"And so on 15th August 1987, the first appearance of an inflatable banana at a British football ground happened."

A few of you are asking why they are so many inflatable bananas in the crowd tonight. Well, they have a place in Manchester CIty folklore, and former player Imre Varadi in particular.

Shohidur Rahman: Everton better go through tonight. As a United fan I can't have a Liverpool vs City final.

Mark Taylor: From Man U fans everywhere. Come on you Toffees. Things are bad enough at the moment without City getting to the final

  3. Deulofeu looks the keypublished at 19:56 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2016

The manner in which Everton's Gerard Deulofeu took the City defence to the cleaners in that early foot race will surely have been noted by manager Roberto Martinez.

Deulofeu can be inconsistent but is hugely gifted - and has the pace to make life very difficult.

City with a strong spell of possession, patiently working for an opening. Yaya Toure then goes for the big ball over the top and it almost frees Raheem Sterling but Joel Robles is able to sweep up.

Entertaining and open game so far. Both sides look vulnerable in defence, it's the Premier League way. Should mean goals.

John Stones plays a slightly dicey pass across his own penalty area and Phil Jagielka has to stretch to get there. But then Everton counter, Gerard Deulofeu gets clear down the right and absolutely sears past Martin Demichelis, brilliant wing play.

Get your head up and find a man! He can't though - corner.

My three at the back, Leighton Baines in midfield theory for Everton is utter nonsense. John Stones is at right-back in a back four.

City have lined up with Yaya Toure in a deep role and Raheem Sterling up front.

"I think Yaya Toure wouldn't be here under Pep Guardiola. I see him as a different sort of 10 to David Silva. Silva is the best 10 in the league, just ahead of Arsenal's Mesut Ozil. Next season, Guardiola will probably go for the youthful fluidity of three behind Sergio Aguero."

Everton manager Roberto MartinezImage source, Getty Images

The near universal viewpoint of all of my fellow Evertonian friends and family is that Martinez has the most gifted Everton side since the 80s, yet we are underperforming significantly. The atmosphere at Goodison against Swansea shows the significant pressure he is now under.
