    Albania 0-1 Switzerland

A foul on Ansi Agolli draws another free-kick for Albania and he stands over it out on the touchline. It's a good knock and headed away for a corner which gets confidently met in the six-yard box to be nodded well clear.

    Albania 0-1 Switzerland

The opening 18 minutes have been fairly even in terms of territory but no doubting which side look more threatening.

The Swiss have looked like they can pierce the opposing defence comfortably while Albania's best hope from this early showing seem to be set pieces.

  4. Is Shaqiri looking to leave Stoke?published at 14:19 British Summer Time 11 June 2016

    Albania 0-1 Switzerland

Swiss media are looking to their star player Xherdan Shaqiri to deliver for the team this evening. "Without Shaqiri in top form, Switzerland has a problem," Tages-Anzeiger, external says.

The paper goes on to say the midfielder will be looking to turn heads in the tournament because he is keen to engineer a move away from Stoke City and emulate his compatriots Granit Xhaka, who has signed with Arsenal, and Breel Embolo, who looks to be on his way to Manchester United.

There's surprisingly little in the Albanian press about their opening game. However, the Shekulli, external newspaper carries an article on the "insane" price of beer in the Stade de France. #Priorities

Xherdan Shaqiri has had a hand in nine goals in his last eight competitive games for Switzerland (4 goals, 5 assists).

Lovely stuff from Blerim Dzemaili as he attacks the Albania defence and slides a perfect pass into the path of Haris Seferovic.

The Eintracht Frankfurt striker is well placed, 18 yards out, but the shot is tame and easily held. That was a real opening and he approached it like a man short on confidence.

Seferovic scored three goals in qualifying and could fill his boots here as Albania look there to be attacked. Their back line is folding when questioned so far.

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 14 mins

    Albania 0-1 Switzerland

Fabian Schar is on the scoresheet and in the book now for a foul near the corner flag. A chance for Albania to swing a cross in, it'll be Taulant Xhaka... straight into the hands of Yann Sommer.

"Albania keeper Etrit Berisha has let his team-mates down there a little bit. He's come and is committed but has missed the ball. He was flapping at wind.

"If he stays on his line he would save that quite comfortably. He's caught in no man's land and that is no place for a keeper to be."

    Albania 0-1 Switzerland

This is just the second time in their history that Switzerland have taken the lead in a European Championship game.

Johan Djourou clearly isn't a fan of being ahead as he stumbled on the ball in the back line to give Armando Sadiku the chance to pinch it. He does, briefly but is easily caught.

Credit to Albania for a spirited response to their early setback. I'm keen to see how they defend another attack because it looked a little tentative at the back early on...

Ansi Agolli is lining up a free-kick for Albania some 35 yards out but he decides to chip over the wall and look for a runner, it's smashed clear.

What do Albania do now? They had just 28 shots on target in all of qualifying so they are hardly a side built to chase a game.

"What an atmosphere. I think you can see red everywhere. Emotions are going to be high because there are so may links between the countries and bloodline, with the Xhaka brothers playing against each other."

Poor goalkeeping from Etrit Berisha. It was an excellent corner from Xherdan Shaqiri but the goalkeeper was nowhere near it. It's been a nervy start from Albania.

Albania 0-1 Switzerland - Fabian Schar

Switzerland are off and running at Euro 2016 and it's defender Fabian Schar who cannot believe his luck as he nods Xherdan Shaqiri's corner into an empty net.

The Albanian goalkeeper is found wanting and gets nothing on the delivery. It's poor goalkeeping and the ball just bounces over the line - Schar races away and looks absolutely thrilled with himself.

    That was gift wrapped.

A reminder of the teams if you ate just joining us as Switzerland left-back Ricardo Rodríguez breaks forward and sees a cross blocked. Again it's good work by the side in white.

Some patient but excellent work by the Swiss and Xherdan Shaqiri slips a team-mate in behind the defence but the cross is deflected for a corner. That's encouraging for Vladimir Petkovic's side though as they cut through their opponents easily.

A few early touches for the Switzerland back line and zero pressure is applied to them, it's a case of sitting in for Albania already.

Switzerland will hope that coming up against Euro debutants Albania will boost their chances of earning only a second win in their European Championship history. They have previously only won one game in nine attempts at Euro 96, Euro 2004 and Euro 2008.

The two teams' most recent meetings were in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup with the Swiss winning both games and Xherdan Shaqiri scoring in each match.

Albania won their last qualifying game 3-0 in Armenia to achieve the unthinkable and escape their group behind Portugal.

Don't be fooled by that scoreline, these guys like to make things ugly. I'm talking one centre forward who is often isolated and they'll get men behind the ball and watch you work up a frustration before finding some way, anyway, to land a sucker punch.

They won in Portugal in qualifying (you won't be shocked to hear it was 1-0), so will euro 2016 see the shackles come off? Of course not, get the body armour on and embrace what will be a battle.

If Albania's place at Euro 2016 is not story enough, their turbulent meeting with Serbia in qualifying should at least make us all sit up and take notice.

The sides' met in October 2014 and saw the game abandoned when a drone carrying a political message flew into the stadium and sparked clashes between players and fans.

Cue shock from across the football world that historic political tensions between the countries could spill over in such a way.

The Eagles were awarded a 3-0 win, a victory which proved key in them making it to France. Serbia won their return meeting 2-0 in Albania.

Granit Xhaka is a good footballer, he has a hell of a left foot and likes a tackle and gets stuck in. Arsenal don't have many of those. Their fans will enjoy watching him.

Albania will play nice and tight, and narrow, but the Switzerland team will have more of the ball.
