Gareth Whalley: Rooney scores yet another goal against a team ranked 50 and above. That was a good finish though.

Chris Mitchell: Gobsmacked people still question Rooney playing for England. Oozes quality. Anyone with 52 international goals deserves respect.

Alex Lonsdale: Pretty good finish for a player who apparently can't cut it up front anymore.

So Marcus Rashford is 51 goals behind Wayne Rooney now. Time is on his side...

Where do Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane fit in together then?

"A class finish by Rooney. Australia leaving themselves short at the back.

"A good counter, good pace by Sterling and Rooney just lashes it into the roof of the net from 20 yards."

    Wayne Rooney

Well that is a hell of a finish! Wayne Rooney hammers his 52nd goal for England home from 20 yards after a lightning counter-attack.

Raheem Sterling streaks away from his marker, there is one defender back against two and Sterling slides it across to Rooney. He's all one, one touch to settle and then a brilliant hit from the edge of the area right into the roof of the net.

    England 1-0 Australia

Paul Thompson: Good decision from Roy to bring on James Milner. Will bring experience, control and urgency to the midfield which is needed.

Hugh in France: Forster, Clyne & Bertrand should start. Much better defenders than Hart, Walker & Rose.

Paul Lummis: Wilshere and Lallana off suggests Roy has already made decision. Sterling, Henderson and Drinkwater very underwhelming so far.

Australia really commit men forwards with every attack, they almost overwhelm England down the right but then one clearance has Wayne Rooney through on goal. One good touch and he's in but he can't quite get it out of his feet and he's tackled. Could be an exciting last 40 minutes or so.

Better build-up play from England, moving the ball quicker and slicker. Raheem Sterling beats his man with ease but his cross is poor.

Seems a rather strange tactical switch to me. We all know what Wayne Rooney does or doesn't do up front.

Can England step it up a gear in this second half?

So then, it looks like Wayne Rooney is playing right up front with Marcus Rashford just behind him. Hmmmm.

I was expecting Roy to try Rooney in midfield.

Football witness: Serious mistake omitting Walcott, Carroll, from Euro squad, defending corners Carroll in fact could be a centre half.

Scott: As soon as England play a decent team, they'll be beaten and exposed.

Josh Roberts: Great half for Stones, looks solid. Rashford not been central enough since he scored IMO. Following ball to wings.

A job well done so far for Republic of Ireland.

They look organised and have dealt with Netherlands comfortably. The away side have seen 61% of possession but done little with it.

Shane Long's close-range finish the difference. He looks like a key man for Martin O'Neill along with Robbie Keane if the Republic are to hurt sides in France.

Harry Arter is trying his best to force a place on the plane and has charged around in that first half, picking up a yellow in the process.

Danny from Winchester: People praising Lallana for his work rate coming straight from Klopp and Gegenpressing. Even when the English are good it's because of the Germans!

Luke from Yorkshire: If Sterling goes to the Euros I'll stop watching football. Forever.

Jamie from London: I think Sturridge's heart broke when the ball hit the net.
