    Sunderland 0-0 Tottenham

Jermain Defoe again bursts through the Spurs defence. He spins Toby Alderweireld as though he isn't there, has his shirt tugged, and shoots at goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. The officials would have had a decision to make if he had gone down there inside the penalty area.

Some more nice approach play for Spurs as Son Heung-min feeds Nacer Chadli on the edge of the penalty area. Again though, the cross is blocked as another Spurs moves breaks down. The Londoners love passing the ball around but their final product - at the moment - is dire.

Jermain Defoe is looking lively for the hosts. This time he races into the penalty area, opts to square to strike partner Ola Toivonen but Spurs just about scramble the ball back to goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Could Defoe have shot? Yes.

Ronaldo Burgundy: Shocking miss by Defoe. Why do commentators persist in saying 'unlucky' when somebody hits the post. He missed. End of story.

So just where is South Korean striker/winger/attacking midfielder Son Heung-min playing for Spurs today?

Erm, just about everywhere - he's even had a touch at right-back.

Nacer Chadli's pass finds Harry Kane on the right of Sunderland's penalty area. The England striker shoots from an acute angle and it is deflected wide for a corner. The resulting delivery is cleared.

The heat map for both teams below (Sunderland left), shows they have struggled to offer too much as an attacking threat. Defoe's effort is the closest we have come to an opener by far. Plenty of speculative shots from distance but not much action inside either area. Yet.

So close to an opener for the hosts. Jermain Defoe is allowed to race through on goal but, with just Hugo Lloris to beat, he strikes the ball against the post. Should score and he knows it. Jeremain Lens' through ball was an absolute beauty though.

Plenty of industry so far but not a lot of ability. Jeremain Lens looks to change that, he cuts inside, but shoots wide for the hosts.

Anthony Gleeson:  Just to inform Spurs fans that Son is not a striker, he played behind the strikers at Leverkusen

Richard Podway:  Poch plays with a lone striker so do people expect Son to replace Kane? Son can play up front, but is better behind or wide.

Some worrying news for Sunderland fans. Eight of the 10 goals the Black Cats have conceded in the Premier this season have come in the first half - hold firm and you are on easy street then...

Another massive cheer from the Sunderland fans as Younes Kaboul's wing play - yes, you read that right - earns a corner. Can they?

No, a very, very deep corner is easily cleared.

At the other end, Harry Kane wanders into a shooting opportunity but blasts over the bar from outside the penalty area. End-to-end stuff.

And a booking for Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen after a naughty challenge on Jeremain Lens.

A saving tackle from Billy Jones on Ben Davies as he looks to race through. Corner for Spurs but Sunderland again hold firm.

On the break, Jermain Defoe hits a dipper from 25 yards but easy enough for goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

    Steve Harper
BBC Radio 5 live at the Stadium of Light

"It’s been a bold start from Sunderland and that’s a reflection of the manager’s selection – a 4-4-2 with the new signing Ola Toivonen up front alongside Jermain Defoe playing against his former club. There was a half-hearted shout for a penalty for Spurs but it was more a coming together and they’ve just taken the sting out of the game slightly, with Sunderland coming into it."

Some respite for Spurs as Son Heung-min stands over a free-kick some 40 yards out. He whips the ball in invitingly but Sunderland stand firm and head clear. Nice delivery but shouldn't a £22m striker be inside the penalty area?

Paul Collins: Pay £22m  for a striker you badly need only to play him on the wide right of three behind the striker. Spurs are stupid.

Paul Murphy: Our bench looks weak. All well and good offloading the dead wood but you need squad depth.
