"If Manchester United can go to White Hart Lane and not lose that would be huge - this is a defining week in their season. There is a bit of momentum behind Manchester United at the moment. If he finishes in the top four and wins the FA Cup it would be hard to get rid of Louis van Gaal.

"They have put themselves in a strong position, he would expect to stay."

Well now Tottenham know what they are up against.

Jamie Vardy's second goal in stoppage time gave Leicester a 2-0 win which puts them 10 points clear for the time being.

"There is no fear factor about playing Manchester United. It's gone, completely gone. I think Louis van Gaal will be out with the empties at the end of the season to be honest with you. 

"The whole thing about Jose Mourinho, if he's been told he doesn't have a chance [of taking over at Old Trafford] then why isn't his agent pushing him for every other job? He's gone so quiet that you think he must be in a job."

At the end of play this afternoon Tottenham could be just four points behind leaders Leicester with five games remaining. A two-generation wait for glory could be coming to an end.

Of course, alternatively, Spurs could well be 10 points back from the runaway leaders. A footnote in a remarkable story.

As it stands, Leicester are 1-0 up against Sunderland with less than 10 minutes to go.

Vertonghen has been out since the end of January.

In any other season over the last 20-odd years, a potential Tottenham title win would have mobilised the neutrals into a Lilywhite army, roaring Spurs on towards glory. Wouldn't it?

But Leicester City have stolen all of the limelight. Now Tottenham must steal their advantage if they are to win the league for the first time since Barbie got Ken...
