And in the evening's other two later kick-offs, Villarreal (yep, yet another team from Spain) lead Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 and Sparta Prague have taken an early lead at home to Italian side Lazio.  

Should be two! Brilliant play from Daniel Sturridge down the right of the penalty area, he skins Marcos Rojo and feeds the ball across David de Gea, Philippe Coutinho gets there and he has to score. Coutinho rather treads on the ball and De Gea does brilliantly to shovel it out but he should score. Lift it! Into the roof of the net and it's a goal.

Liverpool having a real go now, super tempo as they snap into tackles and keep the ball in the final third. Gegenpressing, Scouse-style. Adam Lallana is at the heart of it. Manchester United's front three are strangers to the ball at the moment. 

Gary Neville's Valencia are away to fellow Spanish side Athletic Bilbao tonight - it's goalless there, in the two other later kick-offs the deadlock has been broken...

"For the penalty, Memphis Depay lets Nathaniel Clyne get the wrong side of him. The challenge was late and poor.

"Daniel Sturridge's spot-kick had just enough power to take it past David de Gea. That sets this game up perfectly."

Memphis Depay was booked for the foul on Nathaniel Clyne for the spot-kick by the way.

The penalty was about a 5 on the 'soft-o-meter'. See Benteke, C., at Selhurst Park.

There's a bit of penetration as Alberto Moreno shapes a lovely pass in behind the Manchester United backline. it runs to Daniel Sturridge beyond the far post. Can he take it first time? No, he comes back onto his right foot and then Adam Lallana can't get a shot away.

"Liverpool are looking comfortable on the ball - in contrast to Manchester United. When the away side get possession there is no time at all for them to pick a pass out - Jurgen Klopp's side are in their face so quickly." 

Anfield just quietening down a touch, it was electric at kick-off. Still carries a big-game feel though as the hosts probe patiently for a gap. Liverpool yet to get in behind Manchester United and Jurgen Klopp is out of his seat now to bellow some instructions. 

Manchester United now have a spell of play and a welcome chance of a breather. The men in white build down their left but Marcos Rojo's ball in is poor and cleared. All the tempo of Dortmund, none of the quality on display so far.

Edward Taylor: Picking Fellaini (hotheaded ex-Everton player) against Liverpool with a card-happy Spanish ref is a disaster waiting to happen...  

Ash: How many penalties will Fellaini concede if he keeps grabbing like that? On the other hand can Moreno please learn how to defend?

Jordan Henderson is doing his best to be a real influence on this game in the early stages, he was booked after 100 seconds and he's dropping back to almost a third centre-half to gather the ball and start attacks. No chances for the hosts yet though. That early salvo of high-tempo pressing has threatened to wear off.

Denis Irwin, Andy Cole and Gary Pallister are standing with the United fans in the away end. They did well to get a ticket! Must have gone to Midtjylland away. And kept their stubs.

Predictably, Manchester United are having to survive an early Liverpool surge here - roared forward by a deafening noise inside Anfield.

Liverpool's enthusiasm and adrenaline is leading to the concession of too many cheap fouls - which has already brought a yellow card for captain Jordan Henderson.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez takes his spot in the posh seats as Liverpool continue their very bright start. United then break out and Guillermo Varela gets chopped down on the right. The Uruguayan has impressed me recently. 

Jay: A chance for Man United in the first minute? That probably means a 3-0 win for Liverpool lies ahead.

"There's a zest and zip to the Liverpool attack, and they're showing a real willingness to run and close down the Manchester United players. Liverpool look the team more likely to score so far - they're playing with real urgency."

Roberto Firmino into the area, a low cross cleared, Liverpool swarming over Manchester United. But then Marcus Rashford, playing wide right for the visitors, picks the ball up and breaks, eating up 45 yards and buying a foul on halfway. Fine play from the youngster.
