England goalkeeper Tom Heaton: "Delighted, I'm very pleased to get on and get a cap. It's been a long hard journey for me.

"Roy has a lot of tough decisions to make, I knew it was a possibility I would get a cap.

"It was incredible. A big, big moment. I felt ready for it, I've been with the team for a year or so now.

"It's a nice challenge. Everyone faces challenges and mine was having to wait but I embrace that. It's a dream come true.

"There is an incredible environment here. Joe Hart was waiting for me when I came off the pitch."

  4. 'I'm delighted for Rashford'published at 22:19 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    England 2-1 Australia

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England manager Roy Hodgson speaking on Radio 5live: "I’m delighted for Marcus Rashford and delighted that he’s received such praise. I’m also delighted that my decision to thust him into the side was not proved to be ridiculous.

"He’s shown that only seconds into the game. An added bonus was that we were able to try a diamond situation. He tired but it was good to see him for 15 minutes out wide and know that he can do a job for us out there if selected.

"This game we knew was going to be a good game and to test us out. And I hoped it would show up any problems we might have.

"Sturridge has a minor injury and we hope it will settle down tomorrow. He’ll be doing extra training on Sunday and he’ll be throwing his hat into the ring and it looks like 25 players will be asking for a seat on the plane and that I’m going to have to disappoint two of them.

"It isn’t just a question of quality of player but it’s also about the balance of the team. There’s a lot of factors to consider and we’ve been doing that non-stop in the build-up and playing two different teams have given me a chance to test some things out."

  5. One cap, one goalpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

Marcus Rashford got himself on the scoresheet for England, and we certainly don't expect him to join the one cap, one goal club.

Players who have only played once but scored include Steven Caulker, Dave Nugent, Franny Jeffers, Danny Wallace and Paul Goddard.

Rashford and Townsend, they go. Sturridge, Henderson, Drinkwater, Barkley...looks dicey. Can Sturridge remain fit? Don't think he can. Tough decision.

    Jasdeep Mudhar

Disappointing performance but at the end of the day it's our second team. Some good performances by some and a good goal by Rashford and a great impact but I don't think he did much else throughout the game. Overall, I wasn't too happy, if we play like that against top teams like Germany, Spain and France we won't win

  7. 'What a debut'published at 22:11 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

England manager Roy Hodgson speaking to ITV Sport: "It's fantastic - I'm pleased for him (Rashford). He tired a bit but that's normal.

"What a debut. You asked if he was capable of dealing with the situation and I think we got a resounding yes."

Has Rashford played himself into the Euro 2016 squad? "Let's wait and see. I've got until Tuesday to name my squad but he wouldn't be out of place in anyone's 23."

What about Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere?

"I don't think it's fitness dependant (with them). We've had two matches and plenty of training matches so wouldn't be using that as an excuse.

"Both have proved, with their performances in training and by getting through one-and-a-half games, they are ready and will be more ready as we move forward."

    On Daniel Sturridge?

"It will be interesting to see how he gets on over the weekend. I hope he trains on Monday and then it won't be a reason for me to leave him out of the 23."

He added: "Once again we used two systems. The system in the second half worked slightly better. He (Rooney) played centre-forward and we wanted to look at Marcus Rashford on the right and I got the answers I wanted."

That training session on Monday suddenly seems a very big one for Daniel Sturridge. Will Roy Hodgson take him if he's not properly fit?

Gerry: Rashford and Rooney lifted this England team really! Credit to Sterling too. But generally, not so bad performance.

James Gurd: if Barkley or Henderson make the squad I'll weep. Just not good enough at this level. Rashford has to go, remember Owen at 18!

Duncan: Midfield is crying out for a composed player to hold the ball and pick a pass. That's Carrick or Noble, not an unfit Henderson.

H Bansal: Based on the performances today, Barkley and Henderson might miss the plane (along with Delph)... Tough choices..

  12. Wins build confidencepublished at 21:58 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    Jimmy Armfield
Ex-England captain for BBC Radio 5 live

"They scrambled home against Turkey and tonight. But there's nothing like a bit of confidence going into a tournament. They won’t play against defences like tonight - Australia were wide open at times particularly for Rooney’s goal. I was concerned about Cahill, Dier was alright but he’ll come up against better player.

"I would take Rashford. He reminds me - in 1966 - we took Alan Ball at 18. And before my time when Pele turned out for Brazil in Sweden. He might just give us the spark. Whether he can play with Kane is another thing but he’s got talent."

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill: "The game couldn't have gone any better for us really. We were able to play about with things a bit. Playing 3-5-2 is an option now.

"I will announce my squad tomorrow. Will Grigg has been very patient, he's sat on a lot of benches for us.

"I have told my players earlier this week who is going. The five lads who aren't coming will be disappointed but they all have a career ahead of them."

Marcus Raaaaashford! What a talent! It was a privilege to be at Old Trafford when he emerged in the Europa League and I look forward to seeing his progress for England. He has to go!

"There’s question marks over Barkley, there’s question marks over Drinkwater – he’s started tonight but he’s not the Danny Drinkwater of Leicester City. There’ll still be four or five worried about a call.

"It’s very hard to predict who is not going. Sturridge is very hard to predict. Roy’s been very loyal to his squad - he might say to Sturridge: ‘if you’ve got a chance of going then I’ll take you’.

  18. 'Rashford has no fear'published at 21:50 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    England 2-1 Australia

England midfielder Jordan Henderson speaking to ITV Sport about Marcus Rashford: "Incredible really. That is the season he's had. He has no fear and wants the ball all the time. It was a great finish.

"He's got everything - good on ball, good movement and good finishing. He needs to continue and he'll be a big player for club and country.

"He made an impact tonight. If given the opportunity [to be in Euro 2016 squad] I'm sure he will do well but it depends on the manager."

He added: "I felt ok. It was a tough 90 minutes. There are things I can do better. It was my first start for a long time and hopefully it will put me in good stead.

"We were disappointed at half-time that we didn't dominate the game like we wanted. Second half, we kept going but one or two things we need to work on."

James Hoste: Wilshere on the sofa, not the plane. Not convinced by Stones or Clyne either. But I suppose they have to go

N Moore: Who misses out? Delph (dropped himself.) Sturridge. And Henderson. No Wilshere. Henderson. Wilshere. Hender.Wilsh. Hendershire.

    England 2-1 Australia

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger at the Stadium of Light on BBC Radio 5 live

"You look at England over the two games and they just don’t seem to be a balanced side. It was all kick it long, no risk and they were too far apart in midfield. No-one took responsibility in midfield. That player in the centre of midfield has got to get on the ball but they ended up too spaced out."
