A lovely camera shot of Marcus Rashford's mother as he swept England into that early lead. She is moved to the brink of tears. As you'd expect!

It is fewer than 100 days since his professional debut.

Angry Oldiron: No grit in the England midfield. Where's Mark Noble?

Asa Newsome: The decision not to take Antonio to Euro 2016 whilst taking the likes of Sterling and Townsend is Roy's worst decision.

Mike Hall: Roy should consider playing three at the back, even though this might mean three times the chance of a mistake!

  4. Shoddy Englandpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    England 1-0 Australia

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger at the Stadium of Light on BBC Radio 5 live

"Rashford took his goal well, his link-up play has been good. I think England in general, the system is too spaced out and Australia have been the better side despite losing 1-0.

"The midfield don't want the ball off the back four. Bertrand had a decent half, Clyne a terrible one. There is not enough movement in midfield. You have to get on the ball and start passing it.

"There has to be something changed, get people on the ball and start dominating possession."

So far, so good for Northern Ireland. After Lafferty's early goal, the match was rather pedestrian until Washington gladly accepted the gift of a second goal.

Manager Michael O'Neill's priorities are to remain unbeaten and, most importantly, avoid any injuries. He's likely to make some changes in the second half.

Fans have been asked to stay on after the game as the players are to come back out on to the pitch to thank the 14,229 attendees for their support.

There's going to be a party no matter what happens.

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

England ahead after 135 seconds through Marcus Rashford. After that it was Australia on top, though the Three Lions did end the half well.

    Northern Ireland 2-0 Belarus

Stephen Kennedy: About 4 years ago we would have lost to a team like Belarus. Now we're not only winning but winning comfortably. To be fair though, the Belarus players might as well be on their holidays. Only thing missing are their flip flops.

An absolute howler from Belarus goalkeeper Andrey Gorbunov as he comes to punch a cross under no real pressure - he could have caught it - but he just flaps it up into the sky and QPR forward Conor Washington is there to nod into the empty net.

"That would have been a nice moment for Henderson at the Stadium of Light. A well-worked free-kick off the training ground."

  11. GREAT SAVE!published at 41 mins

    England 1-0 Australia

Good question Rob. Did Australia do better than us at the Eurovision?

Here's a chance, Jordan Henderson gets a free-kick played to him on the edge of the area and he hits a decent curling effort which Mat Ryan has to palm over the top.

    England 1-0 Australia

Matthew Williams: Hodgson really has a way of stifling players. Despite early goal, this has been dreadful. Hope tournament is better.

Rob Elmore: Would Australia go further than England if they were in the Euros?

Jeremy Griffiths: My only concern about Rashford is that we don't hype him up too much too early.

England's passing in midfield reduces Chris Waddle to a primal scream off-mic. Not impressed.

Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson aren't doing much to impress. Dele Alli and Eric Dier have to start in France - right?

  14. England still unconvincingpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at The Stadium Of Light

This is very much an experimental England line-up as manager Roy Hodgson sifts through his options ahead of Euro 2016.

It is still a serious test, however, and there are still those worrying signs that England are still too easy to penetrate, even by this average Australia side.

  15. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 36 mins

    England 1-0 Australia

Penalty shout?! Nothing given. Brad Smith - who impresses me with each viewing - hammers in a cross which flicks up onto the hand of Nathaniel Clyne.

    Would have been harsh.

    England 1-0 Australia

Marginally better from England as Jack Wilshere jinks past a man on the edge of the Australia box and almost finds Raheem Sterling with a clever ball through.

    England 1-0 Australia

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger at the Stadium of Light on BBC Radio 5 live

"When England get the ball in the back four, no-one in midfield wants the ball. None of them drop deep to get it and now Forster will have to launch the ball long."

S J McNab:Socceroos, external are incredibly well disciplined in possession. 'Keep the Joey in the pouch' football.

Ziggy Tzardust: Sterling being selected ahead of Michail Antonio is a disgrace. Fast, powerful, in form, scores for fun. Sterling has done nothing this season.

Tom Holmes: If Sturridge is fit (and it looks like he will), then he has to go. He scored in a cup final less than two weeks ago

England will be glad to get in to half-time at 1-0. Australia playing all of the football as Mile Jedinak starts and ends a cracking move, a cross comes in and Chris Smalling has to head over his own crossbar.

England badly missing the Tottenham trio of Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Shane Long was just getting treatment on a nasty cut but he's hobbled back on and turned in from close range. John O'Shea arrived like a steam train running free to nod at goal and Long turns in a rebound.
