That chant is in full effect as Will Grigg comes on for Northern Ireland, who have bossed this game. No real chances of note.

Australia have lacked quality in the final third all game but that’s a great ball in. I’ve got to say Dier has to do better than that.

Andros Townsend - Newcastle winger - is jeered by some Sunderland supporters as he comes on for Raheem Sterling. Another man on the fringes.

The Eric Dier centre-back experiment bears fruit, but not perhaps in the manner that England hoped...

Alex Wilkinson bends in a great cross, Dier gets in a muddle and stoops to head through the legs of Fraser Forster. Positional sense...

  5. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 72 mins

    England 2-0 Australia

England might need to see Eric Dier play at centre-back so he gets a run-out there now, replacing Chris Smalling. Who appeared to be holding a hamstring.

England are not blessed with much cover at the back. Phil Jagielka, charge up your mobile...

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger at the Stadium of Light on BBC Radio 5 live

"I think Roy’s given Sterling a good chance to try to get him to reproduce some form from the season before last. I don’t think he’s played badly but I don’t think he’s been great either."

  7. GREAT SAVE!published at 71 mins

    England 2-0 Australia

Melbourne City midfielder Aaron Mooy, who has probably been the best player on the pitch all game, feeds a cracking pass through into the run of Robbie Kruse, but he can only rattle the shins of Fraser Forster.

Forster absolutely fills the goal doesn't he? Massive.

Ireland look good in Dublin and both Jonathan Walters and Shane Duffy have gone close with headers in the second period.

Martin O'Neill has started to ring the changes as James McClean, Darron Gibson & Jeff Hendrick come on for Shane Long, Glenn Whelan & Stephen Quinn.

It's time to shine if you want a place in the squad for Sweden in Paris on 13 June gents.

    Netherlands shoddy all over.

England have undoubtedly looked a better side with Wayne Rooney on the pitch. And it's not often I've said that in the last year or so. Ross Barkley gives the ball away, his place in the squad could be touch-and-go.

Australia sub Chris Ikonomidis heads wide after another flowing move from the men in gold.

If you give a young striker a start and he scores inside three minutes and then plays generally pretty well, you have to take him don't you?Wayne Rooney pulls Australia around and the move ends with Nathaniel Clyne firing over.

  17. Unselfish Sterling assists Rooneypublished at 21:05 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at The Stadium Of Light

It has been a mixed night for Raheem Sterling but he has shown an unselfish streak to his game that almost brought a second goal for Marcus Rashford in the first half and his pass was the perfect invitation for Wayne Rooney to double England's lead.

Sterling is in the process of rebuilding his confidence after a mixed first season at Manchester City following his £49m move from Liverpool last summer - and that can only help.

"Rashford's first touch lets him down. He fizzes one across goal and no-one can get a touch. England have upped the tempo and have a better shape to them."

  20. CLOSE!published at 61 mins

    England 2-0 Australia

Well that is more like it, lovely slick play from England sees Raheem Sterling find Wayne Rooney through the heart of the field, he looks up and slides in Marcus Rashford, a slightly tame first touch and then his shot/cross glides just beyond Rooney and the far post...
