If anything the players may be too eager. That's what I'm worried about, some of the tackles they put in at this level and we have a Championship referee. I've no worries about the lads' fitness. They will be fine.

We didn't even think about the FA Cup when we took over. I have to say since last Christmas the new managers have been brilliant, they've lifted the whole place. I can't believe we're in the First Round!

Salford is the second most populous city after Wakefield without a league club.

Salford is immortalised in L S Lowry’s paintings and the song ‘Dirty Old Town’ – written in 1949 by Salford-born Ewan MacColl (father of Kirsty) and most notably popularised by The Dubliners, Rod Stewart and latterly The Pogues – with its lines about factories, smoky wind and old canal.

This man missed a game to do a modelling job. Hard to believe

Salford City striker and star of the documentary Gareth Seddon on BBC Radio 5 live: “It’s amazing for the lads and the club. I just hope that one of the lads can be a hero tonight. It does bring added pressure when some of the greatest players Manchester United have ever had are in the stands every week.

“I was watching the documentary from behind the settee for most of it! I did miss a game to go modelling but sometimes you have to put your family first. I’ve got a mortgage and a little girl to feed.

“I’ll be at the game tonight. It will be a brilliant occasion, I can tell how excited everyone involved is. If we perform on the night I think we’ve got a brilliant chance."

Salford City v Notts County (19:55 GMT)

Some of the best - if not publishable before the watershed - moments from last night's TV documentary came from joint managers Anthony 'Jonno' Johnson and Bernard Morley. Self-employed wagon driver and plasterer by day, non-league managers and extremely scary managers by night.

The uncompromising double act were headhunted in the New Year from Salford’s local rivals Ramsbottom United, where they had worked for six years. They had enjoyed two promotions in three years (2012 and 2014) to lead the Rams to the highest position in their history.

They joined after the Class of 92 concluded that the management team they had inherited, Phil Power and assistant Dave Chadwick, were no longer getting the best out of the players.

The decision paid off handsomely as Salford won 16 of their remaining 18 games (starting when Paul Scholes and Phil Neville took temporary charge for the 2-1 victory over Kendal Town on 3 January) to win the Evo-Stik North title, setting a club record by winning all of their last nine.

    Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley

Johnson admits he was starstruck when he first met his new bosses: “It is like watching the telly but it is happening to me. I wake up in the morning to an email from Gary Neville. I come down to the ground and Phil Neville is shaking my hand. It is complete madness. But they are just ordinary lads like us, even with everything they have achieved.”
