"They didn’t look so superb the first game but they need time to mesh so they’ll be fine.

"I can see the team is happy, everybody is trying to play good. When everybody comes together it should be great."

Historically you might have said he's not the right fit but Manchester United need that quick fix. 

He's the sort of manager who can make a big impact. 

We are all talking about Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic and hopefully those two will light up the Premier League.

Southampton boss Claude Puel, after his first competitive game in charge, told BBC Sport: "At half-time, I told the players 'just don’t be afraid'. In the second half it was important to make good intentions and play good football.

"If you play good football, you don’t problems. This was true in the second half.

"In the second half you can see the future."  

On playing winger Nathan Redmond as a striker: "It’s interesting for him and the team. I said that he can play a good season as a striker. It was good for his confidence to score today."

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka: "We played an amazing game. Three months ago we were in the Championship and played today against a team that has finished ninth in the Premier League in the last three seasons.

"For us it was difficult test, a good test, with all the pressure of the first game in the Premier League but I'm really pleased. 

"Alvaro Negredo and Gaston Ramirez are the reflection of the team. It's easier to play the way they have played, as individuals, when you know how important the team is for everyone."

Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri, after his first competitive game in charge: “I am very happy with how we did. I look at the performance more than the point.

“When we had 10 men we were not able to play our game but the team showed great character.

“I think in the first half we could have got a bit more. When our energy was good we played a great game but we couldn’t quite finish the game off.

“The players have done well with the formation and I think we were unlucky with the red card because we were playing well at that moment."

Southampton winger Nathan Redmond scored on his debut today.

"We wanted to get off to a good start," he said. "We were sloppy in the first half but luckily picked it up in the second. We’ve got to start better in the next game.

"The manager told us at half-time to take pride in what we were doing. We showed great spirit to come back.

"To get my first goal is good but I’d have preferred the three points."

Crystal Palace's ongoing search for a new striker has been "very frustrating", says boss Alan Pardew.

The Eagles have been heavily linked with Liverpool striker Christian Benteke.

"We know we need strikers to come into the club and we're working hard on that. We can't get one over the line," he tells BBC Sport.

"Steve Parish (Palace chairman) and myself are still pushing the door and hopefully the door will open. 

"We've got to have a cutting edge and score some goals. We're very much aware of that and we'll address it."

Stoke boss Mark Hughes says goalkeeper Jack Butland will be out for a "couple of weeks rather than anything more sinister". 

About 40-year-old deputy Shay Given: "We’ve got a very good keeper. What Shay gives you is good information to the people in front of him. He demands his defenders to stay on their toes."

"I thought we acquitted ourselves well and tried to create things. We finished strongly so that’s encouraging. On another day with a little more care we could have scored more goals.

"Overall we restricted them as a home side. We calmed the crowd and didn't allow Middlesbrough to built any momentum. Quite clearly Joe Allen is outstanding and he’ll be a mainstay of this side for a long time. He can build his career here now."

West Brom manager Tony Pulis is "hoping and praying" the Premier League club can keep Saido Berahino beyond the summer transfer window.

England Under-21 striker Berahino was a target for Tottenham in the past two windows, and has been linked with another move away this summer.

"He won't leave unless we bring someone in, that has always been the case," Pulis said after the opening-day 1-0 win at Crystal Palace. "There has to be someone of that quality coming through the door.

"It is more important that we stay in the Premier League and Saido's goals will help us do that. We're hoping and praying we can keep him."

West Brom's opening-day win at Crystal Palace was "not a fluke", says manager Tony Pulis.

"I think we deserved it," the Welshman told BBC Sport. "Palace never created a lot, they had just long range shots really. I'm very pleased."

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew: "We lacked a cutting edge, a moment, today. If we had scored first, we would've won.

"I thought we were pretty strong defensively, they didn't have many chances.

"West Brom are never easy, they camp the midfield, make it hard at the back and of course - set plays." 

Crystal Palace winger Yannick Bolasie is "close" to moving to Everton, says Eagles boss Alan Pardew.

Bolasie started on the bench against West Brom, coming on in the second half to a standing ovation from the home fans.

"It will be disappointing if he is going to move," Pardew told BBC Sport. "The deal is close but he will go with our best wishes. 

"I think it is fair to say his heart and soul is elsewhere. Yannick is all about heart and soul and if it is not with us then we have to say goodbye. 

"But by the same token the deal is not done yet so we will wait and see."
