Interesting chat on both TV and radio that England look good on the counter-attack, and that is how they should set up as they won't see much of the ball against good opposition in a major tournament.

For as long as I've been alive England's failure to keep the ball well enough has been bemoaned. Some things it seems never change.

Switzerland haven't learned. They throw bodies forward and get caught on the break. England should be 1-0 up."

England, and Wayne Rooney, coming alive now. Rooney carries the ball from deep, finds the overlapping James Milner making ground on his left shoulder but Milner's left-footed shot is tame and it's an easy save.

Milner has one goal in 56 caps. And it showed.

Competitive start but England starting to take control now. Luke Shaw is making inroads down the left and there is a buzz around Wembley every time Wayne Rooney gets the ball in a dangerous position - and just about everybody must know why by now.

It's a sign of a good striker to shoot so early. Unfortunately for Wayne and England it was just past the post."

    England 0-0 Switzerland

Wayne Rooney's first sight of goal, drifting to the left to pick the ball up, like Thierry Henry, he backs the defender up, like Thierry Henry, then curls wide, unlike Thierry Henry.

Good movement from the skipper though.

Nice from Luke Shaw, early cross and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain arrives on it to smash a volley high and wide over the top. A half chance.

It's that final third where we want to see consistency from England and so far we haven't seen it. The game still hasn't settled. Both teams are working very hard.

Patient build-up down England's left between Jonjo Shelvey, James Milner and Raheem Sterling but it comes to nothing. The problem with this incredibly straightforward qualification process for England is that it must be hard for Roy Hodgson to gauge how good or bad his side really are.

Friendlies in the winter against France, Germany and Spain should sort that out.

Handball from Stephan Lichtstiner gifts England a free-kick on the left wing, James Milner steps up and - it's easily cleared. David Beckham would not approve.

He was Mr. Solo! Good call.

Switzerland continuing a good spell of pressure with a few crosses in but England deal with them OK. Strange atmosphere inside the ground. No jeopardy in the game for England.

Like an end-of-season match when you're already safe.

That was shocking marking by Switzerland (see 5 mins). It's a free header for Gary Cahill and Wayne Rooney gets the slightest touch with the ball just going wide.

Chris Smalilng is a bit sluggish to get across to make a tackle on Josip Drmic and now the Swiss have a corner. Is Smalling a first-choice for Roy Hodgson now?

Luke Shaw - who looks leaner, meaner this season - wins an early corner. Positive start for England.

Gary Cahill meets the corner with a header and Yann Sommer just about keeps it out with Wayne Rooney sniffing about in front of him.

Ross Barkley settles into midfield then and is straight on the ball. Jonjo Shelvey the deepest of the England midfielders, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the right and Raheem Sterling on the left. Plenty of pace around Wayne Rooney.

There was no one near him when he went down. It's a hamstring.

Straight down the tunnel for Fabian Delph. A nice appearance bonus there, one sprint and an early bath.

    Here comes Ross Barkley.

Bad news for Manchester City, bad news from Fabian Delph. His hamstring lasts about 12 seconds before it pings and it's game over for the midfielder.

Did he have a proper warm-up?
