David Luiz's return to Chelsea was one of the more surprising stories of transfer deadline day - but the home fans seem happy enough as he is given a very warm welcome as he is introduced at Stamford Bridge.

It was regarded as excellent business when Chelsea got £50m from Paris St- Germain for him two years ago. Time will tell if it is good business to buy him back for £32m.

A lot is always said of David Luiz but, from manger's point of view, you want your centre-back to be strong, mobile, good on the ball and a goal threat, which he is.

Yes, every now and again he can make a mistake but one game stands out for me when it comes to Luiz and that is the Champions League final in 2012 and he came to the fore then.

  4. Firmino has 'little issue' - Klopppublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, talking to Sky Sports, on Roberto Firmino's absence with a minor groin strain: "There's really not a lot wrong with him but no-one could give me a guarantee that if he tried today it wouldn't get worse. It is a little issue with the muscle. I had to make a decision and I'm taking no risks at this early stage of the season.

"Chelsea are physically really strong and we expect that from Chelsea. We know about their quality but I know we can do it with a bit of creativity and flexibility. We need to play brave football.

"They defend well but no-one defends perfectly. We have to find space, move them around and then defend like hell."

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, talking to Sky Sports: "John Terry and David Luiz have different characteristics but both are centre-backs and we have worked in the week with David. Tonight there is the chance for him to play and I'm sure David will have a good performance.

"Coutinho playing instead of Firmino is not a great surprise for us. The three Liverpool strikers play with a lot of movement during the game so that doesn't change our style.

"When Liverpool attack they attack with six and seven players and are very dangerous. We must pay attention to this situation but we have worked hard on this this week. We are ready."

Sadio Mane is the signing of the season so far for me, he has been brilliant. It shows why it is important to buy within the league.

He knows what it is about. You've got a player ready to go and that's what Liverpool have done by signing him for Southampton.

Yes, I know that it's just MLS, not the MLS. But the MLS is now common usage and just MLS on its own sounds weird.

After last season it seemed all doom and gloom at Chelsea.

You had Eden Hazard looking un-Hazard like and the players looked without energy but now they look like they have a direction. It's not easy for a manager to do that.

  15. Firmino absence a real blow for Liverpoolpublished at 19:18 British Summer Time 16 September 2016

    Chelsea v Liverpool (20:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Stamford Bridge

Jurgen Klopp has had real joy against the so-called better sides in the Premier League - with wins away to Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal since he arrived at Liverpool.

The flexibility, ability, work-rate and goalscoring ability of Brazilian Roberto Firmino has been central to his plans, often playing without a recognised striker.

Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge will have to shoulder a greater burden, which emphasises how important Firmino, who scored twice in last Saturday's 4-1 win against Premier League champions Leicester City, has become.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Chelsea's Diego Costa: "He is a real warrior on the pitch. He uses his body all the time and that is a quality. He was nearly unstoppable against Swansea.

"He is world class and that's the best thing football fans can say about you.

"Last season was not a Chelsea season and now they are back on track, so we need to be ready for a real challenge."

Roberto Firmino is a huge miss for Liverpool. He enjoys playing down the middle. He works so hard and almost sets the tone. Is Sturridge going to provide that? Is Coutinho going to provide that? I'm not so sure.

When Sturridge is fit, for me, he plays. He is one of the best strikers in Liverpool's ranks.

Goonerama: Martin Keown left Arsenal a callow youth of 20, returned 7 years later, became indispensible, cheeky 3 league titles, 3 FA cups

Andy McNamara: Howard Kendall returned to Everton as a player manager. That turned out pretty well.

Johnny Magrinho: Stefan Effenberg. Monchengladbach, Bayern, Fiorentina, Monchengladbach then back to Bayern. Did he even mean to go to Italy?!
