As Ronaldo crept away from that missed spot-kick there was an eerie quiet around the ground. Microphones picking up shock on its own in the middle of the night.

    Is this just fate?

I called it. I wasn't brave enough to say it out loud but I didn't fancy him. I really didn't. He was talking to the referee before taking the penalty. It is not easy, I missed so many, but I didn't fancy him.

    Can you believe this?!

Cristiano Ronaldo denied by the post. The keeper went the other way.

    What dimension are we in?

  5. PENALTY - TO PORTUGALpublished at 77 mins

    Portugal 0-0 Austria

Keep-ball. They need to but can't quite do it. There are midfielders out there for Austria who haven't passed the ball to each other for about 20 minutes and it shows as Portugal look to capitalise on a few mis-hit passes.

Hang on a minute. Guerreiro plays a low ball into the Austria box and Martin Hinteregger rugby tackles Cristiano Ronaldo to the floor. Penalty to Portugal - no doubt about it - and a yellow card for the centre-back.

Just 15 minutes left for the side that's dominated this game (Portugal, in case you were in any doubt) to find a winner.

The Austria fans are in good voice. They can sense maybe the worst is behind them. But is something bad still to come?

Ah no, this is a real waste. Arnautovic was primed but instead they've gone the way of a training ground comedy of errors. Austria were trying to be clever but Sabitzer's little attempted flick over the wall and into space is not a good idea, it turns out.

Teethy in midfield, Austria. Julian Baumgartlinger knocks it on to Schopf. Just go forward, run with it, seems to be the plan.

Baumgartlinger's then brought down. Free-kick in what could be Marko Arnautovic territory.

  9. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 71 mins

    Portugal 0-0 Austria

A change for Portugal. Ricardo Quaresma is replaced by Joao Mario. By my reading, that's a winger off for a more central man. Still pretty attacking though...

Austria happy with this? Portugal far from it.

Right-back Vieirinha's joining the man on the opposite flank Raphael Guerreiro in playing pretty much as a winger when Portugal move forward.

But just for now there's a bit of relief for the Austrians. A few passes strung together like this has been a real rarity since the break.

The performance of Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer has just been described by the gentleman to my right as "absolutely incredible".

The Austria Vienna keeper stands between Ronaldo and the scriptwriter's dream ending at the moment.

Get the distinct impression the Austria fans would take full-time - and a precious point - right now.

So Portugal still can't get past the Austrian rear-guard - take another look at how Robert Almer kept out Cristiano Ronaldo's header.

That was the 36th direct free-kick Ronaldo's taken without scoring at a major tournament.

    His is a furrowed brow.

Closer, but still no cigar for the non-smoking, presumably teetotal, Cristiano Ronaldo.

His latest effort a fizzing free-kick that sails over.

  15. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 65 mins

    Portugal 0-0 Austria

Julian Baumgartlinger is penalised for a challenge on Joao Moutinho, he's the kind of player whose ankles and toes are constantly on the end of a late challenge.

A big change for Austria. David Alaba is coming off. Alessandro Schopf replaces him.

Another chance to watch that shot from Cristiano Ronaldo.

But again the ball's a little short on quality. Portugal work it back into the box and win their 10th corner of the match, and that's nodded clear by Christian Fuchs - again they fail to beat the first man.

Ricardo Quaresma beats Christian Fuchs down the right and is just caught by the Leicester man's trailing leg. A free-kick in a very handy spot indeed...

I think Austria need to make a change. David Alaba is struggling. I think one of the holding players need to be taken off and an attacking player brought on.

You feel it's coming. Guerreiro with a little dink nodded out by an increasingly panicked Austria defence. The Portugal red is swirling around in front of them, first to the ball every time whenever it's momentarily cleared.

Can they hold this tide back?
