It was a poor showing in Euro 2012. The standard of play was poor and Ireland never got going. We are all looking for a bright performance this time.

  3. 'No one-man show'published at 16:59 British Summer Time 13 June 2016

    Martin O'Neill
Republic of Ireland manager on BBC One

It was looking touch and go a few days ago but Jonathan Walters has come through for us.

The Swedish side collectively have been big players. You know what they are about. They qualify for competitions. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the talisman but it is not a one-man show.

Absolutely buzzing inside the stadium. A quick reminder of the teams before we kick off. May the best team win.

Steven MacConmara: Ibrahimovic is a great player, but Ireland must not get too tight, and target Lustig. Brady could take him to the cleaners

Colm: Passion fight spirit teamwork all missing last time out not this time

Tom McNamee: Bring on Zlatan, we're in it for the Long game.

The teams are out, Zlatan and John O'Shea lead them into the cavern of Stade de France. It looks packed and noisy. Anthems to come.

Shane Long offers a threat. Martin [O'Neill] didn't really trust him before. He hasn't been prolific in his career but he has had a good season. Martin now trusts him and he offers a threat with his pace. He seems to be getting more mature and he is in form and confident. That is what they will need today.

  9. And the rest?published at 16:54 British Summer Time 13 June 2016

Republic of Ireland v Sweden (17:00 BST)

So who else should the Republic of Ireland be looking out for? Well, Premier League fans will know about right-winger Sebastian Larsson, who has been used sparingly this season at Sunderland. On the other wing, look out for Emil Forsberg, who plys his trade in Germany with Leipzig.

Cloudy with the odd spot of rain around the Stade de France for a fixture that is awash with colour. Put it this way, there is no mistaking Sweden fans scattered in the area dominated by the Irish green.

Apparently fans of both sides indulged in some serious Abba singing on the metro ride from the centre of the city.

Talk of a booze ban near stadiums on match day did not apply to today's fixture and fans were enjoying themselves in the build-up to kick-off. Once inside the stadium, the only alcohol available is a modest 0.5%.

Republic of Ireland v Sweden (17:00 BST)

    Chris Waddle
Former England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

I think it is key that Glenn Whelan and James McCarthy look over their shoulder and see where Zlatan Ibrahimovic is, cut out his line of delivery and make them play high balls because John O'Shea can handle that.

  12. Marking your cardpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 13 June 2016

Republic of Ireland v Sweden (17:00 BST)

A quick reminder that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored 50 goals for Paris St-Germain this season, and needs three more goals in this tournament to equal Michel Platini's record of nine in European Championships.

Kevin Kilbane reckons it will be Glenn Whelan's job to pick him up. Good luck with that one.

So what do we reckon then Republic of Ireland fans? Mark Lawrenson reckons this is an "adventurous team". With Italy and Belgium lying in wait do they need to get something from the game today?

Ireland are ranked above Sweden, and Zlatan hasn't scored in the past three games against them, so will collectively spirit defeat a team relying on its talismanic leader?

Sweden fans needn't worry about Zlatan wearing himself out during his team's warm-up.

The 34-year-old looked pretty sanguine as he eased his way through a little piggy in the middle action, popped his hands on his hips for a while and then generally had a good look around the place. When he popped one in from 20 yards the Sweden fans let off a huge cheer.

In contrast, the Irish lads were positively haring all over the place, getting a decent sweat on.

As expected, injury doubt Jon Walters is fit after recovering from an Achilles injury. James McCarthy also starts after his calf problem and takes his place alongside Glenn Whelan and the attack minded Jeff Hendrick in midfield.

Wes Hoolahan plays behind Walters and Shane Long in a 4-3-1-2 formation.

Sweden line up as expected, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Berg at the top of their 4-4-2 formation.

Watch out for 21-year-old central defender Victor Lindelof, who impressed this season for Portuguese side Benfica. He is also one of six in the squad who won the Under-21 European Championship last summer.

Our Kev has a point. Will Republic boss Martin O'Neill opt to nullify Zlatan or just worry about his side's own attacking threat?

Let's get the teams from our man in the stadium, Paul Fletcher, who is far more cheery than his profile picture suggests.

We know if we stop Zlatan then we have got a chance. Take him out of it and we are as good, if not better than Sweden.

With him in the side he is the X-factor, that spark. He has got the ego and charisma and he will want to perform.

I really fancy us to get something from this game today.

First up for the Republic is Sweden, or should we say Zlatan et al? I'm not one to go along with this one-man team malarkey, Ibrahimovic doesn't do much defending, after all.

But the 34-year-old scored 11 times in Euro 2016 qualifying, including three in their play-off victory over Denmark, and he knows France quite well after his previous five years at Paris St-Germain.

"The legend can still deliver," he said modestly before the game. Comme d'habitude.
