Germany think they have scored. They haven't. Mario Gomez drills in from 15 yards, across Jack Butland into the bottom corner. The on-loan Besiktas man celebrates, the home fans do too. But the linesman's flag is wafting - offside. Tight, very tight...

Tom Holmes: Lallana and Dele Alli have been very impressive so far. The high press is causing Germany problems.

Nick Green: Can't help thinking Jamie Vardy would really unsettle this German team.

Harry Kane runs at the German defence for the first time really, skipping past Jonas Hector with ease. His cross is poor though, easily hacked clear by the home defence. Danny Welbeck fires over moments later.

All gone a bit quiet inside the Olympiastadion. Germany try the patient approach, moving the ball quickly around the England box as they try to pick an hole. Nothing doing though.

I've just seen someone tweet about a popular early-2000s alcopop being advertised on the hoardings around the Olympiastadion pitch. If only it was 2001 and England had Emile Heskey up front eh...

John Pierce: Whilst I've never agree on personnel, the fact we've picked a young team & they're pressing high up the pitch is encouraging.

Neil Leverett: This game is crying out for Jamie Vardy off the shoulder of Rudiger.

"Henderson and Dier are just sweeping up in front of the back four. The only time England look under any pressure is when crosses come in."

Alli is floating like a butterfly, not quite stinging like a bee. Sorry. The England number 10 almost hurts the Germans though, flashing a rising 20-yard shot just over the home goal. Even steven so far in Berlin.

Time! England's young buck Dele Alli doesn't realise how much time he has when Chris Smalling picks him out with a Hollywood ball from the back. The Spurs goes with his head, straight into Manuel Neuer's hands. Could have taken that down.

They're queuing up in the England box. The visitors can't clear their lines a host of grey/green shirts look to bury the loose ball. Mats Hummels has a swing as Jack Butland is forced into serious action for the first time, then Marco Reus makes the best connection but drags a low half-volley wide of the left-hand post.

Germany opening up the English defence a little bit now. Jonas Hector gallops down the left, only for his cross to be snaffled up by Eric Dier and cleared.

Moments later, Emre Can's cross from the other side can't be turned goalwards by Mario Gomez's head, with the ball put put for a corner.

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at the Olympiastadion, Berlin

Aside from neither group of fans observing the national anthems very well and some idiotic shouting during the minute's silence, there is a very sedate atmosphere inside Berlin's Olympiastadion.

The main talking point so far is the two sets of kits being worn by the teams - making this look, to the fashion conscious at least, anything but a game between Germany and England.

What were we saying about German stereotypes being broken down? It's true. Not much efficiency from the home side so far. A sloppy clearance from keeper Manuel Neuer gifts England the ball on the right flank, Danny Welbeck's vicious delivery flashing across the German goal. Impressive opening by Roy Hodgson's men.

Chance for England! The visitors are gifted a cheap corner of their own, an unmarked Gary Cahill rising highest to meet the ball. But England's skipper for the night, usually so dangerous at attacking set-pieces, shanks his header wide.

Poor delivery from the Germans as England clear the set-piece easily. Nothing central defenders hate more than going forward then having to trudge back after a rubbish corner...

First chance for Germany. A poor clearance from England keeper Jack Butland is pounced on by Toni Kroos like a hungry Jack Russell diving on a piece of meat. He feeds the ball forward to Mario Gomez, whose knockdown is scooped over the crossbar by Sami Khedira with the aid of a timely block. Corner...
