    This makes us feel old.

BBC Sport is counting down 25 classic moments from the European Championship in the build-up to Euro 2016.

Today we remember Stuart Pearce's ecstatic celebration after scoring for England in their penalty shootout against Spain, and Gareth Southgate's heartbreaking miss against Germany which ended England's run in Euro 96.

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger at Wembley on BBC Radio 5 live

"It's an unbelievable story. If he does go to the Euros he will wake up one day and think 'what has happened to me this year?'

"He's a talent, you can see that. He has all the attributes you need to be a centre forward."

  3. Rashford bunking off?published at 19:19 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    England v Australia (19:45 BST)

    John Murray
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

"Rashford started this season only 17 years old and turned 18 in October. Luke Shaw wrote profiles in the cup final programme and said 'don't forget he's doing his exams at the same time as this'.

"Now, with 18 appearances for Manchester United - he started 18 of their last 19 matches of the season - he's in the 26 and here he is in the last match before Roy Hodgson names the 23."

    England v Australia (19:45 BST)

England last faced Australia in 2003, with the men from Down Under pulling off a shock 3-1 win at Upton Park.

Wayne Rooney was one of six debutants that night. He was joined by James Beattie, Paul Konchesky, Paul Robinson, Jermaine Jenas and Franny Jeffers.

Jeffers scored but never played for England again. Cruel.

Another player to make their debut at a younger age than Marcus Rashford may surprise you - Aston Villa 'defender' Micah Richards was 18 years and 144 days old when he played for England against the Netherlands in 2006.

Richards has won just 13 caps though, with one goal. He last played for England in 2012 - also against the Dutch.

Another of the current squad, Raheem Sterling, is England's fifth-youngest player after he made his debut in November 2012 at the age of 17 years and 342 days.

Will Sterling make Roy's final 23? It looks likely.

  8. Where's Defoe?published at 19:09 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    England v Australia (19:45 BST)

Some Sunderland fans at the stadium tonight may wonder if their own finisher, Jermain Defoe, shouldn't have had a chance to make the Euros squad.

Here's what Roy Hodgson had to say: “Defoe went to Canada [to MLS Toronto, before joining Sunderland].

“I’m not saying for a minute he doesn’t have the ability but we have other eggs in the basket and we don’t want to break any of those eggs. We’re really looking for players who are more akin to Vardy, Rooney, Sturridge, rather than a player who has made his name as a fox in the box finisher.”

Republic of Ireland v Netherlands (19:45 BST)

Shay Given could become Ireland's longest-serving player tonight or against Belarus on Tuesday.

The 40-year-old will beat John Giles' record of 19 years and 202 days, if he wins his 134th cap in the series of upcoming games.

Current captain Wayne Rooney is a man who can give Marcus Rashford some advice.

Rooney is the second-youngest England international and their youngest ever goalscorer. He was 17 years and 111 days old when he played against tonight's opponents Australia in February 2003.

He had scored just five career goals at that point. He now has 51 for England alone...

  13. Hodgson looking for signspublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

    England v Australia (19:45 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at The Stadium Of Light

England manager Roy Hodgson does not only have concerns about the fitness of injured striker Daniel Sturridge - he will be closely monitoring Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson.

Hodgson seems committed to selecting Wlishere if he proves he is simply capable of standing up and walking around but the Arsenal midfield man has barely played this season.

And Henderson is so short of action after a knee injury that he was only named as an unused substitute for Liverpool's Europa League Final defeat to Sevilla in Basel.

England have gambled on the fitness of key players before at major tournaments - and it has never ended well.

Chris Flood: Yeah, Theo Walcott has been a let down but only because the fans & press piled too much pressure on him way too soon.

Isn't it always the way Chris? Marcus next?

  15. Martin's worked it out...published at 19:00 British Summer Time 27 May 2016

Republic of Ireland v Netherlands (19:45 BST)

Martin O'Neill is a fella with it all seemingly worked out.

His Republic of Ireland side take on Netherlands tonight and Belarus on Tuesday, but the 64-year-old expects to have told most of his squad members if they are going to Euro 2016 by the end of the weekend.

There are some questions to answer and items to ponder.

Will Darron Gibson get a berth despite only appearing 11 times for Everton this season?

Aiden McGeady - not needed by his loan side Sheffield Wednesday for their Championship play-off final on Saturday - is expected to be on the plane.

And who starts in goal? Shay Given or Darren Randolph?

Will we see Walcott play in a tournament again?

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott is England's youngest ever international.

Walcott was aged 17 years and 75 days when he played against Hungary prior to the 2006 World Cup.

A decade on and he has been left out by Roy Hodgson. Is it fair to say that he has been a let down?

He has scored eight goals for England and has only won the FA Cup...
