    Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini:

"It's the third time we'll play Everton in one month - we know their team.

"The most important thing is to try to play another final at Wembley. That is our target. After we lost to Everton 2-1, I said that if we don't qualify for the final, it's not because of that game but because we can't win at home at least 1-0.

"Maybe Everton haven't been in a final for many years and they will be motivated but our team will do all they can to get there too."

"They've got nothing other than a set of Premier League results that are not good enough for the talent and attacking arsenal in this squad, and a home record that needs addressing."

That was the verdict from the Liverpool Echo, external after Everton's home defeat to Swansea on Sunday.

  5. 'Results have not been fair'published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2016

Man City v Everton (19:45 GMT)

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: "Disappointments are painful at the moment because results have not been fair in reflecting the efforts and football we have played.

"Psychologically, you have to go through experiences in order to create that resilience to create that winning mentality.

"Getting a big achievement and reach something quite special could help to that positive outlook in our games. It will be an enormous landmark for the club if we can reach the final of the League Cup."

Brilliantly, Peterborough boss Graham Westley said his players need to take inspiration from the film The Revenant following their 1-0 home defeat by Burton this week.

In the Oscar-nominated film, actor Leonardo DiCaprio plays Hugh Glass, who has to fight for survival after being attacked by a bear.

Posh's performance against Burton was labelled "rubbish" by Westley.

"You can see in that film what a human being can do if his motivation and desire is sufficient," he said.

Has Westley tapped into something here?

Which line of dialogue from the cinema could inspire your team to glory? Which fictional character should your manager channel in his dressing room talks?

There's got to be potential gold here. Over to you...

Everton go into tonight's game with a narrow 2-1 lead after the first leg at Goodison.

City looked to have secured a draw with 14 minutes left, when Jesus Navas finished a sweeping counter attack following brilliant work by Sergio Aguero.

That equaliser cancelled out Ramiro Funes Mori's opener for Everton on the stroke of half-time.

Argentine Funes Mori pounced after Willy Caballero saved Ross Barkley's shot - although City were nursing an understandable sense of injustice with Lukaku standing in an offside position in front of the keeper.

But Everton refused to be sunk by Navas' sucker punch and responded within two minutes, Romelu Lukaku heading in his 12th goal in 12 games from Gareth Barry's perfect cross.

Roberto Martinez has reached a defining point in his career as Everton manager.

Against the backdrop of growing fan discontent with his methods, Everton have the chance to reach their first major final since 2009 as they take a 2-1 lead into the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg at Manchester City.

If Everton can secure a place against Liverpool at Wembley on 28 February, Martinez will buy himself valuable time.

Fail and even more scrutiny will fall on why an Everton squad containing rich young talent such as John Stones, Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku lie only 12th in the Premier League with a dismal record of only six wins from 23 games. A huge night for Martinez in store.

  15. Are Everton under-achieving?published at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2016

Man City v Everton (19:45 GMT)

Eight points clear of the relegation zone, eight points adrift of fifth.

It's very much a case of mid-table mediocrity for Everton in the Premier League at the moment. So where should they be aiming?

I would guess most sides with a spine of Stones, Barkley and Lukaku, plus Deulofeu, Baines, Coleman and Mirallas would fancy a shot at the top six.

But is it really a bad enough season that Roberto Martinez's job should be considered as under threat?

    £50m+ of young English talent.

90 minutes away from a Merseyside cup final?

It is a big night for Everton manager Roberto Martinez.

On one hand he is facing dissent from some fans after a stuttering run of form in the Premier League and the overriding feeling of under-achievement.

On the other he could steer the Toffees to their first cup final in seven years and their first league cup final in 32 years tonight.

It's not make-or-break time. But it's pretty much must-win time...
