  1. Bolton going down?published at 15:44 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Football League update

Bolton are in the mire. Derby have gone 2-0 up through Tom Ince. Wanderers need to win to avoid being relegated from the Championship.

In League One, it's a similar story for Crewe, who trail to a Louis Dodds goal at Port Vale. As it stands, they're down too.

League Two is curious. Northampton continue to lead Bristol Rovers 1-0 - that result would secure promotion. They'll be champions if Oxford fail to beat Crawley, but Chris Maguire has just levelled for the U's to make it 1-1,

  2. Newcastle doomed?published at 15:44 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Southampton 2-0 Newcastle

    David Pleat
Former Tottenham boss at St James' Park for 5 live Sport

"Benitez will go in at half-time scratching his head. It really is going to be very difficult for them to come back from this. There's been no sign in the first half of Newcastle being the aggressors. Southampton have been very comfortable.

All those poor Newcastle supporters who've traveled all the way down from Tyneside must now be looking and thinking about different trips next season."

Newly-named Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is currently sat on a veranda in Italy, munching on a pepperoni pizza and watching this game on a stream on his laptop.

He's got his notepad out too and has made the following notes for when he takes over:

    1) Send Matt Miazga back to America

    2) Tell Ruben Lotus-Cheek he's got potential but needs to put more effort in

    3) Sign Jefferson Montero

Norwich defender Timm Klose has picked up an injury while challenging Dwight Gayle - he's had to go off on a stretcher. On comes Seb Bassong.

    Garth Crooks
Former Spurs striker on Final Score

“I think it’s a stonewall penalty. Anywhere else on the field and the referee gives it, but because it’s in the box he doesn't. It might have not been a foul in my day, thank God the game has evolved. It was bordering on GBH.”

    Graziano Pelle (38 mins)

Oh dear. Awful defending again as Southampton go 2-0 up. Darly Janmaat slips over to allow Dusan Tadic into the area, he finds Shane Long inside the area and his lay-off is picked up by Graziano Pelle - who had also fallen over - and the Italian sweeps home low and hard from 12 yards out.

    Southampton 1-0 Newcastle

One shot. None on target, none off target, one blocked.

That's the sum of Newcastle's attacking efforts in this opening 35 minutes or so.

  9. Postpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Swansea 1-0 Chelsea

You know when a player "has him", puts in a sort of performance which will give his opposing number nightmares? That's Jefferson Montero on Cesar Azpilicueta at the moment.

The Ecuadorian is giving his Spanish opponent a torrid time, running this way and that, Azpilicueta doesn't know if he's coming or going.

Meanwhile, Gylfi Sigurdsson has another effort which Asmir Begovic can clutch to his chest.

Jonny Duchezeau: Worst Chelsea centre half partnership Chelsea have had in 20 years

Javel: Clearly, even if they had Pep in charge, #NUFC, external are incapable of fighting their way out of a wet cardboard box

Jay: Classy from Sigurdsson but that was all about Montero.

  11. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Crystal Palace 0-0 Norwich

The Norwich players are fuming, raging for a penalty here as Matty Jarvis is barged to the deck by Damien Delaney! There was no contact with the ball and it was a very debatable challenge indeed. Penalty for me.

From the corner Wayne Hennessey flaps badly again and again is very lucky to escape.

Tom, London: Bit unfair saying Mike Ashley has been awful, Newcastle have spent more than almost anyone else this season and have bought in one of top managers in Europe!

Ken, Newcastle: How NUFC could do with a John Anderson. A proper defender.

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair: "Gylfi Sigurdsson went to Tottenham, it didn't work out, he’s come back to Swansea and sometimes a club fits.

"It’s good technique, he has to fall away from the ball and it’s a little bit shinny, but they all count.

"Asmir Begovic has come from the near post, so he knew if he could get it in that corner he had a great chance."

  14. Bolton in botherpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 9 April 2016

    Football League update

As it stands, Bolton are going to be relegated from the Championship today.

They're 1-0 down at Derby, with Johnny Russell getting the goal. Wanderers need to win to have a chance of taking it to another game, but Rotherham's 2-0 lead over MK Dons does not help either.

In League Two, Northampton Town need a win to clinch promotion. Nicky Adams has them 1-0 up over Bristol Rovers - "we are going up" sing the Cobblers fans.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Bournemouth

Villa now six-and-a-half hours without a goal. Many fans were not entering the stadium until the seventh minute in protest at the way the club is run.

25 minutes in and still plenty of empty seats, it's just as well they haven't turned up because this had been an absolutely terrible match so far.

Scott Dann has a tame header saved from a corner as both sides continue to threaten sporadically. It's an entertaining enough game at Selhurst Park.

    Volley, a real one.

Gylfi Sigurdsson threatened earlier and now grabs the opener.

It's all thanks to Jefferson Montero on the left flank, whose trickery turned two Chelsea defenders inside out and the Ecuadorian's cross into the box is not dealt with very well.

American Matt Miazga's header is a poor one, reaching the edge of the box and Sigurdsson winds his left peg up before smashing volley into the bottom corner.
