Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: "It was good. No matter how you play against Manchester United it is always difficult to make chances. We could have scored more goals in the first half, but that's life.

"Scoring the second goal was very important. We know it is only the first leg but we needed to win it and we did. We are in a good position now, we want to go through to the next round.

"The atmosphere tonight was unbelievable. Really great and I want to say thank you to everyone that was involved. That was Liverpool how I knew it before I came here."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "It was not too bad to be honest! We were really good from the first second, everything was there but we could have scored more. That sounds crazy I know but we had the chances. In the end, 2-0, if you said this before the game of course I take it. But it's not over, we go to Manchester but it's the best thing we could do.

"It was a great atmosphere, I am so pleased for all of the people who have had harder times with us this season. Tonight was the first part of paying them back.

"We gave them no time in any situation. I'm really pleased for Joe Allen, he has not been playing and I don't like this but he showed how strong he is."

Chris Byland: LVG should probably read about the history between United and Liverpool before he goes round praising them and their fans...

Nikhil Jadva: Was LVG watching the same match as everyone else? Fellaini was absolutely appalling.

"The fairytale has gone," say Rio Ferdinand on BT Sport as the pundits continue to digest that Manchester United performance. 

What do we think?

Lewis Cameron: some players make others around them better. Fellaini makes everyone else worse. United so much better with younger players.

"Manchester United didn't need a new philosophy. They had one for 20 years which worked."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal: "I have to say that Liverpool created an atmosphere that was fantastic. They played very good in the first half and we could not cope with their pressure. David de Gea was fantastic. But we had a cheap penalty and in the second half we changed the shape. We had much more contribution to the game but we didn't create enough.

"They scored another cheap goal, he was offside, and that is difficult. Losing 2-0 is a difficult result for us but we have to create an atmosphere like that next week.

"Liverpool deserved it. I haven't seen [the incident with Marouane Fellaini] but I have to say that Fellaini was one of the best players on the pitch."

When Gary Neville gets round to reading about how Manchester United got on at Liverpool tonight he'll have already digested one away defeat - his Valencia side were beaten 1-0 by fellow Spanish side Athletic Bilbao. 

Villarreal (the fourth Spanish team in the competition) beat Germans Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 at home, while Sparta Prague led Lazio but were pegged back to 1-1.
