The best in recent years - goes without saying - but nobody is queuing up to proclaim Wayne Rooney as the best England player ever.

Over the years we've had good strikers. Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst and then we had Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Michael Owen. Robbie Fowler and Andy Cole couldn’t get in the side when they were regular scorers. Peter Crouch's record was good in recent times as was Jermain Defoe's, but nobody could do what Rooney did. He drops deep and can pick out a pass. It's not his fault he wasn't around when the greats were playing. He's been the best player we've had up front in the last few years.

I was interested in the England back four. I would have played John Stones. The Swiss are a dangerous side, but leave him in the team. I don't get that Michael Carrick (before he was injured) was probably going to start instead of Jonjo Shelvey.

All still quiet at Wembley as Switzerland's team come out to warm-up but still a sense of great anticipation in the air as history could be witnessed here tonight.

It has been a saga but one more goal will give Rooney the England all-time record of 50 goals - and there is still plenty to create interest after manager Roy Hodgson named his starting line-up.

Hodgson admitted he kept some players back from the win in San Marino that secured qualificiation for Euro 2016 with the Swiss in mind, so good opportunities for the likes of Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling, Fabian Delph and Raheem Sterling to make their mark tonight.

Jonjo Shelvey, man of the match in San Marino, deservedly retains his place.

Elsewhere, Spain know they can't afford a slip up as they travel to Group C's bottom side Macedonia.

The defending European champions are level on points at the top of the group with Solvakia, who entertain third-placed Ukraine.

In Group G, unbeaten Austria need just a point in Sweden to qualify for France.

The Austrians could still qualify if they lose, provided Russia do not win in Liechtenstein.

It's not often you see England top of a table, so we may as well savour this one.

Qualifying has been very straightforward for England - boring, to be honest. Or maybe I am too cynical.

One of things that stands out is that Chris Smalling plays on the right of the two centre-backs at Manchester United. That's where Gary Cahill plays. I would have liked to have seen John Stones there tonight. He's the best ball-playing central defender England have.

  20. 'I'll never retire'published at 19:03

    England v Switzerland (19:45 BST)

Some rather ominous words from Wayne Rooney in the pre-match news conference, with the striker saying he would 'never retire' from England duty.

Also, Rooney sees no reason why he cannot continue playing for the national team beyond the World Cup in Russia in 2018.

"I feel I'm capable of going to Russia," he added. "After that, it may be a realistic time to see how I feel and if I feel it's not right for England or myself, I'll have a decision to make.

"If I feel I can carry on, I'll try. But if the manager says he doesn't feel I'm in his plans for the next tournament, it's probably better I don't play in the qualifying games because I won't be going to the tournament."
