Five million pounds up front? No wonder that bid got rejected. Hardly covers TP's annual spend in the club shop.

  3. West Brom reject two Berahino bidspublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 1 September 2015

"West Brom have rejected two more bids today from Tottenham for Saido Berahino, making it four rebuffs in all.

"I understand they offered around £5m, with the rest loaded in instalments and incentive payments that West Brom simply wouldn't entertain. There would've been no advantage for West Brom in agreeing to sell such a prized asset so close to the deadline, with so little cash up front."

"Joleon Lescott first caught fantasy football managers' attention when he scored eight goals for Everton in the 2007-08 season and, while he hasn’t quite hit those attacking heights since, he remains a substantial goal threat.

"Whether he can bring defensive solidity to Aston Villa remains to be seen but, partnered with Micah Richards, who carries no shortage of attacking threat himself, one thing's for certain; there are goals in that defence, one way or the other."

Lateef Elford-Alliyu (Valletta - Coventry) Free

It's been a bit quiet in the Football League over the last hour or so, but is this the start of the rush?!

Coventry have just announced the signing of  Lateef Elford-Alliyu on a four month contract following a successful trial at the Ricoh Arena.

The 23-year-old, who started his career at West Brom, played for Maltese Premier League side Valletta last season where he scored 13 league goals.

  11. 'De Gea must start ahead of Romero'published at 16:42

One man who may not greet David De Gea with a warm smile and hug when he returns to Manchester United is Sergio Romero. Well he might do, but we all know that inside he will have been hoping not to see the Spaniard’s furry face at Carrington from this month onwards.

The Argentina international, a summer signing from Sampdoria, has started all of Manchester United’s Premier League matches this season. He kept clean sheets in his opening three Premier League matches but was at fault for Swansea’s winner in United’s 2-1 defeat on Sunday.

“Romero will have wanted De Gea out of the equation,” ex-Newcastle keeper Steve Harper tells BBC Sport. “Now he will be thinking what happens now? Is De Gea going to play? It’s a difficult situation for Romero too. He has played for Van Gaal before and we don't know if he was made any assurances about starting.

"But I think De Gea needs to play – it is in the best interests all around that he gets back up to speed and into the team as soon as possible.”

  12. De Gea to play?published at 16:41

The biggest story of deadline day may well end up being the deal that did not get done after David De Gea's move to Real Madrid was - rather inexcusably - not pushed through on time.

But what now for the Spanish keeper?

They have just over an hour to get the deal done. Fear not, United fans, as the club's admin staff are red hot at pushing these deals through on time...
