The only thing I think Liverpool are lacking is width, especially on the left. James Milner at left-back tends to cut inside.

It may well be the theme of this early part of the season, goalkeeping distribution. Simon Mignolet of Liverpool gets Jurgen Klopp into a lather by taking a poor touch and then slicing the ball clean out of play.

    Klopp fuming at that.

Ten minutes gone and Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is agitated and has already been warned by fourth official Bobby Madley for encroaching outside his own technical area.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, in contrast, has not left his seat.

A lot of holding, barging and blocking in the penalty area as Liverpool have a corner. Daniel Sturridge tries to flick the ball on and it ends up at the feet of Jordan Henderson, who spanks a shot high and wide.

Confident start from Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp's men not content to sit back and hit Chelsea on the break. Plenty of possession for the men in red.

    Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

The pressing and closing down is superb from both sides. It's leading to a fast-paced midfield battle with no real chances to speak of yet - apart from Daniel Sturridge's shot which Thibaut Courtois made a hash of.

We spoke about how these teams would cope defensively and initially Liverpool's shape looked very strong - the back four are communicating well and there are not many gaps. It will be difficult for Chelsea to break them down tonight.

Wednesday morning roast dinner? Let's make that a thing. Lovely.

Chelsea's game against Swansea was a very intense watch and this one has started at full throttle too. Antonio Conte's team are not going to be boring to watch I think.

Friday night football is not a good idea. Like having a roast on a Wednesday morning.

Best spell so far from Chelsea ends with Cesar Azpilicueta crossing over the head of Diego Costa and auxillary left-back James Milner ends up slicing his clearance wildly away. That could have gone anywhere.

Jermaine Jenas is a big fan of Liverpool's start to the season and they have started this game very smartly.

They pop the ball about and find James Milner on the overlap but he is whistled for a foul as he crosses in.

I think we are already seeing what this game is going to be about. Chelsea attacking and then Liverpool counter-attacking. Courtois got lucky there from Sturridge's shot.

  13. CLOSE!published at 2 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool

Frantic start! Willian leads a charge up the pitch which comes to nothing and within seconds Liverpool come close.

Daniel Sturridge cuts in on to his left foot, shoots from the edge of the box and Thibaut Courtois lets the ball slide through his grasp! He recovers to stop it on the line but it's almost a Massimo Taibi moment...

Liverpool make a very smart start, all of their attacking players involved as Nathaniel Clyne crosses, Georginio Wijnaldum has a shot and it's deflected straight into the arms of Thibaut Courtois.

I see both these teams finishing in the top four. They're not in Europe and Liverpool, for me, are looking something special.

The lights go off at Stamford Bridge as we get a proper laser show, lights, smoke bombs. It's a cross between a Coldplay gig and the Royal Rumble.

The match is already in danger of being overshadowed.

We asked for your memories of players/managers returning for a second spell...

Billy Kirkwood returning to Dundee United, great player poor manager. Paul Sturrock returning to Dundee United as manager = disaster. Paul Hegarty returning as manager = disaster. Craig Brewster returning as manager = disaster. Mixu Paatelainen returning as manager = relegation. Surely lesson learnt but no, Ray McKinnon returns as manager in 2016. Jury still out.
