Mike Hall: Butland learned a lesson he should have learnt years ago. Should never have played on when injured.

Chris Mitchell: Really poor from Dier & Butland there. Backed off & off then the keeper done at near post. Proves how much of a miss Hart is

Bob: Keeper Butland should have gone down when he was injured!

    Germany 1-0 England

Instead of England clawing their way back ahead of half-time, they almost go two behind. Mario Gomez shuffles into space just inside the England box, firing a low shot which a sliding Danny Rose boots clear.

The visitors survive, just. Time for 15 minutes reflection...

  3. INJURY TIMEpublished at 45+1 mins

    Germany 1-0 England

Two minutes of stoppage time for England to restore parity before the break.

That's Jack Butland's night over. Because of his injury, not his enforced error. The Stoke keeper is carried off the pitch on a stretcher, we will let you know when we have more about the injury. Southampton's Fraser Forster is summoned from the bench.

"You could see he wasn't fit because he didn't get across to that near post.

"No goalkeeper of international standard should be beaten at their near post."

  7. goal

GOAL - Germany 1-0 Englandpublished at 43 mins

    Toni Kroos

Oh poor Jack Butland! The England keeper's weak clearance, moments after he picked up an injury, goes straight to the Germany midfield - and the visitors are punished.

Toni Kroos waltzes forward unopposed, blasting inside Butland's right-hand post from 25 yards. I'd guess a fit Butland, not thinking about his knock, would have saved it.

Danny Rose, on his England debut, stands over the ball. Free-kick duties on your debut? But his delivery lacks height and is headed clear. The ball is recycled though as Germany struggle to break out of their box. Rose gets another chance, but his low cross is hacked clear.

    Germany 0-0 England

Harry Kane and Danny Welbeck combine again, this time down the left. Welbeck's run is rudely halted by Germany right-back Emre Can. Yellow card and a free-kick in a dangerous position on the flank...

    Germany 0-0 England

Mesut Ozil loses the ball near the halfway line, his pocket pinched by the light-footed Eric Dier. England spring forward through Harry Kane, who slips the ball through to Danny Welbeck. The Arsenal man slightly slips as he shoots low, the ball runs invitingly to a team-mate but the shot from edge of the box flies wide of the goal.

    Decent chance wasted.

"We have not mentioned Ozil very much in this game and that just shows how ineffective he has been in this game."

Josh Cobb: All we have to do now is clone Dele Alli

David Wetton: Great to see Dele Alli being given a chance. Want Vardy on at some point. His season demands no less!

John Dunthorne: Germany certainly not frightened to foul to stop England attacks forming. England ok, just last pass letting them down.

England continue to defend well when Germany have possession. The visitors are organised, dropping back into a protective formation when the world champions probe. Toni Kroos eventually loses patience, smashing one goalwards from distance. Only the ball boy stood behind the England goal, not away keeper Jack Butland, is forced to work.

Jamie Millar: Is the linesman Russian!?

David McNaught: So, all square now right Germany, that offside and our '66 goal? All good.

Alex Lonsdale: We got lucky there but would of been hard on us great start so far.

England have responded strongly to that setback that wasn't actually a setback. You know what I mean. The visitors back on the attack. Dele Alli spins on a sixpence about 25 yards out, Germany defender Antonio Rudiger sliding to cut out his attempted through ball. But Germany don't relieve the pressure, the ball dropping to Harry Kane who can't test Manuel Neuer.

Undaunted, England push forward again and Jordan Henderson tries his luck from distance. Decent enough connection but very comfortable for Manuel Neuer.
