.

“I had talks with a couple of clubs in July, meeting with a Premier League manager and then a Championship manager after that, had a couple of deals which looked likely and then fell through. That was hard enough for me to deal with, never mind someone of David De Gea’s stature in terms of money involved and level he’s playing at.

“I coped by going on holiday with the family – whether De Gea gets that dispensation or not I don’t know! But it will be very tough for him.”

"When I was in charge of Leeds, I was far more responsive to supporters' needs and reactive to managers' demands than perhaps I should have been. I learned an interesting lesson."

Peter Ridsdale is best known for being chairman at Leeds United when they were a buying club, and Cardiff City when they were a selling one.

He has been behind some mega-money moves at the top of the Premier League, and also kept clubs afloat by thrashing out last-minute deals.

Probably his most famous buy while a chairman was a set of goldfish for his office whose upkeep cost Leeds £20 a month., external

  12. Anyone for Austin ?published at 17:02

Charlie Austin, scorer of a bagload of goals in the Premier League last season, has been readily available for £15m all summer.

Still nobody has taken him. It's a head scratcher to me, and to our man Jermaine Jenas.

Into the last hour, the home stretch, the final countdown.

If you've left it until now to try and sign someone, then what on earth are you playing at? You've had since May. You fools.

There will be plenty out there trying just that though. Where is Manchester United's skyscraper deal for Anthony Martial? We wait on.

  18. 'Fit Jelavic will score goals for Hammers'published at 16:50 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

Probably fair to say Nikica Jelavic's arrival at West Ham might not have got the pulses of Irons fans racing as quickly as the signings of Alex Song or Victor Moses.

However, the 30-year-old striker has been backed to score goals for the east London club by his former Hull team-mate Steve Harper.

“Jela is a battering ram of a centre forward. He might look ungainly but he is very effective. He is as fit as a fiddle, works his socks off and he can score goals," goalkeeper Harper tells BBC Sport.

"He has a reputation for one touch finishes which is fully justified. You're unlikely to see him beat three men and curl one into the top corner but has knack of scoring goals at important times. He will be a fantastic addition to the dressing room and his record proves when he is fit he has a decent goal return."
