I just want to win the Premier League - Mane

Liverpool's Sadio Mane told the BBC World Service that he never knew Premier League winners got medals - and that he doesn't care about them.

"I never knew that happened, but I don't care about medals.

"We have to keep working hard to get what we want. Our target from the beginning was to win the league, so if we win it, it will be great for the club and for the fans."

It was at Vicarage Road in August 2017 that Liverpool's current front three were first unleashed; Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane all scored - of course they did.

Those three have now started 69 Premier League games together, scoring 105 goals in those fixtures. The latest of those goals secured an 18th consecutive league win despite a patchy display against West Ham on Monday.

Watford desperately need a win after taking a solitary point from their last five games - but this might not be the day.

  8. Hornets to give Liverpool a bit of trouble?published at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 29 February 2020

    Watford v Liverpool (17:30 GMT)

Watford's bounce - or improvement in results - when Nigel Pearson first took charge is well and truly over now. They have only taken two points from their past five league games.

The Hornets have given Jurgen Klopp's side a bit of trouble at Vicarage Road in the past couple of seasons and I would back them to score on Saturday - but, the way Liverpool are, you still have to think they will win.

  14. 'We were not clinical enough'published at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2020

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Watford

    Watford

Watford's Troy Deeney speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think we had our chances throughout the game. We were not clinical enough today. We are digging. We take it on the chin and we know we took it to Manchester United but that does not change the result."

On the disallowed goal: "I didn’t know it was not going to stand, that’s why I celebrated. You automatically think it’s a goal but within a minute it was disallowed. You take it on the chin and move forward."

  15. 'It was a scrappy affair'published at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2020

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Watford

    Watford

Nigel Pearson speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a difficult day for us. We came in at 1-0 down at half time when it was a scrappy affair. We had chances but did not pass the ball with a purpose. In the second half we were much better and we ended up on the back of a 3-0 defeat. It’s a difficult place to come.

"When we have done well we have played as a team but we got a little bit stretched and they used that. We like to press from the front. I think our best opportunities came from those situations. They were clinical in their finishes. Sometimes things don’t go the way you want. We have a group of players who will get back to work and move on from here. We did not have one of our best days but we will come back from it."

  16. 'It's frustrating because we were a little disjointed'published at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2020

    FT: Man Utd 3-0 Watford

    Watford

Watford manager Nigel Pearson speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a difficult day. A day in which we started okay. We had opportunities we did not make the most of and I really think we put them in a position where we frustrated them. To come in at half time at 1-0 down after conceding a penalty when we had the attacking situation put a different complexion on it. I think we started the second half okay and we went on to be opened up. It’s a difficult one to get a really flavour of exactly what went wrong. It’s frustrating because I know when we are at our best we could have had them. I thought today we were a little disjointed from time to time."

On Watford's ruled out goal: "I was unaware until I went to look at the monitor. I think we are all pretty accustomed to the wait to confirm the decision. It’s a part of the game now."

On facing Liverpool: "I want us to function well as a team. I want us to show the fighting spirit that we have recently. When you are in a relegation battle you have to realise that it increases anxiety. We have good players and we are aware we can win. Today was a difficult day and we are going to go back to basics on the training pitch."
