"That is such a big goal. Michael Carrick with a really poor clearance and Roberto Firmino just has a simple tap-in. Very poor defensively. There was nobody near Carrick but he mistimed his clearance, straight to Adam Lallana."

GOAL - Liverpool 2-0 Man Utdpublished at 73 mins

    Roberto Firmino

Michael Carrick. Lovely man, great spokesman, treasured and experienced midfielder. He's had a huge career.

But he's not a centre-back. And he shows it with some woeful defending as Liverpool grab a second.

Jordan Henderson crosses from the right, Carrick should just clear his lines but he tries to volley a tricky pass to a team-mate. He ends up cushioning it to Adam Lallana, and then compounds his error by chasing the ball and being out of position. Lallana finds Roberto Firmino, and he scores.

    Big goal!

"Jordan Henderson tried to open his foot out and guide the ball into the top corner. On target and David de Gea would not have been getting there...

"Liverpool look so good when they don't dominate possession - they are excellent on the counter attack."

What a strike that is! Nathaniel Clyne winds up from a good 25 yards out, wide on the right, and clatters a lovely hit, clean as you like and David de Gea has to punch that one away from danger! The TV cameras pick out Kenny Dalglish and then Sir Alex Ferguson in the stands. Royalty.

Villarreal are now 2-0 up at home to Bayer Leverkusen - is there any chance of Javier Hernandez turning the tie in the Germans' favour though?

Gary Neville's Valencia are still 1-0 down at fellow Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, while Sparta Prague and Lazio are locked in at 1-1 in the Czech Republic.

Daniel Sturridge hasn't seen much of the ball in the second half and he is hooked as Jurgen Klopp reacts to United's change of shape. On comes Joe Allen, with Sturridge predictably and understandably miffed as he takes his seat.

"Signs of Manchester United twitching into life - but they are still relying so heavily on the magnificent goalkeeping of David de Gea.

"Liverpool still look dangerous and for the slight improvement in United, they have yet to create any chance of substance. It's been a miserable night for them so far."

This has been as good as you get on a Thursday night. Compelling viewing, with Act II to come next week back down the East Lancs road.
