Imagine that heart-sinking, stomach-dropping numbness felt by the Football Association suit responsible for looking after the Jules Rimet trophy when news reached him that it had been nicked. Awful.

We've all had those gut-wrenching moments of realisation that our favourite sporting item has been lost/stolen/thrown out by your mum. So tell us yours.

Mine came when I found out that Mother Jurejko had thrown out my first Leeds United shirt. Not any Leeds United shirt, mind. My 1991-92 Championship-winning shirt signed by Tony Dorigo. Devastated.

Come on, don't be shy. Tell us your stories by tweeting #bbcfootball or texting 81111.

Bobby Moore lifting the World Cup after England beat Germany in 1966 is THE most iconic image of this country's footballing history.

But the Three Lions skipper could have been left grasping at thin air in the Wembley royal box.

That's because 50 years ago this weekend, the Football Association were left panicking over the theft of the Jules Rimet trophy less than four months before the tournament was due to begin.

Step forward, a small, mixed breed collie called Pickles....

  4. Vote - how England's squad should lookpublished at 18:13 Greenwich Mean Time 26 March 2016

    Germany v England (19:45 GMT))

It's a debate that will rage in pubs, coffee shops, schools, universities and offices until an hour before England kick off their Euro 2016 campaign against Russia: what sort of starting XI should Roy Hodgson pick?

Here's the opportunity to have your say in our BBC Sport vote. Just use the button on this page.

Load up the youth – it’s time for brave new England

Keep it tried and tested – nous and experience is required in France

Fox the opposition – load up with Leicester and Spurs players

Gold blend – youth and experience works best

The results will be revealed during half-time. Calm yourselves until then.

There's a distinct sprinkling of Spurs seasoning in this England dish tonight.

Four Tottenham players will start for England, a reward for their part in the club's pursuit of a first league title in 55 years.

Danny Rose makes his England debut at left-back, while midfield duo Dele Alli and Eric Dier get the chance to press their claims for a place in manager Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 squad.

Harry Kane, the Premier League's top scorer with 21 goals this season, starts up top.

Even if none of those scenarios (see the previous entry) pan out then, at the very least, we are hoping for an entertaining pre-Euro 2016 warm-up.

England coach Roy Hodgson has named an experimental side, partly through choice, partly through necessity, to face the world champions in their own backyard.

    Morale-boosting performance? Or morale-sapping thumping?

Hello! Or should that be guten tag?! Either way...welcome to one of THE great footballing fixtures.

World Cup finals, European Championships and important tournament qualifiers are usually the setting for these memorable Anglo-Deutsche moments. But who knows what can happen in a March friendly...

Maybe our kids will be telling their grandkids about Dele Alli's outrageous mid-air back-heel winner for England.

Maybe the old folks will be reminiscing in 40 years' time about German debutant Jonathan Tah seeing red after 10 seconds for a Macho Man Randy Savage-style elbow drop on Eric Dier.

Or maybe Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson's Moonwalk celebration as the visitors smash in their eighth goal of the night will still be having six billion clicks per year on YouTube in 2066.

Gazza's tears. Gerd Muller's acrobatic winner. Gareth Southgate's penalty miss. Andreas Moller's strut. Michael Owen's hat-trick. Oh, and Bobby Moore lifting some small gold-plated, wing-figured trophy in 1966.

Germany. England. In the 86 years since their first meeting, there have been more iconic scenes than the Godfather Trilogy.

What do you mean this is only a friendly? Doesn't matter....
