Apart from the David De Gea madness it was relatively quiet in La Liga but there was an emotional return for a World Cup winner.

    Joaquin is going home.

The winger signed for Real Betis - the club where he started his career - on a two-year deal.

Joaquin left in 2006 for spells at Valencia, Malaga and finally Fiorentina.

Doria's nightmare at Marseille is over. The Brazilian signed for the French club in September 2014 but never played a game. He's now signed for Granada on loan until 2016 with an option to buy.

Elsewhere Sevilla have signed defender Marco Andreolli from Inter and the promising AC Milan youngster Hachim Mastour joined Malaga on a two-year loan.

But of course there's only one taking point; was that De Gea paperwork submitted on time?

So, Premier League and Football League chairmen take note.

The transfer window for both closes at 18:00 BST today. Six hours later, at midnight, the window in Scotland will "slam shut".

The windows for most of Europe's top leagues, external (including Germany, Italy, France and Spain) have already shut. However, the good news for English clubs is that the passing of deadlines only affects the purchasing of players, meaning clubs in this country can still sign players from said European leagues before 18:00 BST.

So, Lionel Messi could still make that move to Stoke yet.

  8. Real failpublished at 07:10

  11. Woodward on point?published at 07:01

It's a day for turning accountants into superheroes and administrators into megastars.

A lot of eyes will be on this man today.

Unsuccessful pursuits of Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos and, reportedly, Barcelona attacker Neymar have cost Ed Woodward time and energy.

Now, the Manchester chief executive has gone hard and late with a big-money move for Monaco striker Anthony Martial.

"Every day I am updated by him and I trust him," said Louis Van Gaal last week.

    Do United fans though?

  12. De Gea deal stalledpublished at 06:57

You can tick the "good old-fashioned paperwork mess-up" off your deadline day bingo card.

Last night Manchester United agreed a deal worth £29m for David de Gea to move to Real Madrid, including Keylor Navas heading in the opposite direction, only for the documents not to arrive where they needed to be by the Spanish transfer deadline of midnight.

Any chance of the Spanish authorities letting it go through on appeal?

It looks slim. Two years ago, Manchester United's own move for Real Madrid's Fabio Coentrao was dead and buried after narrowly missing the same deadline.

  13. Martial to Manchester Unitedpublished at 06:53

Raffaele Poli, head of the number-crunching CIES Football Observatory, was asked his opinion on Manchester United's valuation of Anthony Martial.

"It is an anomaly of the market. Manchester United have overpaid by making a pretty crazy bet on his future performance," he told L'Equipe.

The Sun make the same point in snappier fashion.

Only one place to start this morning. Old Trafford.

Monaco's promising 19-year-old forward Anthony Martial scored eight goals in 31 Ligue 1 games last season.

What do you reckon that adds up to in the transfer market?

Manchester United are set to complete a deal for him worth an eyebrow-raising £36m. Reports in France claim that it could rise to a staggering £58.5m.

As French sports newspaper L'Equipe point out,, external that is more than Real Madrid paid Juventus for Zinedine Zidane at his 2001 peak.

"Due to no fault of our own, we have had thrust upon us a new system which makes life more difficult."

That was the welcome given to the transfer window when it was brought in for the start of the 2002-03 season by Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein.

    He wasn't to know.

More difficult? Perhaps. More entertaining? Definitely.

    Eleven hours left.
